The graduated cylinder is measured by millimeters, but there is an additional mark that divides each milliliter in half. In other words, between 5 and 10 milliliters, there would be 4 markings. Is the uncertainty recorded to the tenths or the hundredths place?

Hi! I am doing my IA lab, and just wanted to ask opinions regarding my lab. Is it acceptable to refer to solutions as: 10% cornstarch solution (for example: 10 grams cornstarch and 100 ml water) or should I convert this to moles (so complicated tho - not chem student)? Second, my quantitative data will mostly be colour absorbance (result from benedicts test). How does one interpret these quantitatively in terms of glucose concentration? Thanks for any help!!

Q: Membrane proteins of mice cells were marked with green and membrane proteins of human were marked with red. The cells were fused together. What would be seen after 2 hours? a) Red and green markers fully mixed b) All red markers and no green markers c) Half of the new cell with green markers and the other half with red d) Red markers on the inside of the membrane and green markers on the outside The answer was a. And I don't understand why. What principle is under this? It should be quite easy, but I still can't fathom it out. Thank you in advance!

So I'm working on the first draft of my ESS IA, which is due tomorrow, and so my panic over the IA has renewed. Basically, I'm growing poppy plants and watering them with zinc nitrate solutions. The ones with lots of zinc nitrate aren't really growing, which I expected, but for some reason my control is hardly growing either. This worries me because a few other people in my class are also growing poppy seeds and their controls have grown rapidly and look great. My control sprouts are short and they keep dying, if they ever grow in the first place. What do you do when your experiment fails like this?

Hello all, I'm trying to complete my design portion for my IA for ESS, where I conducted a survey. But I have gotten stuck on entering my variables and my apparatus, is having an apparatus even applicable for a survey?? I was thinking that my Independent variable would be the questions asked, and my dependent variable would be the results given... I may be wrong. Help please!

Hi! I'm planning on submitting my proposals for my biology IA soon but I'm not sure my ideas will work! I wanted to do something with enzymes, but unfortunately couldn't come up with any good ideas that weren't already done in class. I was thinking about doing the effect of heat on Vitamin C concentration (however, this seems a little too much chem-ish?) or the concentration of Vitamin C on different stages of ripening fruit? I also thought about doing a database lab, but I'm not sure where to get data. I thought about doing the effect of birth control pills on estrogen levels, but again, I'm not sure where to get data, or if it's a good topic at all. Not sure if t…

So, I need to have my HL Bio IA in before the end of this month. And I haven't started it. I know this was stupid to put off for so long, but there's nothing I can do about that NOW, so I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice as to how I can go about finishing this. I had another IA I did for Bio late last year, but the lab design I made was frankly horrible with minimal opportunity for collecting quantitative data. Does anyone know where I can find some ideas to help me brainstorm for what to do? Any helpful words in general? Thank you so much.

Hello, I have to do an assignment related to climate change or energy. It needs to be in an IA format. I need to make a survey questionnaire. I have already had some simple ideas which seem boring to me, such as: -making a survey where I would ask from people how much water, electricity, gas they use.... and then compare the results of people that have a different economical status, age, gender, and living area But these ideas are all the same and kind of repetative So I have formed this discussion in order to try to get out of the box. I am seeking for advice. What could be an interesting topic And how many questions should I aim for?

Hi! So exams are coming up, and I still have not found a good way to revise for biology. I am predicted a 5, but my results vary from mock to mock. For my first mock I got a 7, and for christmas mock I got a 5. I have been doing previous exam questions, and this is probably why my grade varies, as it depends on whether or not I have done the section B question beforehand. So what I am really wondering - what are your effective techniques for revision except prev. exam questions?

My topic is researching the effects of different concentrations of sucrose on germinating soybean seeds. I know that other people in my class are doing germination for the IA too but instead of using sucrose concentrations as the independent variable, they are using different concentrations of SALT. It makes a bit more sense as to why they chose salt since salt is often used to melt the snow but after, it may affect the surrounding environment negatively by decreasing the growth of plants, etc.. So basically my question is, is my IA topic fine in that I chose to use sucrose as an independent variable? or is that random and unjustified? alskdj i guess its not unjustifi…

Hello! So I have my exams in May 2016. We were just recently informed that the new syllabus is going to have question in paper 3 ( that have nothing to do with the option chosen) based on the lab experiments we did. I am scared of this, and I would like to know if there is a past paper on this (recently new) so I have an understanding of how they look like.

Hi, For my HL Biology IA I'm investigating the effect of sound pressure on heart rate. My teacher says that error bars for our graphs should be the standard deviation of our data. I know what standard deviation is and how to calculate it, but I don't think it makes sense to calculate SD in the context of my experiment; it doesn't make sense for there to be an expected heart rate among different participants of various ages, and it doesn't make sense for there to be an expected heart rate that deviates based on lower or higher decibel levels. Should I just use 1 decibel as my error bar length or something? Thanks.

I saw what so called nature of science everywhere on my biology study materials, and they are also in the IB Biology study guide. However, after I quickly look through these 'nature of science', I found they are just some pretty random ideas packaged with some pretty random examples. If nature of science will appear on the exam, does that means I have to remember certain scenarios?

