Hi everybody! I need a topic for my ESS IA. But since I’m in quarantine, I need one that doesn’t involve an experiment. Also it has to be easy cause I don’t have much time. Any ideas?? and if possible can you give me 2 ideas?

Hi guys. For my biology IA topic, I decided to focus on genetics and the subtopic would be inheritance. I have a few ideas on what to focus on but I need to narrow it down. So here are some of my ideas: Investigate on genetic diseases. Find the correlation between the variables that led to a specific genetic disease. Investigate a specific gene that led to a genetic disease. Focus on dominant/recessive alleles and how they affect generations of families I was thinking to choose between with family genes or plant genes. What should I focus on? Hope you guys can help me

Hello everyone, I am currently writing my final draft for my Biology IA but I noticed that there is a roadblock ahead in my progress. From what I have found online the independent variable needs to be quantitative but for my IA my independent variables are using different chemicals and seeing how much E. coli can be killed. May I ask if this is still acceptable? Many thanks for your assistance!

I lose many marks on db questions of bio and paper 2 questions of chem. I usually think that my answers are right and complete but they turn out to either be wrong or incomplete. I also feel like some db questions need external knowledge to be answered which are not provided in that chapter. Can you please give me tips on how to answer bio db questions and paper 2 chem question? Also, am I right about needing to know external information in order to answer db questions?

I recently started on my Biology IA and yesterday finished my experiment. The topic for my IA is what is Best Way to Retain Protein within Vegetables in relation to the Amount Needed for Human. I was going to measure protein by looking for the pH (which I did tons of research on). I used pH strips and sadly I don't think they worked. My question is what should I do? I have numbers I can put into a data chart but they well DEFINITELY be off and not accurate. I know that we have too talk about human error and things that affected our experiment so should I just put that information in that section of my paper? It took me about over 7 hours to the experiment and I had to buy…

Hey guys. I have two IA ideas for ESS and I was hoping someone could help me choose which will be better: 1) What is the demographic breakdown of Environmental Value System preferences/adherents regarding trends in age, gender, and nationality? 2) Why are bees so crucial to our survival, and how long would we survive following their potential extinction? Literally any advice would be appreciated :)

I have had a couple ideas now, but none of them seem to work out and i am running out of time, i guess i could say that i am desperate. My first idea was to look for bacteria in cosmetics, but i needed to choose one bacteria specifically, and i just knew that i would not be able to justify choosing that specific bacteria and justify its relevance, if anyone's got any ideas, i would love to hear them (if i wasn't clear, i don't know how to justify the relevance of looking for a certain bacteria in cosmetics). I was also thinking about testing the effectiveness of foundations with an spf factor, but i can't find a methodology to test it, i thought about using a thermal came…

From May 2016 session, science IA is changed so that students can do online database analysis as their IA right? I want to write something similar to this one --> https://ibpublishing.ibo.org/server2/rest/app/tsm.xql?doc=d_4_biolo_tsm_1408_1_e&part=8&chapter=10 which takes the database from WHO and sees the correlation between the incidence of a disease and HDI (Human development Index). Is there anyone who wrote online database analysis IA this year and scored well (7) ? Since this is a new thing, my teacher is kind of negative about it... But I still want to write it, as I can't think of any original IA experiments. Thank you!

Okay so I'm doing my biology ia as a database. The correlation between lung cancer and pollution for each country. The problem is that the data for air pollution is given for each city in the country. I will attach an example. So if I put everything as Raw data, it would be too much, but if I average out the values for all the cities to represent one country, would it still be considered raw data? I'm doing it for European countries only so please if someone has any tips on this matter. Belgium Data.xlsx

Hello everyone, it is urgent. I need to submit my biology lab report on next Monday, if someone is willing to correct it by giving me your Gmail account, it would be so helpful. The lab report is about the yeast respiration (2.8 Cell respiration). Could you please leave comments on my doc? I will share it with you. Thanks for your advance! Yours sincerely

Hi! I'm beginning to think about my IA and I want to maybe focus on the effect of insulin levels on the respiratory quotient? Is this too simple of an idea? My teacher has left us without guidance on how to pick a question and I'm not sure if this is a viable topic.

