Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

As you could tell, i'm doing a biology ee. My adviser has been zero help (as it's her first year to be an adviser) and i don't know what to do. I have a very simple but distinct (by distinct, i just mean not vague) topic, but i can expand on it greatly. Will this be looked down upon? I don't know how hard biology ee are graded. Any advice will be helpful. Thank you all! p.s. a draft of my ee is due soon

Hi! I have a doubt about the "narrative" of the essay. My research is about the effectivity of the Sanger method used in the Human Genome Project, and my RQ is this one: "To what extent proved the Sanger Method useful compared to the methodology used by Celera Genomics?. I started writing the body of the essay, and wanted to give context to the topic (this is, talking about how the project came to be, who got involved in it, when did Celera appear), also, since it's a biology-focused essay, I need to explain most of the biological terms used. I don't want the essay to fall into the "narrative" style, but I feel it is necessary to give context, and it is therefore narrated…

Hi! I'm currently editing my History Extended Essay, and I wasn't sure if I should write my research question in the introduction of my essay, or do I need to reword it? My exams are in November 2018, and I can't find any information on it, and since this is my supervisor's first time supervising an EE, she's not sure either. Thanks 🙂

Hi! I am doing my EE in languages and literature. My research question so far is; How does rupi kaur discuss sexual assault and the female voice through poetry in her works; milk and honey, and the sun and her flowers? I wanted to write an extended essay surrounding poetry that dealt with sexual assault and the female voice (don't really know how to put it, but I mean how woman are portrayed through the media etc) through a feministic eye. Rupi Kaur is very modern and I thought she would be interesting to look at since her work has gotten a lot of attention and I watched her Ted talk and it was amazing. I'm having such a hard time getting started and I've …

Hello everyone, I'm doing my EE in chemistry and my research question is, "to what extent is there a correlation between the acid dissociation constant and the equilibrium constant in an esterification reaction?". I have already executed an experiment in which I determined the equilibrium constant of the five following reactions: ethanol + methanoic acid ethanol + ethanoic acid ethanol + propanoic acid ethanol + butanoic acid ethanol + pentanoic acid Now, my issue is that I have only found the literature value for the equilibrium constant for the first two reactions above. No matter how long I search the Internet, I simply cannot …

I basically want to know if it is okay to research body temperature as the measuring includes putting the thermometer inside of one's ear. I looked at the EE guide for biology, but all I could manage to find was "inflict pain on, or cause unnecessary stress to, living organisms are not appropriate for submission. Investigations that are likely to have a harmful effect on health" My personal thought is that it must be okay as there is a guy in my class measuring vital capacity, which also touches a body entry, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. I'm not sure about the research question yet, although im thinking something in the line of " does eating a propor…

Hey, So my EE is on biology and so far I've got a list of types of equipment used in the experiment, variables, method of the experiment, bar charts, and tables and then appendices and few sources and this only has a word count of 3364 and I have not written the actual thing itself yet, so the facts. I just want to know that does the 4,000-word count also stand for those who are doing their EE on a science subject? I'm also slightly lost with how the structure of the essay should look like, so can someone also help me out with that? Thanks!

Hello all, New to the forum, but kind of need some help narrowing down the topic of Bitcoin as a research question! So here's what I have gathered/thought about so far: Bitcoin is an interesting virtual-currency that somehow stood out from all of the other virtual currencies such as in game coins in video games It's similar to a currency, but can not be considered one due to the lack of government support It's risks are high as cryptography may not be advanced enough to be hacker-proof It's emerging steadily as more investors look into this form of currency/commodity It's core is basically in place, now still needs more advancing Traditional economists dislike the idea of…

Hi so I have decided to write my extended essay on the world studies topic of Chinese traditional medicine. However now that I have chosen this topic, I am not sure where to go next. I wanted my research question to be something a long the lines of "to what extent is chinese traditional medicine effective...". I wanted to answer this by comparing the treatment and its results for chinese traditional medicine with those of western medicine for a particular disease, however I am finding the research for a particular disease to be quite hard. Do you think I should continue to research for a disease or should I scrap that idea and write the essay to be more along the lines of…

I have a tentative research question, which he never told me would work or not, but I need to get my first draft done by the end of the summer holidays. I need some advice/ help. I'm trying to write an EE on China's one child policy. Maybe it's just me, but a lot of the sources I read from say a lot of the repetitive information... It's also hard finding primary sources, since the government is uptight on giving out data/statistics/ truthful information on it. And I'm sure that primary sources would mostly be in Chinese, so it would be hard to translate it properly and what not. For a RQ, I've thought of (this is a rough draft of a question) To what extent did the One Child Policy negatively effect women? I've also thought about a more basic question of To what extent did the One Child Policy fulfill the gover…