So I'm sleep deprived and my ESS teacher hates my class, which means that I have no idea what to do for an ESS IA. At the moment I just need to figure out a topic/question, but I don't know how to pick one. So, any tips? I'm just so lost and don't even know what topics the IA can be on or anything. I'd really appreciate at least a nudge in the right direction. Especially since I just saw that there have to be multiple experiments (maybe?)

So I'm finishing up my bio IA and I'm done most of it, but there's this one small portion I'm really stuck on.. I used Pearson product-moment correlation for my statistical test and my teacher suggested that I compare my correlation coefficient to a critical value. The problem is that I don't know how to find critical values for Pearson correlation on Excel.. To keep things simple, I'm making p equal to 0.05 because that's what our teachers recommended. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Has anyone bought the 'Biozone student workbook' for HL biology? Looking at the sample pdf, it seems like it has a lot of practice questions plus all the summary on all syllabus point(no nature of science). It seems like that it is even more concise and informative than the famous 'IB biology study guide' by Oxford. However, i only looked at a sample. Did anyone actually bought the book? How do you think about it? Do you recommend it? Thank you.

Hello, I would like to ask what plant is suitable to be used to measure its growth in which it is highly responsive towards its water consumption. Eg: the more water we give the plant, the higher its growth rate. The plant that you state might not be available in my area but just list a few that you know. I tried hydrilla but its hard to manipulate the variables as this is an aquatic plant. The measurement of growth might varies between plants like some uses length of leaves, numbers of leaves, height of plant. So please specify if it is not a burden for you. Please name the plant and scientific name if you know, I appreciate your help. Thank you.

There's been a bit of debate regarding the dependability of antibiotic use, as while they provide less chances of developing resistant strains, are more cost-efficient, and have less side effects, they kill healthy bacteria and can cause fatal side effects in some instances. Do you think antibiotics should be restricted? Are there some situations in which such regulations would be more appropriate than others?

So, New syllabus for sciences..... the skills and applications sections for me are just random. I am not sure about physics or chem, but in Bio they give us random information (sometimes) and random organisms or species or gene name. It strikes me as odd really. Do we really have to memorize them? Too much information !!! Please don't just tell me to look at the syllabus because the syllabus is really ambiguous and vague.... It doesn't tell us exactly what we need to do.. Thank you

Hello I am currently finishing up my IA for Biology HL. I have 5 conditions one of which is control. Each with 5 trials measured over 4 time periods. With 3 dimensions to my research, I was wondering what statistical tests I should use. I was thinking of doing ANOVA and HOC test to check the difference between the conditions with each trial. 4 times ofcourse due to 4 time periods. Is this a good choice? What else should I use. Can I simply use a online calculator for this test, reference it and give the table that shows the results and then explain what the results tell me for the ANOVA and the HOC test? Some details: I tested the antimicrobial properties of turmeric at d…

I am really confused about the idea of uncertainty. So for my raw data I need to include instrumental uncertainties for the columns. For my processed data I can to include standard deviation. But for the process data, I need to also include instrumental uncertainties? How can I combine uncertainties with standard deviation? So say for the final graph, should I use the error bars to represent SD or instrumental uncertainties? Because SD is also uncertainties?? I am really confused..

So good morning everyone, First of all, I would like to introduce myself. I am an IB student doing Biology HL, and, to be honest, despite my good skills in the scientific field, I must admit that the subject is a true challenge. I have learnt a lot from this experience and I still have more to learn, however the aid I have received from the IB survival community has been of great significance in my development. What I have attached in this thread are revision notes for the HL portion of the book that I have created when revising for Biology and a few notes about common pitfalls and useful advice when doing paper 2. They are not fully comprehensive and they don’t have th…

In my intro I seem to be writing rather informal..I don't know if this needs revising: ...detrimental to the reflexes? After all, it would be very difficult to imagine someone listening to a heavy metal band as they are trying to (insert very intricate activity) (the rest of it will be formal for sure; it's just the intro since I'm explaining why I chose those topic, etc)

Hi guys, I'm at the end of my first year and I've pretty much finished my biology IA except when I got to the uncertainties I realised that I had no idea how to go about doing them! Throughout the year I kind of just wrote whatever I thought they were and got partial marks (I realise now, not the best scoring technique) If anyone could give me a step by step breakdown of how to tackle the uncertainties in a biology IA that would really, be so appreciated. Thank you so much!

Hey guys, My Bio IA is testing the effect of different concentrations of copper sulfate and lead nitrate on the rate of photosynthesis in an aquatic plant. I've tried with concentrations of 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%, 0.7%, 0.9%. However, at these concentrations, there was no photosynthesis. My teacher suggested the concentrations are too high for an aquatic plant to survive in. My question is: What concentrations would be appropriate so there's a difference in the rate of photosynthesis, without making photosynthesis inhibitory? Looking forward to your replies, really need help!

My Bio IA is in 2 days and I just want to confirm if my topic is good. I'm doing it on the effect of different concentrations of alcohol on plant growth. Is that good enough or is that too chem like or too simple? I chose it because it was simple, easy to do, and produced good quantitative results.