Hi, I'm currently choosing my topic fo my IA and I'm really struggling with it. I'm aiming at 7 as the total score for Bio, so I would love to get the highest grade possible for my IA (possibly a 7). I want it to be simple and possible to do at home during lockdown. My first idea included the influence of pH on lactase, but it seems too simple to me, so I started to look for some other stuff. The topics that I was interested the most were enzymes (perhaps something more difficult and original than lactase) or something connected with yeast. My other idea was to do something connected with mitotic index, but I don't really know if that would score high and if I c…

Hello! I am a junior in the IB programme and my IA rough draft is due next week and I was marking mine and i wanted to know if anybody knows what the boundaries are between a 7 and a 6. After marking me and my friends marking it, I got a 22/24 and I dont know whether that is a 6 or a 7! I saw that in 2016 this would be considered a 7 but I could not find any further information! Can anybody help me with this? Thanks 😊

Hey, does anyone happen to have Biology 4th Edition IBID by Minka Peeters in pdf? Hey Guys, so I'm self-studying Option B and I looked at the info on Bioninja - I'm very intimidated by the Extra content (EC) and I see that what is mentioned in this section is not always present in the guide. So should I pay attention to this section or not? I'm a bit paranoid about missing out on stuff I should know since I'm already kinda struggling with HL Bio. Thanks for your input! xx

I did an experiment on the effect of fertilizer on dissolved oxygen levels, and tested it over the span of 5 days. Each day I collected data for 60 seconds, so I have a bunch of data. do I need to calculate the standard deviation, and do a T-test??? that just seems like a lot of un-needed work.

Hey! So my current topic for my Biology HL IA is "How does pH affect the glucose content in milk?" and I'm not sure if it is good enough to get a good grade (7). I wanted to change the pH of milk by the addition of bases and acids and then adding lactase which would break lactose into glucose and galactose. Then I would use glucose test strips to see what the content of glucose in all of the samples is. Is it good enough? Should I make it more complicated by checking something else? Or should I look for another topic? All tips and help would be much appreciated!

I have my first draft due in 2 days and my final draft for submission due in 6 days, I have only planned my essay, my essay question is: Are any essential amino acids deficient in a vegan diet? I have just read a thread which specifies NOT to do any group 4 essays without experiments, but, up to today, I have arranged my essay with my supervisor (who has never taught IB) to be literature-based, and I beleive it is too late to change that now; will that affect my grade? Also, I am vegan and was wondering if I take a blood test wether that can be used or identified as an experiment... What do you think? I would also greatly appreciate if anyone knows a place where I can fin…

Hi everyone, I don't have enough time to do a lab, so my teacher is making me do a database IA. There's new research that shows bee venom prevents arthritis, and so I wanted to investigate the relationship between the bee population versus arthritis diagnoses over time. My hypothesis would be that with the declining bee population, there would be higher rates of arthritis. Would this be a good topic?

Hi there! For my Biology IA, I'm thinking about doing a database investigation and investigating the relationship between a country's literacy rate and HIV infection rates. My only worry is that it is not related to the biology syllabus enough to get a good mark? I have seen the tuberculosis and HDI exemplar and that got a good mark but the syllabus relation wasn't always obvious so do you think this would be an ok topic to explore? Thanks in advance

Hey guys, I was assigned my first IA for HL bio today, and it has to be on osmosis. The topic is "What is the effect of variable X on osmosis rate?" however, the teacher said that it doesn't necessarily have to be about osmosis rate. I have some ideas so far, but I'm new to HL bio (well, bio in general, since I was in HL economics before) and I need some help and guidance in regards to good titles and labs for this topic. My ideas so far are: -Osmosis rates on different vegetables (potato, cabbage, idk.) -Osmosis rate for potato slices of different sizes (one with more surface area, etc.) -Osmosis rate on 3 different slices of potatoes (or any other vegetable/etc. that …

Hi there! I'm currently doing pre-IB and it's time for me to choose subjects for DP. I want to take bio HL for sure, but only recently it hit me there's a chance I'll be needing chemistry to major in some bio stuff in the future...The thing is, I never really paid attention in chem class I was convinced I won't be taking it as a subject. Hi! I'm doing my EE on biology secondary research and struggled looking for samples or direct guidance at all so I mainly relied on the IB EE guide book. I've summarized the key points they mentioned for Bio and another summary under the actual text because the other summary I originally made was still too long. (yes. it's that wordy.) so there are two summaries, you could say. Most of what they say are a bit repetitive so I will be posting another clearer version of this once im done with my finals on thursday. If you guys want, I can also change it to a checklist format to make it easier. Hope it helps! BIO EE CRITERIA.docx

Hey, I am currently working on my ESS IA, whereas my teacher has approved my topic, however as my thought was to use (and cite as my main source, but obviously not the only source) a government-controlled experiment report, she was quite clear on the fact that this was not tolerated, as I needed to collect my own data. Yet, I cant seem to find anything from an official IB source stating that this is a requirement. As per my topic is quite complicated, it is practically impossible to gather data myself, however, I have loads of data from that report. So, if there actually is a requirement to gather own data, I have to change my topic. The report is describing why and …

My biology IA proposal is due soon and I don´t really have a concrete idea. Since I´m lactose intolerant I want to do something related to lactose and lactase but I can´t think of what I should do with it. Changing the temperature and the concentration seems a bit too straight forward so I was thinking I´d change the pH but I´m not too sure... Does anyone have any ideas???