Hi! First of all I must say that English is not my first language, I'm learning it at school so I'm sorry for any mistake (really sorry). In my Extended Essay I wanted to write about whether fotorrealism can be considered art or not. I planned to interview some art experts and normal people about what they consider art is, then I would analyze their opinions (as what can be considered art isn't well defined). Also I would include some information from a book. All the information would be used to answer to the question. Visual Arts isn't one of my IB's subjects and my supervisor doesn't know really much about what IB's requirements are, so I hope someone could gi…

I wanted to ask whether this topic would be suitable for an extended essay in chemistry. It involves comparing the effectiveness of different (or components in them) of physical and chemical sunscreens. In order to do so, I can either find out the effect they have on the voltage output of a DSSC, or I was thinking of using spectrophotometry. So is this idea okay? The topic is finalized, but just finding the exact research question/aim was difficult. Any help is appreciated as my supervisor doesn't reply to emails and we currently have holidays for a few weeks.

Hello all, I am writing my History EE on the topic of the New York World's Fair of 1939-1940. Since this subject is not too widely known, I know I have to give background information on the global climate. However, I do not want to cut too far into the word count or divert attention from my thesis. Is there a certain number of words you would recommend? Should I give a lot of context in the introduction or before each claim I use to support the thesis?

I'm currently having my summer break, but still couldn't find a good Physics EE topic to discuss. I've had a few but not consistent meetings with my supervisor, but she said that my previous topics that I've made are too general. My previous EE topic that I've came up with was about the relationship between a change in rate of displacement with the Doppler Effect. I've done my EE draft and submitted, but was not really satisfied with my supervisor's comment (too general and not EE worth [though good for IA]). Then I've decided to leave my previous draft and trying to come up with another one. Now I'm currently having ideas with the application of electromagnetic indu…

My HLs are Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry; SLs are English A, French B and Business. I took psychology last year and I was very interested in it, but I did not pick it so that I would not get overwhelmed. I am still very interested in psychology and I want to write my EE on it (I am also hoping to score an A or at worst a B), is it a bad idea? There is a Psychology teacher, and she is a very good one too. I believe she would also make a great EE instructor. Thank you.

I just found out today that apparently we have to write our first formal reflection for our EE tomorrow! I don't have a specific RQ, but I do have a specific area of study (how the arrival of Uber impacted Sydney's taxi industry). I've gone through the marking criteria for Criterion E. In particular, I was wondering if anyone had any advice on nailing the "demonstrating a high degree of intellectual initiative, authenticity and a creative approach" part of the criteria. I know that the reflections are supposed to be relatively painless and stress-free, but it's the first thing I'm doing that actually counts towards my final mark, so I'm very nervous!

Hello! I have to have my English EE book choice in on Monday, and my choices have mostly been shot down by my school. My number one choice is Stephen King's The Gunslinger but my teachers have said that since he's a "pop culture" writer, IB will frown upon it. They're adamant that I choose a winner or finalist for the Man Booker Prize, but none of the books that have won really seem to interest me. My favorite genre is fantasy, but I also enjoy sci-fi (The Island of Dr. Moreau?), (some) historical fiction, and adventure. If you have any advice on whether The Gunslinger will work or if you know of any other books I could use, that'd be great! Thanks!

How do you structure the body of an Extended Essay? I'm going to do mine in History, probably on Mao's 100 Flowers Campaign, and I'm unsure as to how to plan it. For example, if someone was doing their EE on the causes of WW1 (too broad of a topic, I know, but bear with me), would they do each body paragraph on a different cause? Or would some paragraphs try to disprove/argue against other paragraphs? How do you do it? If I have to do 8 paragraphs on 8 different causes, then I think I might struggle!

Hi all! I'm doing my EE in Business and it's about job satisfaction and high labour turnover rates in my school. For my research I'm using a job satisfaction survey, some interviews, and data collected from the school like official reports and statistics. The issue is that this is mainly primary research and I know the EE has to be based on secondary research but I don't know what to use as I can't find online articles, etc about my school (obviously!). So can anyone help me in this? What can be secondary research in business EE when you're using a local organization? Thanks!

I'm doing an Extended Essay in Mathematics. I am investigating the maximum number of folds for a piece of paper. I found equations that matched with tests I did in real life. The only problem I have is that I have basically all primary sources (my calculations) but essentially no secondary sources. Essentially what I am asking is that, in Mathematics EE if I am doing all the calculations and tests myself then do I really need a bunch of secondary resources?
