Hello, Could someone please tell me if I have to conduct my own experiment when using statistical data analysis ? If so, do you have ideas of any topic where I could do this without having to involve several people in it?

I'm thinking of doing my IA something along the lines of the effects of pesticides on the growth / metabolic processes of algae, I haven't really decided yet. But I'm concerned that this topic already has extensive research, or that it has already been done numerous times before, and I didn't just want to do an IA changing the concentrations of pesticide on algae. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or tips as to how I could make it more original or interesting? Perhaps changing the type or brand of pesticide, something like that? Any help would be appreciated, thanks! This is pretty urgent since I need to start working on it, please help!

Hi! So I just learned how to extract DNA from strawberries in bio (HL) and thought it might be interesting to find a way to use it in another experiment (or possible IA). Does anyone have any suggestions for IA topics or just for any ways to apply DNA extraction for use in something else? (just for fun ) If possible I'd like to stay away from something like "which food gives the most DNA" (booooring). I also found a DIY gel electrophoresis thing but I'd have to buy a lot of potentially expensive supplies... (although I imagine that's probably kinda inevitable for most of these kinds of experiments?) Thank you!

In my biology IA, I am using a statistical test called the one way ANOVA test. However, this test is overwhelmingly complicated that it would take ages for me to do all the calculations and showing them in the form of tables. Being in Y12 now I simply don't have that much time to dedicate hours into writing 8 pages of statistical calculations. So my question is can I use an online calculator? Can I simply reference the website in the report and say "due to the complexity of this test an online calculator was used." ? Will it influence my "personal engagement" criteria? Thank you very much!

Hello fellow IB survivors! I just finished my first year of IB, and I want to start with my biology IA. I want to do a genetics based one, and was wondering if I could investigate MBTI Test (16 personalities) results of both sides of my parents' family, and evaluate if there is a personality traits pattern. My research question would be: "to what extent are personality traits inherited?" (or somewhere along that line) I will also discuss how personality is created both genetically and environmentally (nature vs nurture), I think this would be quite interesting. Do you think this is a good idea?

So the topic for my EE is "Investigating the impacts on Cayenne pepper growth, in terms of size, mass, and life expectancy, using treatment of organic and artificial fertilizer, and by considering its consequences to the environment." but is this a Biology or an ESS topic for EE?? I can't tell which is the one since there is a thin border between Biology and ESS.

Hi, So for my processed data section for my IA, I have to do the chi square statistical test. What I don't understand is how am I supposed to get the expected value. For my IA, I collected data for the population of a species living in two different areas and hypothesis is that one area will have more than the other. So is my expected value supposed to just be a random value I make up? Thanks in advance!

Almost 4 months into the DP and I'm struggling with biology. I initially started doing Art HL but it was making me really anxious and stressed... and after 2 months and a half I changed to biology HL (the only course that fit my schedule without making drastic changes). I went through a lot of trouble to be able to change courses: -Had to talk to a crying/annoyed art teacher -Had to talk twice to my school's counselor (at my art teacher's persistence) and insist I was ok. - Tried to persuade my IB coordinator thrice (until the point my parents actually had to come to school) And I finally I did it.... And now I'm in big trouble Yes, I …

Hey, Time to write my ESS IA is coming soon and I wanted to get a head start. I was hoping you could help me get some ideas for an ESS Survey IA in a metropolitan city as I don't have access to any equipment (which is why I want to do a survey). I appreciate any advice or ideas. Thank you in advance.

I'm thinking of doing my ESS Internal Assessment on the Lotka-Volterra Model. It is a set of differential equations which help calculate some variables in prey predator relationships. But I'M not quite what I could do since only explaining the equations and the model using graphs and stuff would probably not be enough for a high score. What else can I do about this topic?

I am doing a database biology IA and I have hypothesised that my two variables are dependent on each other and that there will a positive correlation. However, after doing a chi-squared test I had to accept the null hypothesis and therefore concluded that the variables are independent. My correlation coefficient value also supports this weak relationship as it is 0.2. Does this mean that my investigation is invalid?

I was just instructed that my research would be unethical to carry out. I was testing how caffeine would affect reaction time, and because I was giving caffeine to humans my teacher said that she would not approve it... I now need to find another idea but I am really struggling with coming up with a new research question that I am interested in... Can anyone help me come up with a new idea? I would be extremely thankful!

This guide comes from the website excellentassessment.com where step-by-step IA guide is published and IB experts help with IAs. This is a trial version only (and I received agreement to publish it) but still there are many very useful information. Choosing topic: It is very important to choose the right topic (and then research question) of the Internal Assessment. Students are advised to familiarize with the marking criteria at this stage since the topic can be considered as good when it allows student to easily gain the highest score. For example it must enable students to collect sufficient qualitative as well as quantitative data, to support conclusions by …

Hey guys, So, I have been having trouble regarding my class choices... I, initially, chose Bio HL, Econ HL, Lang.Lit. HL, History SL, Math SL and Spanish B SL. I have started to realize that my classes don't really match up (at last in my opinion), for instance, Bio HL doesnt really match up with the rest of my classes. Anyway, I was wondering if it would be smarter for me to switch from Bio HL to Enviro, then switch History SL to History HL? The reason as to why I am not switching to Bio SL is because it doesn't match up with my schedule. A follow-up question that I have: Does ESS look bad on university applications and will it make my application less compet…

My group mates and I are trying to come up with a research question that would be suitable for a practice lab in biology. My mates came up with the following RQ: What is the effect of ph on irrigation water in the quantitative and qualitative development of Raphanus raphanistrum subsp. Sativus? We are trying to investigate the different effects (quantitative and qualitative) of ph in radish plants. 1) In my opinion this sounds like a common question; can I get some suggestion as to how we can make this more "unique"? 2) We are stuck on the procedures; we would appreciate suggestions as to how we can conduct this experiment. I just want to make s…

Hello everyone! I was wondering whether it is better if I have a 5 for Biology HL or a 7 for Biology SL. I will be applying for medicine next year (I am about to finish IB1 now), and I'm currently doing Bio HL, and my class grade is a 5 because our teacher is really strict, and no one has a 7. What do you think, if I drop HL to SL, how would it affect my application etc? Thanks in advance.

