Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

Hey all, For the EE I was planning to investigate how the solubility of various alcohols differs in water (chemistry). I have found a lot of information on this, however, am not quite sure if this is a good RQ to use for the EE, and how to relate it to some real-life scenario. Could you suggest to me if this is a good RQ or any other similar RQ's I could investigate in EE about alcohols or organic chemistry in general? I'm really searching for somethign that involves a relatively simple experiment, but a lot to write about. Thanks in advance !! I really appreciate it!

For my Business Management EE, I have about 19 secondary sources and 1 primary source. However, many things my primary source said, weren't corroborated by any secondary sources. My secondary sources were mostly used to justify solutions and whatnot. My teachers told me that I should have a mix of primary and secondary sources that state the same thing, but I can't find any secondary sources talking about the issues I discussed about the company I chose. My EE supervisor told me this wasn't a problem, but here we are. Could this issue cause me to fail the EE?

Hi guys, I'm in my 1st year of DP and our EE coordinator told us to start writing up a proposal for our EE. Now I have a slight dilemma with my subject choices: I really want to do either History or Visual Arts, however, there is an issue with both of them. History: I want to pursue a career in History and I was going to take it up as an IB subject but since we do not have a DP History teacher, I did not - would it be wise to do an EE in a subject that it is not a subject of mine and has a MYP supervisor? I would like to add, though, that I really do like History. Visual Arts: I'd like to look into art history but again we do not have a DP V.A teacher the…

Ok so I originally declared my subject as history because it definitely makes sense to me to declare it history, but now one of my teacher's is saying that my ee is on the border of history and cultural and social anthropology, and i really don't want to go through the whole expensive process of changing my subject for $200 USD when I would still have to rewrite my EE whether i change the topic or not. My RQ is: To what extent did European colonization impact the traditional roles of Indigenous women of Canada Basically I said that with European colonization, Indigenous society shifted from a matriarchal society to a patriarchal society which significantly degra…

Long Post I am in Year 1 taking Mathematics as my subject for the extended essay. Initially i decided to use rotation of conic sections as my topic for my EE but i decided to change my topic again right before my IRS is needed (bc i dont feel motivated anymore on the old topic). Now, i am still trying to think of a new topic so that i can start writing next year. So far i read a Sample EE that garnered 32/36 points. It is about optimizing the distance of the kick of a ball from the conversion point to the try line in rugby considering only the plane parallel to the ground. The EE was easy to understand and as it simply defined the diagram and applied trigonometry, fu…

Hello, I am doing my Extended Essay in Biology and I am soon going to submit my first draft (coming tuesday). I have not, however, started the actual experiment for my essay yet, due to time constraints. My Research Question is: How does the feed conversion ratio of the house cricket (Acheta domesticus) compare to those of traditional Western sources of protein like cattle, pigs and chicken? or (I haven't quite decided) To what extent are insects a more sustainable food source than traditional western protein sources like cattle, pigs and chicken? Essentially, I had an experiment planned where I breed house crickets with the aim of obtaini…

Hello, I am choosing a topic for my extended essay and I really want to do it on film. However I am not taking film studies. My dp coordinator told me that I should not do it, but I want to go to a film university and believe that it would be great for my eportfolio and even a good practice. I would like to know if it is really impossible or if some people did it without taking film studies and still got good grades. Thanks

I've discussed this in a past post, and it has led me here. Rundown of GCR: influx of refugees from Haitian Revolution --> Territory of Louisiana --> GCR (many disputable events because of historians; worries Claiborne that Territory of Louisiana will not become a state of US, so he undermines the GCR to make sure US will accept Territory as a state) --> Louisiana becomes a state For my extended essay I will be analyzing the historiography of the German Coast Rebellion from the following historians in order to understand why the GCR is often overlooked: Charles Gayarre Adam Rothman Francois Xavier Martin Alcee Fortier John …

Hi all, I'm deciding whether or not I should do my EE on "1984" and "The Handmaid's Tale". My topic will be focusing on the representation of female sexuality in the two books but I'm a bit worried that I won't get a good grade because these books are so overused. Can someone please give me some suggestions?

The rough draft of my EE is due to my adviser on November 20th and I am freaking out. I asked my first- and second-year English Lit HL teachers (both of whom are trained to be EE advisers, one of them being mine) if it was a feasible idea to write about patriarchy shown in Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales. One said yes, the other said I would need to narrow it down to an archetype (such as damsels in distress). However, I have spent hours and hours researching this topic and I just can't find articles or journals or any secondary sources that really work with my topic. So I suppose my question is: how important is it to have secondary sources such as literary criticism…

Once the Extended Essay is sent off to the IB, is it still my property or is it the property of the IB? I know they can use my essay as an example, but do they have full rights to it? Or is it still mine to give out as I wish? Just curious.

