Hello all... I have quite a unique education situation, and I'm wondering if anyone could enlighten me on what I should be expecting when applying for university this fall. First of all, I am a citizen of Finland, but I have lived in America for 11 years, where I graduated high school in 3 years. I had a perfect GPA of 4.0, college-prep classes, and extra-curriculars. Because of visa issues, I ended up having to move to Finland, where they told me I was too young to go to university (17). Now I'm in an IB school here in Finland. Here are the grades from my first mock exams: HL English A1: 6 HL Economics: 7 HL Psychology: 7 SL French B: 6 SL Biology: 6 SL Mathematics: 7 Th…

I see a lot of people panicking over tuition fees for high status universities, but I don't see why! Most IB students are going into sciences and business. The job market for an Ivy League or Oxbridge graduate is probably decent and besides scholarships, there are various loans that can be paid back a long time after graduation. There's government loans, bank loans and all sorts of international scholarships given to the few admitted to Ivy Leagues and Oxbridge. So why is everybody so worried? My parents clearly don't have the money to pay 200k for an undergrad at an Ivy League, but I still will go if accepted because there are various loans and scholarships that I can ge…

So here's my situation: I am in IB1 at the moment and the previous fall went terribly school-wise. I only did 5 subjects and got 24 points for them. The 6th was self-taught and thus not graded. After I switched schools over the winter break, I now have all my 6 subjects taught and I did some other changes to my subjects, as well, in terms of HL and SL. Thanks to that and some new-found motivation, I've been doing really well lately, getting only 6s and 7s. Still, I am freaking out, since I recently found out that it is my 11th grade transcripts that count the most for US universities. As getting into them has been my dream since I was a kid, and since they are the …

One of the universities I'm applying to, (well, the one I want to enter, actually) suggested to me that I should apply for a scholarship called the Gallagher scholarship. This scholarship is supposed to pay for all the fees, during the whole career, and also the universities' residences and other expenses. It sounds like a great opportunity, has anyone heard of it?

So I am begging to apply for college, and one fo the weak schools I would say, offered me a lot of credits for my HL courses once I receive my Diploma. For those Florida students and those who know, its USF Very weak. I was offered a starting point of Biology and Chemistry II, for medicine, skipping the freshman year. Then, since they are both HL courses, I was offered additional credit and with persistent marks I would be skipped to Bio and Chem III (scores needed to be 6 or 7). Not interested at all in the school, I would call it a waste of time :/ However, it did spark more interest. In other schools I was looking into, the credits gave me simply skipping freshma…

Hello, do we have any members out there who are French and know about the Universities and the system of higher education there? I'm thinking of doing my masters in France, so would just like to get some form of knowledge about it to be able to apply and meet their requirements or something. I do have to admit I want to become fluent in french, which is the reason why I'm thinking of france =p thanks!

A little bit of background: I'm an African-American with parents that have a pretty good income, I go to Rufus King IB School which is the best public school in Wisconsin (214th in the US), and I'm a junior. In September 2006, my dad was called up to go to Iraq for 2 and a half years. Although it isn't really a valid excuse and shouldn't have had so much effect on me, this pretty much marked the point where I became very unmotivated, lazy, and pessimistic. I sometimes skipped school completely and once got a truancy notice. I got a 2.239 accum over those two years. The mark period that my dad returned (March of 2008) I got a 3.0, which still wasn't my best. Fast-forward t…

Kia ora. I have now carefully considered my next years, and it looks to me that I will be going to the Medical University of Warsaw. The reason for creating this new topic was to find out the approximate prices for flats in the centre of Warsaw. After googling for quite some time, I did not really find any sufficient data, and thus I wondered if there were anyone here knowing the price for a square metre. I know there are heaps of factors to the price (such as the location and standard), but a general outlook would be very appreciated. What I am mainly looking for is a flat for two people. Thank you in advance. PS. I am not q…

Hi, So I've recently starting doing my AIFs for schools and found out that I have no idea how to write a good one. Every time I start to write one, it seems that I start to 'brag' about myself too much. Am I suppose to actually 'brag' about myself? If possible, can anyone give me some examples of sentences or methods to try out? Thanks in advance.

I know Aboo says I'm posting lots of Uni posts but hey some one has to, On my preferred university it says this in the admissions page- "Academic Performance College prep GPA Calculated by Cal Poly for 9th -11th grade coursework designated on the application (with honors points granted for courses designated as "honors," “advanced placement" or "international baccalaureate" on a high school transcript, for up to eight semesters)." My main ??? is what are honors points? Does this mean my classes will be weighted like A=5 instead of a 4? Anyone that knows could you please tell me? Thanks, Andrew Row Bibliography, http://www.ess.calpoly.edu/_admiss/undergr...BusSciMath.html

I'm not that bad at math. I originally took SL because I thought I might want to study pure Economics in university. However, I now want to study Intl Relations and French. Therefore, I'm thinking of dropping my Math SL to Studies. None of the universities I'm applying to (St. Andrews, Edinburgh, Leeds, Nottingham, Aberdeen) specify anything about required IB grades in Math on the UCAS website. I think that dropping SL will give me a better chance of getting a higher grade, but I'm worried that it will look bad on my application. Does anyone know (especially anyone who attends one of those universities) whether or not having Math Studies will affect my application in any …

