Hey guys, I recently got my lab report draft back based on an experiment on measuring specific heat capacity through a electric heater. From the criteria, I got a pretty decent grade for my DCP (data collecting&Processing), though I got a 1/6 for my CE (Conclusion & Evaluation) Is there any sort of way to improve the CE section, or any sort of tips to get a good score for this criteria?

I'm thinking of doing the Extended Essay about the solar energy. My goal is to heat a cup of water with it. I have to build a solar panel which I don't really know which type is the best. It's going to be a small cup of water. Which one is better? PV solar panel or Thermal Panels? Thermal panels might be better, i guess, but I don't really get the concept of it. Please help me

I finished my two IAs for physics and was given a mark by my teacher for both which is recorded. But, I only handed in one IA to my teacher to be submitted to IB since I lost the other one. Does IB mark each internal assessment and give it a mark or do they only mark some IA of my class and use that to grade a mark?

Hi, I was just wondering if someone could explain to me what the difference is between a velocity-time graph and acceleration-time graph? And also, how to convert a velocity-time graph to an acceleration-time graph.

ermhagerd im sweating like cow and I am breathing like a dog. My physics exam is in 2 days and I have to still study Nuclear physics and understand force fields and electricity..........GG I am aiming for lvl 6 converted....what is that raw? a 65%? Hello everyone I wanted to confirm this with you cause I wanna see the min score to get a lvl 6 which converts to 90+ on my Ontario grade (report card). So the minimum amount of points out of 100 to get a level 6 is 60. Therefore I need 60 points in total to get a level 6 which is 90+ on my report card. So it is already confirmed, my Ia's are 22 points. 60- 20 = 40. So i need 40 points in total from paper 1,2 and three in total. Paper 1: lets say I get a 50% raw that is 10 points because the weighting is 20% of my final mark. Paper 2: lets say I get a 50% raw that is 16 points because the weighting is 32% of my final mark. Paper 3: lets say I get a 50% raw that is 12 poi…

Hello guys! So as we all know (hopefully), we have paper 1 and 2 this monday, I'd love to have a list to help me cross out topics that I already feel prepared for, so does anyone have a list of the topics that are included in paper 1 and 2? Even if its not complete it would be a huge help... thanks! And good luck everybody!

I know that this might not be about IB Physics but since IB physics is much harder than SAT 2 Physics, explaining these questions to me might have any difficulty, right? Please please! I really don't understand these! 1. A wooden crate is pushed across a concrete floor at 5m/s and released. It slides to a stop after moving a short distance. The same crate is filled until it weight twice as much as it did previously and again slid across the floor at 5m/s and released. The stopping distance for the crate will be: A. 1/4 as far B. 1/2 as far C. the same distance D. twice as far E. four times as far (The answer is C) 2. Hello!!!!!! physics exams are in less than a weekk OMGGGGG so freakin out!!! I really really need help with topic 8 calculation questions, i think those are the hardest for me, Anyone have tips for them? Is there more formulae that I should know in addition for those which are in the data booklet? Tips for the correct formulae manipulation? For example: P2 SL(N11) The inhabitants of a remote island decide to install a tidal water storage scheme toprovide electricity. This scheme is based on the storage of sea water in a tidal lagoonwith the controlled release of the water between tides.(b) A lagoon is to be constructed to hold back the tide. With the physics exams drawing near, I'm wondering what I should focus on. I don't feel confident that I know all my concepts, especially atomic (SL & HL), fields & forces + motion in field, and my options. But I heard that practising is important as well. So how should I use my time?

I am a SL student, I don't have a very good teacher, I can go onto many examples as to why but basically I need to teach myself physics, I have the fifth edition of "physics for the IB diploma" for standard and higher but it sometimes gets very confusing in its explanations... the questions confuse me as well because they seem to throw random things in there.. Perhaps I just need help understanding the equations fully, all the symbols and meanings and where to look for them in questions. Is there anywhere, any websites or books, or any approach to learning physics you would suggest I start? my exam is a year away, I need help now or else I fear I will barely get a level 3

I have a lab report which is related to refraction and Snell's Law. Part of it involves measuring angle of the incident ray and refracted ray with respect to the normal. This is simple enough, and I have found the uncertainty of the angle to be 0.5 degrees. I must calculate the sine of the two angles and the uncertainty of the sine. I couldn't figure out how to do it the calculus way (Taylor), so I just evaluated the sine function at max and min values and calculated the difference between them divided by two. Δ=∣∣sin(θ+Δθ)−sin(θ−Δθ)2∣∣Δ=∣∣sin(θ+Δθ)−sin(θ−Δθ)2∣∣ What would be the significant figures of the resulting uncertainty? EDIT: LaTeX is weird, I'll try to fix it…

I have a question concerning my lab report. i do not know where shall I indicate that sth is used as a constant, and the value of that constant. Now I am writing a Lab Report concerning determination of power of the kettle. The gradient of my graph is equal to m=P*c^-1*m^-1, where "P" is power, "m" is mass, and "c" is specific heat capacity. "c" is used as a constant in my calculations. It is worth noticing, that I do not need to use that constant in collecting, processing, and presenting the data (table with independent variables with corresponding dependent vars). I use constant only in calculating the gradient and determining power, that is, it takes place in the Concl…

Hey IBS. I'm a student that is taking the exams on Nov 2012, and i'm very worried as we haven't finished the IB Physics course, so i was planning on teaching myself two options. Which one do you think that are the easiest? I was planning on doing Option A and Option B. I'm a very math-inclined girl, so i would like an option that is related to a lot of exercises. Is Option A really that hard? I've only done the eye and sight part. On the other hand, is Option B easy? Thank you, i don't know what to do right now!

