Hi :-) I am a very passionate amateur chemist and I want to know if I could do all 4 options of chemistry and learn some further org chem. It's pretty like further math, where you study 4 options of math and some further geometry and algebra. I am the only HL student in my grade along with 2 SL students and I think my teacher could spend lots of time on us. So I am wondering if this is possible. Thanks

Hey Guys, Like most people in IB chemistry, I too am Junior and I was just seeking some help or advice on a research topic I am hoping to preform for my IA. So far, the research I plan on doing seems like it will be investigating the heat release of the combustion of different fuels aided by different oxidizers that will speed up the combustion or agents that will slow the combustion down. I hoping to show with this experiment how using these agents how it will either increase or decrease efficiency or completeness of combustion. And, if so, show how using one agents rather than another will allow for a greater, more efficient release of potential energy from the com…

For my extended essay I carried out an experiment in which I synthesized biodiesel from canola oil, I then carried out a second lab with it to find the enthalpy of combustion of each sample of biodiesel that I made. Is this too simple? I did not really have an independent variable in this experiment is that an issue?

Please help me with this question: Question: 25.0 cm3 of 1.00 × 10–2 mol dm–3 hydrochloric acid solution is added to 50.0 cm3 of 1.00 × 10–2 mol dm–3 aqueous ammonia solution. Calculate the concentrations of both ammonia and ammonium ions in the resulting solution and hence determine the pH of the solution. Mark scheme: initial amount of HCl = × 1.00 × 10–2 = 2.50 × 10–4 mol and initial amount of NH3 = × 1.00 × 10–2 = 5.00 × 10–4 mol; final amount of NH4+ and NH3 both = 2.50 × 10–4 mol; final [NH4+] and [NH3] both = = 3.33 × 10–3 mol dm–3; [OH–] = Kb × = Kb = 10–4.75 /1.78 × 10–5; pOH = 4.75 hence pH = 9.25; I don't quite understand …

Please help me with this question: Determine the pH of a solution formed from adding 50.0cm3 of 1.00moldm-3 ethanoic acid, CH3COOH(aq), to 50.0 cm3 of 0.600moldm-3 sodium hydroxide, NaOH (aq) mark scheme: (initial)[CH3COOH] = 0.500 mol dm–3 and) eqm [CH3COOH] = 0.200 mol dm–3; (initial)[CH3COO–] = 0.300 mol dm–3 and) eqm [CH3COO–] = 0.300 mol dm–3; Allow 0.02 moles and 0.03 moles instead of 0.200 and 0.300 mol dm–3. [H+] = Ka = 1.16 × 10–5 mol dm–3 / pH = pKa + log; pH = 4.94; Award [3 max] for correct final answer if no working shown. I'm not sure where that "(initial)[CH3COOH] = 0.500 mol dm–3 and) eqm [CH3COOH] = 0.200 mol d…

The experiment I'm conducting measures the rate of reaction for varying baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) concentrations. I will be putting tarnished silverware into a bath of water and soda within a beaker that is lined with aluminum foil. I conducted this experiment, and my trials suggest an exponential trend. Now when calculating the rate of reaction, I need the equation in order to find the rate order equation. Using prior research, I can determined the equation to be 3 Ag2S(s) + 2 Al(s) + 3 H2O (l) –––> 6 Ag(s) + 3 H2S (aq) + Al2O3(s). I don't see the baking soda coming into play in this equation, despite being the changing variable (as in factor affecting the rate…

Hi, I'd just like to ask if anyone knows whether ECF is completely applied throughout a Chemistry Paper 2 and/or 3. In the marking notes of the Specimen Paper 2016, the following is stated: Occasionally, a part of a question may require an answer that is required for subsequent marking points. If an error is made in the first marking point then it should be penalized. However, if the incorrect answer is used correctly in subsequent marking points then follow through marks should be awarded. When marking, indicate this by adding ECF (error carried forward) on the script. “ECF acceptable” will be displayed in the “Notes” column. …

Hi I am designing my chem IA on quantitative determination of acid content and doing one on acidity of vinegar and I'm not really comfortable with Chemistry IA's... And it seems like google isn't really helping me at all. So just a quick question because I just wanted to be sure, would temperature and exposure to air affect the acidity of Vinegar? Are there any other factors? Also, if I wanted to do temperature or air exposure, what would you recommend the temperature or time range should be? Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help!

