Hey, I'm going to be writing my EE on Economics, yet in French, and was wondering if anyone knew what textbook is used by IB ECO in French speaking IB schools?/Where I could get one from? The IBO shop hasn't got any/doesn't mention any :/ Thanks!

Hi everyone, I'm just interested as to what your schools do, my school has a policy of 100% IB passes. Therefore, about half my grade have detentions in the IB Coordinator's office right now until they finish their Extended Essays. I barely dodged that bullet. What about your schools? Do they care if you pass/fail? What help (whether it's wanted or not) do they offer you?

Hello! I'm a May 2010 candidate, and I know that IB has changed some things. For one, I know that EE and TOK Essay are weighted the same now, so you must pass both of those. I have some questions on overall how to pass IB. Failing is represented by an E for the Extended Essay, correct? So basically, don't get an E and you'll still be fine? I've heard talks that you can't get certain grades in certain HLs. For example you can't get lower than a 4(?) in HL Biology. How exactly does this work? In our EE packets it says that "From 2010 onwards, 28 points will be required to be eligible for the diploma if a student attains an "E" grade in either the extended essay or theory …

I've completed the MYP Program in Brampton, Ontario and did quite well (85-87 average) but I don't know whether or not I should continue in the IB program (I'm a little worried about the work). I could also go in the enhanced program, which is a notch easier than IB. Some advice would be much appreciated... Thanx

Hi guys, I have read some of the topics and responses , and I need information and advice !? I am going in grade 8 and after that I plan to attend a school with the IB program. Now the thing is I am worried that I won't be able to keep up and that I will lose my social life , and also drop my grades since IB is harder. I live in Canada btw.I would be going into Pre-Ib which I would need to take a test for , now my questions are: What is on the test? (so i know what to study) How hard wil it be? How hard is Ib itself ? Is it worth it? and any tips ? Now I saw that most people said that procrastinating is the worse thing you can do, which I don't at all. I am also an honou…

So, here's the situation: I'm a senior who starts school next week(May 2010 candidate) and is extremely worried about her year 1 grades. The problem is, that although a generally pretty good student, in the IB1 end-of-the-year exams, I had a panic attack during math HL papers, and I managed(!) to get a 3 (never in my life had I imagined I could see such a grade before me). Still, having 7s in all other subjects, I got a year grade of 40 and math year grade of 5. Obviously, I have spent all my sumer revising and rerevising math, in order to ace all the upcoming tests and soothe the shame. However, I am extremely worried that now all my dreams about getting into a good un…

Hi guys, First, my name's Lukas and I graduated from the IB program in May of 2009 with a score of 42 points. I'll be attending University of Chicago next semester, where I intend to double major in political science and economics. Hopefully without coming off as a spammer, I was wondering whether you could give me some constructive feedback on an IB-related article I wrote a few weeks back: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2076007/international_baccalaureate_a_student.html?cat=4 For purposes of disclosure, I will admit that since the article is hosted via Associated Content I technically am getting paid for each page view--0.0015 cents--, but the only reason I ch…

My Subjects: Arabic A1 HL English A2 HL [hopefully, if not then SL. I'll know by Sunday] History SL Math HL Physics HL ITGS TOK So, I already know that I'm missing about 10 days next month because I'm going to THIMUN-Singapore, and I'm missing 2 weeks from my winter vacation because I'm going on a History trip to Berlin. For the Berlin trip, my missing work will hopefully be covered, shame I can't say the same thing about Singapore, though. 1. Arabic- I'm guessing that I can easily cover this as most IB students took Arabic HL and I'm bound to have at least 10 people that can help me. 2. English- This will definitely be harder to cover than Arabic, but I have cousins and …

I'm thinking of ordering some of the guides from the IB store. The DYP's starter guide is the only one im sure of ordering along with the History SL one. The other ones, such as the Math HL, state: "Guide to the course that begins teaching in September 2006 for first examinations in 2008." So, my question is, are these the latest guides and will they cover the same topics/ will I be safe using them as part of my revision or are they outdated and have no use?

Hello This is sort of a multi-faceted question, but I think it fits in this sub-forum. I'm starting IB2 next week, and have been consulting with my coordinator about possibly switching from History SL to HL. This would give me 4 HLs and 2SLs. I would still be in the SL class, and do independent study on the regional (Americas) topics. The only reason I am planning on doing this is for university-app boosting. I'm currently predicted a 7 at SL, and since I'm applying to Harvard, I want to present myself as accepting a very tough course load (4 HLs as opposed to 3), and having 3 7s at HL as opposed to 2. Anyways, my questions are whether 4 HLs are appreciably more difficult…

Hello all IBers, lately I have been under a huge amount of trouble in my IB2 year course and I am hoping for this thread to become something helpful for all of us in terms of how to actually survive this 2 year program which many of us including me, find extremely difficult. Here is the thread where I posted some hints and notes on how to survive IB: But, lets take it a step further. We all know that surviving the International Baccalaureate (IB) is probably one of the single hardest tasks you can put someone up to! Here is an interesting article I have found about surviving IB: http://www.goarticles.com/cgi-bin/showa.cgi?C=1843816 Also, Sleep has probably become…

Hey everyone, I need some help sorting stuff out. I am a senior entering into my last year of this horrid program. ok basically school starts in exactly 7 days and i am stuck with an extremely large amount of summerwork that i have procrastinated on (who wants to take a guess at what the "P", in my display name means?). basically i have the following: 1) Read Madame Bovary and take a journal on it, noting all the events and important things that go on in each chapter (including, plot, symbols, themes, motifs, characterization etc.) This counts as a Test grade for my English Class. 2) Complete a Rough Draft of my World Lit 1 paper. 3) Complete a Rough Draft of my Exte…