Hey all, 1) when your applying to auniversity in the states, some schools ask u to choose what degree you want to pursue right. and some schools ask u other undergrad programs as a 2nd/3rd option. so when ur applying to the school do they compare you to students that apply to the schoolf? or do they ONLY compare u to students that want to do the same degree as u? lol obvious answer is that they only compare u to other students who want the same degree right? but like what if theres a field never heard of and like few applicants apply to it or like what if its a popular field say engineering, will they reject some of the engineering students even if they're bet…

I applied to American universities because I wanted to go to a fancy school, because everyone else at my school is going to a fancy school. Early acceptances off the top of my head: harvard, yale, darmouth, MIT, cornell. that being realized and said, what's sinking in is that I honestly don't care for most of the schools I plan to apply to. though i visited a bunch of schools, the only two I really really really liked and feel like I would fit in well at are Brown and uChicago. If i can't get into them, I'd be quite happy going to Uof Toronto here at home, which I know I will be accepted into. it's not like my undergrad institution will define my life. so the question …

Both my parents are in finance, have degrees in business administration, and are chartered accountants. My higher levels are history, English A1 and visual arts. I love those courses, and up to this point I wanted to study philosophy/political science after highschool or play piano full-time. That being said, my highest grades are language courses, i.e. French, Spanish, Mandarin. But this IB2 year I've developed a taste for science and math. Knowing that there are right answers and rigor to your methods is really appealing after all this time I've spent in history, visual arts and English. As a result, I want to study actuarial sciences now. Also, prior to IB I've always…

Hey. How do you take college level courses example, linear algebra, organic chem, differential equations all that other stuff in high school? Lol when applying to top-ranked schools in the states or in the world these kids will have such a greater advantage than the regular AP/IB/ applicant. Am i wrong? My Question: Do these people enroll in like summer programs at local universities or do yr round programs? or do their high schools offer them? So far, ive only seen these type of people from the states. None from canada/ anywhere else. Thanks in advance

So I was wondering whether I should pursue a Mechanical Engineering course or a course that combines Engineering with Business Management/Finance. I would be doing 4 year courses (MEng) in the UK. Does anyone have any good inputs? The engineering with business management really appeals to me, but I am unsure if it's the "smart" choice... any input would help! Anybody doing a course like that or know someone that is doing it right now? Thanks!!

I accidentally stumbled onto this article: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/e...icle4321718.ece regarding the comparison between the IB (hehe) and the British A levels. Do you think the comparison is fair? 45 IB points = 6.4 A-level A grades 40 IB points = 5.4 A-level A grades 35 IB points = 4.5 A-level A grades 30 IB points = 3.5 A-level A grades The typical A level offer for Oxbridge/Imperial is AAA. If that is the case, then why can't the candidates who obtained a score of 29 or 30 be admitted into those prestigious institutions? Im just curious

Hi all, I'm in the middle of IB and I'll be graduating in May 2009. Right now I have a 4.17 GPA with very decent grades overall. However, I don't take classes that are too difficult: Highers: History, English A2, Dutch A1 , Spanish B Stanards: Environmental Systems, Math studies. I've done AP Spanish Langauge (got a 4/5), AP US History (3/5) and AP Environmental Science (2/5). As you can see I'm not the best in math and science, luckily I have no interest in studying that. IF I decided to take Math studies (because my math isnt good at ALL ) , would I still get accepted into Anth or Arch courses (UK unis)? If I wanted to do genetics.. probably I'd need AT LEAST SL. Or would I? probably... Is it worth it to do Maths SL and get a ,lets say , 4 instead of a 7 in studies? Well... thanks in advance Ooo and also, As I haven't decided between Genetics and Anth/arch would you say doing HL : History, Biology, Physics and SL: English A2, -Language- A1, and Maths studies would be a good way to compromise between the two?

Hey guys, I was wondering - how do American universities calculate your GPA if you are in IB? Do they just take into consideration your IB score or an average of your IB score in addition to your grade 10 and grade 9 grades? To my knowledge, American universities take into consideration your academic performance throughout all four years of high school. But is IB an exception?

Well, I am an average person. At 15 years old, I do not possess any extraordinary talents. I go to school everyday and I get very very good results in tests/assessments/exams. People see me as a science freak. And true, I love all sciences (not geology i can't stand rocks) I play the violin quite well full stop. That's it. I don't have a long list of extracurricular activities like many of you, I am not the president for any clubs. And guess what? I want to be a doctor. Right now, I don't think I will ever ever be accepted into a good university even if I do well academically. What should I do? Any suggestions?

So, as I've been working on narrowing down lists of colleges that I might attend, I've noticed that more affordable colleges aren't generally thought of as being prestigious, and more prestigious colleges generally aren't as affordable. Obviously, with the economy in the shape it's in, the price of college tuition is going to be important for lots of people. But, given that the people on this forum are involved in IB, I think it can be assumed that we're all pretty good students, so perhaps it would be nice to give ourselves a pat on the back in the form of a degree from a highly prestigious college. So what are your thoughts on this? Which one is more important to you?…