I'm stuck in this two point question... can anyone help? During this experiment it is possible that not all of the magnesium would react with oxygen. State one may that the reaction could be helped to completion and how the final mass would be affected if the reaction did not complete. I'm sure you're all familiar with the experiment (heating magnesium in a crucible and lifting the lid to get air/oxygen in to react with air) so please help! Due tomorrow

Hi everyone!! My IB chem SL teacher already approved my research question given I could figure out enough chemicals to use that we have in stock/can order. I'm using boric acid, hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, ascorbic acid, phenol, ammonia (aqueous solution), water, hexane, and toulene. All the solutions/acids will be at 0.1 M. Anyway my research question is "Do molecules of the same bond angles exhibit a consistent boiling point trend?" which of course I will change so the wording's clearer, etc. Does that sound workable? I'm quite excited about the experiment and I'd love to keep it if possible.

My teacher said our topics were supposed to be handed in late september, and I did so, but my idea was rejected, and done so again after I submitted a different idea. The IA 1st draft is due Nov.28 and I have an experiment now, but I still feel like I should ask for her approval but I feel like she'd be upset at me for holding it off so long and she won't approve my topic or do so as a last ditch effort to get me to pass something in. What should I do?

Our teacher just introuced us to the internal assessment and I am currently doing a brainstorm to decide my topic. So far I have identified my favourite topics/chapters which was equilibrium, acids and bases and organic chemistry. Equilibrium is probably my all around favourite. I did my EE in chem within chemical kinetics so I dont want to do that again. Suggestions or ideas for experiments or topics would be highly appreciated

Hi everyone, This might sound very retarded and I know I messed up a bit. I got my IBDP in May 2016 with a 35/45 with a 3/3 for TOK+EE. My 2 best subjects were Bio and chem HL throughout the 2 years as I had continuous 7s. Unfortunately I had a surgery a few months before the final exams which cost me 2 months of classes missing out on time to do my IAs, EE and I also missed a lot of the portion for the exams. My 2 best subjects ended up having the worst grades in my finals. (I know i hate my luck) I got a 5 in bio (missed a 6 by 1) and Got a 4 in chem (I WAS HORRIFIED). I'm applying for medschool so even though my 35 is way above the avg ib score I needed better sco…

Hello, Our school is offering us the Pearson textbook for chemistry, which I have heard is for the old syllabus... I have read on different threads that there is a new syllabus for chemistry starting 2016, and was wondering whether using this textbook mentioned above is still fine? Do I need to buy the new Pearson chemistry textbook for the new syllabus, or can I stick with the current one? Thanks!

I want my IA topic to be about unsaturated fats. Currently I have decided that I want to do the following: Calculating the percentage of unsaturated fats in different oils. Independent variable would be the different oils and dependent would be the percentage of unsaturated fats. Would this be okay? Or should I do something like unsaturated fats and the rate of evaporation. Where different percentages of unsaturated fats (different oils) will be taken the rate of evaporation will be seen? If i do, do the rate of evaporation, how would I calculate the rate? I also read that cooking oils takes long to evaporate so what oils would I use?

hi for my chem IA i am doing "the effect of salt on rate of which ice melts" and my personal engagement is my interest and curiosity about why in colder countries, the distribute salt on icy road, so the story is i have asked the teacher about this idea and she said it was an "ok" experiment which i plan on changing the concentration of NaCl on different solutions and measure the rate of which the ice melts every 30 seconds for up to a minute. the topics i would be covering would include stoichiometry, intermolecular forces and how NaCl disrupts the equilibrium...etc prior to the choosing of this experiment i have given her many ideas however she said "n…

So I want to do an IA on organic chemistry, because it's really interesting to me! I have an idea of what I want to do, but I don't know how to make it "analytical" as my teacher has said? My idea is to figure out the reason why benzyl salicylate has an uncertain smell, and why it can only be smelled by some people. Should I do a survey with people from my school? Or dig deeper and try and discover the reason why some people can't smell it? Also I want to know if this idea is even feasible? Thank you.

Okay, my chapter 2 exam is coming up now... I am just wondering what to expect most on the test, because I heard that there are some concepts in the new IB curriculum that are less important than others. So far, I have learned: Atom Theory(model theories), Nuclear Reaction, Geologic Dating (Decay), Electromagnetic Spectrum, Continuous Spectrum, Rydberg Calculations, Electron Configuration, Calculation (Wavelength, Period, Frequency), and Ionization Energy. I have heard that there is more focus on the concept-based subjects which requires explaining, but I want some reassurance. How should I prepare? Thanks everyone!

Guess Im a bit late to prep already but I wanna increase my score by atleast a point or two. I wan wondering if the study guide along with a few past papers would be enough to assure me a 5 or low 6. Mainly I'm not sure of which option to chose for paper 3. I did materials in the May paper but only got around 22/45 in Paper 3. I am retaking bio as well and so many of the option B topics seems similar. I wanted to know which is a more scoring section and would be able to get me enough marks t…
