Surface area to volume ratio

Hi,

Take two cells, one has dimensions 1x1x1 (cell A) and the other has dimensions 3x3x3 (cell B).

Cell A:

Dimensions (mm): 1x1x1

Surface area (mm2): 6

Volume (mm3): 1

Surface area to volume ratio: 6:1 = 6

Cell B:

Dimensions (mm): 3x3x3

Surface area (mm2): 54

Volume (mm3): 27

Surface area to volume ratio: 54:27 = 2

As you can see, cell A has a far greater surface area to volume ratio than cell B.

Hope this explained the concept better,

brof
