Popular Post steve.muench
For the last few months I've been volunteering at my daughter's high school to help the 12th graders review for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Maths Standard Level Exam in May 2015. In the process I produced these review notes that I thought could be useful to other students preparing for the exam as well. Review Notes for IB Maths Standard Level I'd be grateful if you email me with any mistakes you find so I can correct them. Best of luck on the upcoming exams. Noticeably Absent
This is really, really helpful! I must admit, first I thought it was a scam (because of it is your first post), so I was a little hesitant. But I must admit that this looks really good, and I was wondering if this would apply for my exams May 2016?
ultimateone
This is really, really helpful! I must admit, first I thought it was a scam (because of it is your first post), so I was a little hesitant. But I must admit that this looks really good, and I was wondering if this would apply for my exams May 2016? Yes, the notes look great! Thanks Steve. And the current syllabus for Maths has been in effect since May 2014, so yeah it's applicable for May 2016.

Popular Post steve.muench
It's my first post, indeed, but you have to start somewhere :-) I've been busy the last twenty-five years working as a tech support engineer, product manager, and software developer at Oracle Corporation (from 1990-2001 near San Francisco, California, and from 2001-present in northern Italy). That is still my "day job", but but I've spent my late nights and weekends recently trying to help my 17-year old daughter (and the rest of her 12th grade class) be as prepared as they can be for the Maths SL exam. Glad the information will prove helpful to others, too. Another resource the students I've been helping have found useful is the free Desmos online graphing calculator (also available as free iPad & Android app). It's an interactive graphing calculator that's in some ways even more powerful than the TI-84 or TI-Nspire CX the students have with them in class. I built them a little Desmos graph to let them experiment with their intuition of the graphs of first derivative and second derivative which you can try in the browser at https://www.desmos.com/calculator/mk4m3wtfwp (Desmos lets you easily save and share graphs with others). Try moving the five points up and down and then clicking the circle to the left of the p(x) and q(x) functions you can turn on or off the graph of the first and second derivatives. See if you can predict where the zeros will be and what the basic shape of the derivative graphs should have based on seeing where the original function has minimums, maximums, points of inflection, where its increasing, and where it's decreasing. Gilbert
Thanks. I'll use it as a resource for next year.
Rosalina
I haven't seen such detailed math notes.Thank you so much sir!
steve.muench
I majored in Math at UC Berkeley back in 1989, but because I've worked since then in the computer industry I haven't had much of a chance to recharge my math "batteries" until this year when my 12th grade daughter's class needed some intensive test prep revision help... Glad it might be of some use to others... If anyone knows of any other popular IB Maths related forums where I should mention it, I'd be glad to post a link there, too.
ellie
Maybe The Student Room? I'm not on there but I know they have quite a few IB students on there. Thank you for the notes!
steve.muench
Thanks for the idea. I've cross-posted it over there in the IB forum (if the moderators approve the new thread I started).
Slovakov
Although I've done HL... and then a course in engineering, I still find these notes very useful for a quick look-up of stuff I've forgotten (especially in probability that I've barely touched recently). Thanks a lot for this! Edited April 24, 2015 by Slovakov
emirbelgil
Can't explain how useful these are now that we're only days away from the exam. Today was my math revision day, and this was a true life saver. Thanks a lot!

Emmi
As an engineering major/math minor these notes were a great little refresher for some of the more fundamental stuff I haven't really touched in a while. I would have killed to have something like this back in my IB days. Thanks for sharing!
kevin8715
Wow, very detailed notes. I am taking HL math next year, but I am so bookmarking this. Thanks.
swepati
Oh Mr. Steve! Thank you SO SO much for this! This is exactly what I need right now! What a lucky daughter Thank you so much really!
steve.muench
The April 29th version of the document contains a new section 3.13.2 on using right triangles to solve trigonometric problems when the angle is obtuse. It was something that confused some of the students I was tutoring last weekend, so I figured it was worth updating the notes to cover that.
swepati
Ok, I came across Matrices in the notes. Isn't Matrices excluded from the syllabus??? I'm having a heart ache because we were never taught Matrices in school because as per my teachers' knowledge it's taken off the portion!! Somebody please confirm