Hello! This is my first time writing here, but I really need help for choosing my EE topic for biology. It would be good if the topic is in relation to genetics / antibodies / vaccination, and it's also okay if the lab experiment has to be in university labs, although it would be better if the experiment could be done in school labs. It would be great if you guys can share some ideas because I'm really lost and have no idea what I should do, so please help

So I need some help with my research question for my EE. I have string of ideas, but I do not know where to focus my essay. Just an quick non-spoiler overview of my EE ideas: Stephen King's The Shining (1977) Movie adaptation of The Shining by Stanley Kubrick (1980) Second-Wave feminist movement was from 1960s to 1980s, so both works were released during a huge feminist movement. Wendy Torrance is not a typical horror genre female victim. She fights for herself and survives in the end. Stephen King expressed his criticism towards the poor portrayal of Wendy in the movie, saying that she is the most "misogynistic" female character o…

Hi all, I've chosen to investigate Chlorella in my extended essay and its growth factors. I noticed that my topic already had many prior research papers on it. It seems that it would make my research somewhat less original. Would I penalized for something like that? Its already too late to start finding a new RQ because my school need the first reflection to be locked in soon.

Hello everyone, I am doing my ee in physics. I'll get straight into it without wasting anyone's time. So basically in my results after conducting the experiment I have two values for the electron to mass ratio of an electron (e/m ratio). The independent variable was changed in the experiment and it was conducted in two parts therefore leading to two values, one for each part. The values are: 1.96*1011 ±8.63*1010 2.01*1011 ±1.09*1011 Finding the values required using the gradient of the graph results. Therefore to get the errors the uncertainty on the graphs were calculated using the range (largest gradient - smallest gradient) and some propag…

Hi, so my essay has for title "An investigation of shear thickening material in military purposes." I am almost at the finish line, but there are still some things that are trying to kill me slowly. So in my essay I have to study the viscosity of shear thickening fluid called cornstarch, as a way to model liquid body armour used in the military. The first "step" of my ee is to first establish the shear thickening property of my liquid. TO do this i dropped a metallic sphere into a cylinder filled with the liquid and measure velocity of fall and velocity through the liquid. This allowed me to use an equation to find the viscosity and I also used this to find the shea…

Hello, my supervisor told me to include a representative sample of raw data into the body of the essay itself, even though I included it into the appendix already(the data are really massive). I'm confused and I don't know what to do: to include it or not, because even if i include a few samples, I don't think they support communication. My supervisor said it was compulsory to put it in the body. Any thoughts and advice would be more than welcome.Thank you in advance.

Hello, I really want to write my EE on Henrik Ibsen's A Dolls House, however it is a Norwegian author and I've been told that the author has to be a native speaker of the language in your EE. But since Henrik Ibsen is from "Old Norway" the text its practically danish. In my opinion it is like writing an EE on a text written by a British author compared to an American. Can I write my Danish B EE on an old Norwegian authors text?

Chem EE: How much data is enough data

Hi, so I'm trying to finish collecting the data for my ee, which is in chem and I have a few questions based on it.Bt, my ee is based on how hydrogen bonding is affected when samples like glycerol, propylene glycol and ethylene glycol, and when water, ethanol and acetone are added to these samples(in varying volumes). So basically I would be taking a sample of glycerol(30g) and then adding water to ie(3 ml) then I perform the process again, with a different volume of water. This process will be applied to all the other samples. I was thinking of doing this procedure for all three samples individually, and I'm getting quite a lot of data from it ie, the vo…

I can see benefits for each side, in that if it's something people are familiar with they'll have better background knowledge. However, if it's something obscure, I'm less likely to get an expert who knows what a perfect paper about that topic looks like. Any advice?

Hey guys, so my supervisor has told me that large raw data tables in the appendix would detract from communication, and also that I have to include the raw data table int the actual body of my essay. I don't understand how can I do that if it is too long. Also, I mean, if I have 8 treatment groups then of course there will be a lot of data tables, I mean that's my whole research about. Also,I have been told that I cannot just calculate the rate of something to be the only statistical value that I have, but that I need to have more statistical tests. Could you please share your opinion on that, because I'm confused? Thanks in advance.

At the moment, i would like to do my extended essay on the picture of Dorian Gray due to my own personal enjoyment of the book and its popularity. However, through further research it seems that everything that could potentially be written about the book has already been done, and I’m worried it’s overdone to the point that it would be a bad EE choice. I currently am interested in themes such as hedonism and degeneracy, as well as the motif of mirrors/the portrait.

My extended essay research question was: How do the authors of The Great Gatsby and Their Eyes Were Watching God use characterization and common themes as a means of criticising the authors societal structure? after finishing it, i was informed that i cant use a book that overlaps with the work we did in class which is their eyes. and if i wanna do a comparative one book has to be from another language. So now im kinda lost, if anyone has a book recommendation that would be a good comparison with the great gatsby (but from another language) that would be so so helpful.

I've been thinking about what I want to do my extended essay on, and I've decided to do history.
