Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

I really want to look that "Lord of the Rings" for my EE in English Literature, because I feel like there are so many different themes and aspects to delve into. Does anyone have an idea on how to make it more narrow? I was thinking of arguing against the idea of "authorial intent" and exploring the ways in which the series is a reflection of WWI and WWII

Hey! Sooo... I'm about to begin writing my extended essay, and though I've got some ideas I liked to write about, I'm somewhat stuck with the research question. Could someone help me design (or give ideas) for a research question to begin writing about?? Or maybe tell me some tips if you're writing / wrote on these subjects?? I'm trying to decide myself between writing about the Naval Technologies implemented during the XVIIth century because of the Pirates (defense mechanisms, bigger, fatter ships, etc.) or Spanish Linguistics, maybe jewish influence on the language. Thanks!! I'll appreciate all your help 😅 Lukas

Hi guys I'd first like to thank all of you who helped me pick books for my EE. It was so sweet of you all, and it helped a lot! I have finally picked a book, "The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green. I love this book so much, and I actually have the urge to write 4000 words about it. Problem is, I don't have a topic as of yet If any of you have read the book, please suggest something, otherwise I have to do my EE on a book by Kiran Desai, AND I DON'T WANT TO!!! Thank you so much!!

My CAS coordinator informed us that we need to write 500 words per reflection but I took an insight to some reflections suggested by the IB and they only had a few sentences. So my question is, do I really need to have 500 words? Also, does CAS require efficient planning and acting upon that plan (such as holding a formal dinner for the school) or can it be something I learn in a day?

Can anyone suggest a better research question which is relating to this topic because I do not think my one suitable. Thanks.

Hi we were told to start thinking about our extended Essays and introduced to the idea. I am interested in subjects such as History and World Religions and I also want to incorporate my passion for technology within my topic. (side question: would the topic "Radar changed the engineering/battle strategy, tactics of WW2" be good enough or is it too narrow or broad?) Thanks for the help. Much love :)

Hello! I'm currently writing an extended essay for history about Nazi education in Germany and how it was implemented. This is my current research question: "How did Nazi Education Policies affect the growth of the Third Reich in Germany?" However, I've found that the question's phrasing isn't conducive to analysis. My essay is becoming more and more narrative, but I'm not sure how to fix it. I'd love some help with fixing my question! Thank you!

hi, I've decided to do my EE in Spanish and have some ideas for what it could be about. Any thoughts on the following topics (which would be the best/worst, which is too specific/broad, which doesn't match IB requirements, etc) Here are my current ideas. How does Spanglish demonstrate the creation/balance of hybrid cultures in the US? (¿Como demuestra "spanglish" la creacion/equilibrio de culturas híbridas en Estados Unidos?) How has the increasing popularity of reggaeton impacted language use for youth in the US? Ok, so for my EE I wanted to do something that actually interested me and wasn't insanely boring so I chose genetics. I ended up working with a genetics lab at the University of Colorado using CRISPR to remove genes from a type of fish called a lamprey. So, it turns out that I broke every regulation about animal experimentation, but my supervisor and coordinator thought that it would be ok because I was doing it in a lab with government approval under supervision from actual researchers. They sent an email to the IB and the response that came back neither approved or rejected my EE. My supervisor suggested that I might tell the IB that it is a theoretical experiment, but …

Hiii We've just been told to think about our EE topics and subject areas and I know I want to do mine on Psychology, because I take HL Psych and I am considering going into the Psychology/ Psychiatry field after IB. However, I have no clue what topic I want it to be on, so if you have done your EE (on Psych especially), please give me some ideas or advice on this. Also, in terms of research, what is the process normally like? I just want to have an idea about how everything is done. Thank youuu :>

Hey, I was wondering if doing my extended essay on short stories by Isaac Asimov is okay? I don't know if anyone has read them, but they're a great read and that's why I'm choosing them. My topic is more specifically "How does Asimov use humor to make strange ideas more familiar to the reader". What do y'all think?

I've pretty much decided that I'm going to do my EE in Spanish B, but I don't really know what sort of topics I'm allowed to do and what topics would be deep enough to write 4000 words on (other than the literature option). I am interested in doing the literature option because I do enjoy that kind of analysis but I would appreciate some recommendations on which books to read - also is the comparison of 2 authors or comparing and contrasting 2 works (all in spanish) a recommended option? What are the other options for a Language B extended essay?

Hi, guys. My EE topic due date is like literally tomorrow, so I really need major suggestions by people. (I have ideas below.) I'm taking English A SL, but I'm considering to take Category 3 English Extended Essay. Are there any other people who are in the same situation as me? Taking English EE but it's not their HL subject? I approached and talked to my English teacher / English Supervisor today and like they kinda don't recommend me to do it because my English language proficiency need to be Very high, especially when the markers are Native English speakers, so they'd expect so highly in terms of the language use, etc... But, like my situation is so…

Hi all I'm struggling to decide what subject I should do for my EE. My top 2 choices right now are History (which I take HL) and Spanish B (which I take SL) but I don't know which to choose. I am very interested in both subjects and I think I'd be happy doing either. Any ideas of which would be easier to get an A or perhaps better for my college apps? If I do History, I'm thinking about doing Law and how laws have changed or discrimination/bias in law.... OR world war 1 as a direct cause of world war 2 (treaty of versailles, paris peace conferences, etc.) - I think it's a really overdone topic, but I am really interested in the build-up to WW1(starting with franz fe…

Hello, So to start I wanted to preface with the fact that I really wanted to do my extended essay in music since its one of the only subjects I'm passionate about. I am a musician and I have taken music appreciation at my local community college and am currently in music composition SL. As far as the topic of the EE goes I really wanted to do a comparison of modern pop song's lawsuits. In the essay, I would do an in-depth analysis of the compositional and theoretical aspects in the section of two pieces of music where one was supposedly plagiarized from the other. I would then compare the two pieces and come to a conclusion on whether the lawsuit was accurate, p…

Hi guys, so this is my situation. for my extended essay, i planned to go for computer science subject on something about machine learning. My research question was about how effective a boosting model was in predicting stock prices. So i asked my teacher, and after reading my outline he said that he considered this an ITGS essay. What do you guys think? Can it be used for CS? What should i alter and how to improve? Thanks. P.S. i am also unsure of this topic is too advanced for me as i am not really experienced in the R language or programming in general, but have someone close who is very familiar.

