Whats the difference between the old syllabus and the new syllabus for chemistry and can I still use the old syllabus textbook?

Hello,

Our school is offering us the Pearson textbook for chemistry, which I have heard is for the old syllabus... I have read on different threads that there is a new syllabus for chemistry starting 2016, and was wondering whether using this textbook mentioned above is still fine? Do I need to buy the new Pearson chemistry textbook for the new syllabus, or can I stick with the current one?

Thanks!

There are significant differences between the old and new syllabus. So it is not possible to use the old textbook for the new syllabus. I would strongly recommend buying the second edition of the Pearson textbook for the new syllabus. And the syllabus actually changed in 2014, with the first exams in May 2016.

You can find videos for all the topics for the new syllabus here:

If you want to know all the changes, this site has a (very) detailed analysis:

Personally my school didn't get us any IB textbooks. The newest Pearson books would be published in 2013/2014, ie 2 years before the first exams. I think Pearson just took the 2nd Edition and revised it for the new syllabus. That being said, it's fine whichever you textbook you use as you long as you know what is on the syllabus, which can be found in a subject's guide and that your teacher can teach. If the chemistry textbook you get is not updated (ie printed before 2014), it would not be worth paying for it.

The new syllabus is quite different, the options especially have been revised. If you studied for the new syllabus solely with old syllabus materials you'd have gaps in quite a few topics.

Here's a copy of the changes to the syllabus:

Here's an online copy of the IB chemistry options (new syllabus).

Option A - Materials:

Option B - Biochemistry:

Option C - Energy:

Option D - Medicinal Chemistry:

https://www.hoddereducation.co.uk/media/Documents/International/Chemistry for the IB Diploma/829055_25_IB_Chemistry_001-102.pdf

Last I checked the new book doesn't include the options and you have to find them online.