I'm planning to find the maximum concentration of ethanol that baker's yeast can tolerate. Would this be a suitable topic? Seems a little generic to me...if it's too simple, maybe I could explore whether it disrupts membranes or if it acts through osmolarity differences by comparing it to the effects of a solution with the same osmolarity but a different solute... (e.g. 5% ethanol compared to 5% salt/sugar) Another problem is that the yeast might take a long time to die, so the experiments might have to last for days to show the full effects...

I decided to do database for my bio IA, but I'm having quite a bit of trouble trying to find the data I want. I'm trying to find the incidence of Down Syndrome by country, as either a percentage or number of cases. All I found was data from 2004 that was actually extrapolated, so no help at all I'd really rather not search up each individual country, so I would appreciate it so much if people had some suggestions

I am currently doing my Biology IA. I calculated the Mitotic index of six onion root tips for five different areas from top to bottom: root cap, mitotiz zone, elongation zone, and maturation zone. Now, I want to use a statistical test to show that there is a general significant difference between the five groups' mitotic index. I decided that an ANOVA (One-way analysis of variance) test will be approriate because it calculates differences between more than 2 groups of data. However, I don't know if IB will allow me to use this test because i heard IB may have restrictions on what kind of statistical test students can use. Does anyone know if such rule exist? If it does ex…

Here is a website our bio teacher gave us, after seeing the amount of idea requests, I thought it might be an idea to share it. It has a list of practicals, most of which can be used for an IB bio lab report. There are also some documents such as examples, and consent sheets. http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/practical-biology/topics

All the examples online never involved an animal larger than a bug, are we allowed to do it? Does it go against the new ethical guidelines? Thanks!

Hey guys, I am in a desperate situation. Right now on a final progress check I am almost failing my IB Biology. My teacher hates me and even though I try to do everything to satisfy her (do homework, have all of the notes, score highest marks doing practicals), she still gives me a D from ATL and failing grade on progress check. I try really hard but I just do not know how to answer properly questions in the test to score higher grade. My teacher knows I had to take one science to get to the countries where I want to go but she really (and I mean it) enjoys being harsh and mean. I tried to talk to her several times what I can improve, but she keeps telling me …

Hey guys, Thanks for entering this topic. I have to do an extended essay in Biology which is more of a huge lab report. I chose the topic of breast cancer. For this topic, I have the statistical representation, answers to 'wh' questions and stuff for my homeland. But I am still undecided about my research question. You guys have at some point made really good lab reports in IB, so I thought I'd ask in general. Please do participate and come up with possibly suitable research questions. I'd appreciate it a lot, really. Thanks

hey, so, i have a quick question. just a litte background so that you don't think the question is stupid. i was supposed to have my ib exams on November, 2016. but due to some political reasons, my school shut down a few months before the exams. so i had to transfer to another ib school, which none of the ib schools in my city did november sessions and they didn't have the subjects i took such as econ, wh, or ess therefore they also didn't have the teachers appropriate for the subjects. so we were transferred to 2017 May session. ib was contacted about the issue so they know all this. my question here is, i wrote my ess internal in 2016 so i uploaded the…

So the question is: In cats, the allele for curled ears (C) is dominant over the allele for normal ears (c). The allele for black colour (B) is dominant over the allele for grey colour (b). A cross occurs between two cats that are both heterozygous for these unlinked traits. Using a Punnett grid, predict the ratio of phenotypes of offspring in the next generation. I'm so confused about the genotypes and how it should be drawn. A drawing will really help. thank you.

(Still in construction; last edit: 30 April 2017) Hello there! What inspires me to write this long post is because of numerous questions I got in my inbox are mostly about "How to revise for Biology?" or "How do I get a 7 in my Biology HL/SL?" So here we go. Why should you trust me for this post? I have studied Chemistry HL & Biology HL, which I am a stressful little double-science student potato. The most insane thing I did was to get my Biology from 4 from the beginning of Grade 12 (IBDP1) into a 6 in my IB finals in Grade 13 (IBDP2). I would like to share how I really revise for Biology, a continuation from my post back in April 2016 for all you stressed out …

Would anyone happen to have any ideas?

And in what ways? please give me some advice on how ot make it perfect as know this is not a perfect research question.

Hey all, I desperately need help for my Biology IA. So I'm measuring the content of sugar in bananas with the use of Benedict's test. However, I have problems with the quantitative data because I can only get an approximate value for the results because it's more qualitative and can be obtained by observation rather than calculations. Can a good IA be produces with not much quantitative data? What do you think? I'm aiming for a 6 so that's why I really want to do my IA good. Thank you in advance

Hey, this is my first time posting on this website. I have my exams November 2018 and I'm really starting to panic at the moment. I'm doing Biology HL and so far I've only covered content from 1.1-1.4 and this is the school's progression. With me covering the content I have not been abiding by the syllabus but instead been abiding by Test checklists. My method of study is as follows: Read Oxford Course companion and study guide. Go to powerpoints provided by my teacher and read. Head on over to BioNinja for reading and then memorizing that content. So basically read books memo BioNinja and then I'd do questionbank questions. I'm just extremely wo…