Hi guys, my EE sort of 'proposal' due date where we seriously consult to the EE supervisors and all that are next week's Wednesday, and honestly I'm still so so confused and I need help or just some suggestions or anything, please. Here are the subjects I am taking: Economics HL, Mathematics HL, Physics HL, Chemistry SL, English A SL, MandarinAB. So, since the start, I've always intended on taking Economics EE because from all my other subjects, it seemed impossible for me. I have to choose my EE subject and I'm thinking about Economics and Global Politics. I like both subjects equally and find them pretty much related to each other. I have to submit my choice next week and I still have no idea what to choose! What are the cons and pros for these two subjects? I was thinking maybe it is more difficult to do the research for Economics or am I wrong?

I'm don't know if should do an EE on Economics and Mathematics - For econ, I am going to investigate price discrimination in an airline company in Brazil. - For math, I thought of doing about numerical methods to approximate factorials and investigate to what extent are they useful. I take both these subjects at HL, and I am at a level 6 in both. But I fear of doing it about math. How hard is it to get a level B in the EE about Maths? Is it easier to get a B in econ? Honestly, what do you think of both my research questions?

Hey all, I'm having trouble narrowing down my potential topics/research questions for my EE. I've got renewable energy in Australia (wanted to do an world studies on that and incorporate economics but was quickly shut down by my supervisor), or water pollution in New Zealand. I'm very interested in water pollution and I think there's a lot of material specifically on pollution in New Zealand (agriculture/dairy industry etc). Hi all, I am wondering how strict are the IB about using properly a referencing style. For example, I want to use footnotes in my EE and I didn't know that for that you need to use the Chicago/Turabian style, and I have all my references in APA. Will I get penalized for that in the presentation criterion, or as long as I'm consistent with my referencing it's fine? Because in the IB guide for "Effective citing and referencing" it is mentioned that "IB students are not expected to show faultless expertise in referencing but are expected to acknowledge all uses of other people’s work". And lastly, if I use footnotes to reference ideas from the text, can I write re…

So, my class was told that our EE's are due next year in May and our first draft is due in a few weeks. I heard History is a great subject to look into for the EE but our teacher advised us not to focus on it since our class doesn't take that subject anymore ( ☹️ ). Anyway, I plan on finishing my TOK, CAS and EE before the year so I can focus on my studies next year. Unfortunately, I still haven't come up with a satisfactory topic yet for EE. I thought of doing it on the Western influence on Japanese art but I doubt I'd find any articles or information that could potentially build a 4,000 word essay. I am planning to write about “The analysis of cinematography, sound, and dialogue in family-centred dramas, specifically Interstellar, A Quiet Place, and The Killing Of A Sacred Deer”. My school doesn’t offer film as a subject but I am planning to study as much as I can about different film techniques and all that jazz online this summer. Hi there! I'm currently an IB junior, and I need to choose a topic for my EE. I'm thinking about doing a Music EE but I'm not in IB Music. I've heard that my Music EE score would be negatively impacted if I don't take IB Music. But I consider myself to have substantial knowledge on music analysis, including proper terms and notations. I plan to explore the use of functional and non-functional harmony in modal jazz from 1950s to 1970s. I'm also thinking about doing EE in Visual Arts, and I'm currently in Visual Arts SL, but I'm not sure what type of question I could write about. Hey guys, so I was thinking about doing a Music EE but I'm not really sure how to start? I have suggested to my supervisor that I wanted to potentially analyse the variations of the main theme from Kingdom Hearts but I think one of the biggest issues is that I will most likely have to notate the scores myself. I've come up with some other questions that I could potentially look at if I still decide I want to analyse Kingdom Hearts: 1. To what extent does the music of Kingdom hearts incorporate Japanese culture? 2. In what ways are the themes of kingdom hearts video games expressed through the music? 3. To what extent does the music of Kingdom hearts o…

Hey I'm writing about "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Neuromancer". My current research question is "How is technology and its significance portrayed in 2001: A Space Odyssey and Neuromancer"? From reading the EE guide for Group 2 (English B) I think it fits category 3: The essay should be an analysis of a literary type, based on a specific work or works of literature exclusively from the target language. In the case of a comparison of texts, all texts must originally have been written in the target language. What I want to know is whether my RQ is appropiate, or if I should aim to restructure it.

Hi everyone, I am currently about to post my second reflection for my extended essay, and I wanted to get some feedback before I uploaded it. My RQ is "What is the effect of the exchange of ligands in the electrolyte on the Electrode Potential in a voltaic cell?" After preliminary testing of my original Research Question, I decided to change it. I found that originally, it was too broad, the methodology too complex, and the original experiment was a failure; it did not yield enough results. In response to this challenge, I developed a different RQ, which was far more successful, and I feel that I have developed a greater interest in this topic. Anoth…

I’m thinking of studying machoism in Hemingway works. I was thinking of using a two novels (A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bells Toll), two short stories (The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber and Up in Michigan), and a biography. My research question is “How does Ernest Hemingway promote machismo in his literatures?”, but I’m not sure if it’s precise enough. I’m also not sure if the subject has enough material or if it’s entirely appropriate for an EE.