Thank you!

HI I am doing Physics HL and I have about one month left for the FINAL EXAM. I am not really good at it; I feel that my average grade is 4, although my predicted grade is 5. We know that you have to practice a lot of past paper questions to get a good grade, but what if I start studying it really hard from now plus doing a lot of past papers? Will this help at this moment to get a high grade or not really? Because sometimes I feel that physics needs to be practiced and studied step by step not all at one time! Thanks

Hi, i am doing math studies with physics at higher level, but i was wondering if there is anything learnt in either math higher or math standard that i would need to learn for physics that i wont learn in studies, i am capable of math standard, but it is only the fact that i probably get a 4 or 5 at math standard and 6 or 7 at studies. I will ask my form teacher (who teaches higher and during form gives us some questions from the higher level optional networking topic from higher before school to work out). What do you think he'd need to teach me that isn't in the studies syllabus.

When ever I check with the guide it appears to me that I have completed everything I even look at samples to find ideas to help me improve my structure of my IA. Hi! I am doing the Extended Essays at the moment. I have to finish this at the end of September (I guess...) I just chose the topic of by EE. I don't know how to build the solar panel and I don't know that it is possible or not to build one and use it to boil the water. I need at least some guide to complete this thing. I just completed an internal assesment that was measuring the time it took for a slinky spring to complete an oscillation as it was streched. For my improvements I stated that it would have been better if the material of the slinky spring was fiber instead steel as it would have a greater elasticity and therefore I would have been able to increase the range. Then i stated that young's model could be used to show this and stated that as the limit E tends to 0 the material deforms faster. The link shows the graph http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Metal_yield.svg Could somebody tell me if its right or i messed everything up?

Alright. I'm doing an experiment where results are calculated as an average of 30 measurements. These range between 100-900. The final result is around 800. The question then is, how should I report the uncertainty? I was taught (max-min)/2, but 800±400 seems strange, especially since in doesn't include 100-400 Also, the unc should only have 1 s.f., but this means all but 1 of my results would equal 800±400. This is for my extended essay btw. Should I just mention that all the results have the possibility of having an uncertainty range of 100-900?

I overestimated my math and science skills and am enrolled in an HL Physics course. I've only been in the course for two months and I'm already struggling and having trouble with the hw. I understand the lessons and concepts in class, but when it comes to doing the actual problems, I can't seem to figure any of them out. The lessons in class go by very quickly, and I do go to extra help but there's only so much time that can be spent going over problems. What can I do to understand physics better? Any websites or tips for improvement?

im supposed to sketch an acceleration vs time graph for the following situation: Two forces F1 and F2(t), act on a mass m 1.0kg. Force F1 is to the left in the negative x-direction and force F2(t) is to the right in the positive x-direction. F1 is constant with a magnitude of 1.0N whereas F2(t) has a magnitude of 2.0N for the time interval 0.0s ≤ t ≤ 5.0s and drops to zero after 5.0s. The mass is at rest at time t = 0.0s how do i approach this problem? thanks

Hello! I just started off doing my first labs one of which is determining resistance of an unknown resistor by using the Wheatstone bridge. One of the cotrolled values is the value of the galvanometer which at all times should show 0. As I regulate it manually every time I change the independent value (resistance of a variable resistor), should I still indicate some kind of uncertainty? Thank you!

Hello! I need help with my physics lab report because i have no idea how to work out the uncertainty. If my experiment gives 3 values for 3 different trials: - 340±14 - 350±15 - 360±16 So that the mean would be 350 but what is the uncertainty of the mean? I did google this and found 3 possible ways of doing this: (360 – 340)/2 = 10 (using the range of the all the values) ((360+16) – (340 – 14))/2 = (376 – 326)/2 = 25 (using max and min values) (14 +15 +16)/3 = 15 (using the uncertainties in the values) So what method should I use? Should I quote the answer as 350±10 or 350±25 or 350±15 ? and why? Thanks for your help.

So hello fellows! I have searched the internet around to find any good ideas for a design lab in physics since my physics teacher told us today that we should perform the last design lab today (yeah, great planning I know) however we could also do it at home. However my fantasy sucks and since I'm not that good in physics either I have no idea what I should do, we have already done a "ball- design lab" and a "spring- design lab" but now we are allowed to do anything we want. Therefore I ask you if you can provide any help, like a lab with microwave or something and how this may be applied on physics? It would be great with like as many different ideas as possible

I have a question about significant figures which is really bugging me. It is probably really simple though. This is a general question but I will demonstrate it using an example. Given u=8, v=0 and a=10 (ie gravity as quoted from question). find distance. so, s=(02-82)/2(-10) The textbook gives the answer as 3.2m. However my question is that, as u=8 is only one significant figure wouldnt the answer be 3m? Also when doing a prac and you get a range of figures, e.g. 12.09, 12.20, 11.87. You then give the average to 4 significant figures? If you then, in the same prac, have smaller figures, e.g. 9.03, 9.05, 9.06. Do you have to give this average to 3 significant figures? an…