IB is starting in 11 days and I'm really anxious, as I don't know what to expect. Anyway, today while I was coming back from basketball practice, I saw a friend of mine attending the IB as well and she told me that she's been having private lessons before school starts, but she will continue having them during the whole 2 years. My sister told me that I shouldn't listen to what everybody else is doing and I should just focus on myself, but this whole thing made me worry. So I would like to know if you believe that private lessons are necessary in IB and if any of you have had any :/ I've been revising everything we did last year but I hadn't thought about having private l…

Hey guys, I received the booklist and assignment papers yesterday, and the papers said that i need to read 4 different stories listed on the paper. Is this really needed? because i might not have time to read at all, since im moving to a different house and i need to be helping with the packing and un-packing. So will it affect if i dont read them? or its alright because we'll read it in school when we start the year? (Entering IB next year in Sept.) thanks

So as of now the summer is dwindling down and I have a big decision to make, to stay in IB or to drop out and go to regular high school? I've finished the first year of IB and now I'm about to begin the second year. Throughout my junior year, my grades suffered a bit. Though I was able to keep a steady A in Math Analysis, Psychology, and Spanish, I got C's in AP US History and AP Biology. (And B's in my other classes.) To top it off, I only got 2's on AP US and AP Bio and a 1 in AP Spanish, which made me worry about the IB exams in those subjects. I'm also worried about English since I didn't do too hot on my IA last semester and I'm not very good at literary analysis. In…

My school and another school in the area are the only ones that run the IB Programme. However, my school places IB and non-IB students in the same classes, whereas the other school has separate classes tailored toward IB students. I'm not implying that IB students should necessarily get some kind of superior treatment, but this year in pre-IB English my teacher pleaded for anyone who could switch around their schedules to do so so she could have all the IB students in one period. When the IB students would be discussing a book, the non-IB students would have to listen in confusion and I think it was just tedious since we always had to explain what was happening, and it wa…

What are the pass rates? I'm in the second year of IB students my school has and I'm going into grade 12. I only ask this because out of the grade 12's that just graduated, 17 failed and 18 passed! There have already been 2 girls that dropped out, bring my class number down to 17. So my question is, is it worth it to stay in? Is this pass/fail rate normal? Or is it something to do with they way they were taught?

Hi people! I seriously need you help. I have to hand in my final IB decision sheet, and I’ve come across a dilemma. Chemistry . Should I do it HL or SL? I could perfectly do either, because I’ve already got three other HLs (Economics, Spanish A1 and Mathematics) Reasons for which I’d do it HL: Main Reason: to show in my uni applications that I did four HLs. I like Chemistry Reasons for which I wouldn’t do HL: SL is much easier, I’d ge t a 7 head on (sorry if I seem a bit sure of myself, but it is true.. unless I suddenly come down with something the day of the exam.. ^^; whereas if I do HL, I could get a 7 but there’s always a possibility that I get a 6. Do/did you skip IB classes to study at home? I'm seriously thinking of skipping two classes a week that ruin my schedule completely. I can't stand having to wake up at 6.30, start school at 8.20 and finish at 16.30-17.00 four days a week, with huge gaps in between classes and having to travel 1 hour to get to school. I don't think I will miss that much. The schedule that I have right now is probably more likely to affect my grades in a negative way. =/

Background info.: I've been on TRS recently and, as many of you probably already know, there is this huge debate going on over there about IB v. A-levels. Basically, they are saying that universities still don't understand the difficulties of the IB and are giving offers that are very high. Example: some universities offer 38, 666 HL while they also offer AAA in A-level. Apparently, it is a lot easier to secure the A level offer of AAA. The IB also have to do 6 subjects (while A-level students only do 3) and extra stuff like CAS, TOK and EE. So what does this mean? That taking IB will reduce my chances of getting into a universities? I posted this here and not in the univ…

I received an email today because apparently I gave big brother permission to send me crap in my email. The IB is starting a virtual community where examiners, teachers, coordinators etc AND students will be able to communicate all over the world. Fill out the survey if you are an alumnus, I just received my email today. Stuff that may/should be included: wikis, sample work etc. I think their aim is to make it like facebook but with less useless crap and a more education/global-oriented focus. Finally the IBO has done what is necessary. I'm not sure when it'll launch but I'm sure they'll be lots of kinks to work out after it launches. So look forward future candi…

I just started IB this year (Australia, so my exams are November) and I'm really enjoying it so far - I love doing the CAS and TOK stuff, and I put time aside especially for it. My classes seem okay, people have told me I'm doing difficult subjects (Modern History, and Psychology for Humanities) and even though I'm passing my internal assessment, I'm getting really worried as to whether I'm doing good enough to manage to pass. My language (Japanese) is no trouble, I'm sitting on 89 - but my other subjects I'm only getting around 60, or a C. I'm finding some aspects really difficult in all of my subjects, but in other places, I'm doing really well, so I'm freaking out beca…

I don't function that well without a tight schedule, and right now I have nothing much going on except job hunting, shopping (can't do much w/o a job), and getting fat. Any ideas on how to utilize my time? I have about 18 hours a day to waste, and I no longer enjoy sitting watching TV/surfing the net all day (pity, would have been a great time waster). OK, this is an issue I've had with IB for a long time. Despite a lot of people's laid back and cheery facades, they are really just pure evil inside ('kay, I'm starting to exaggerate now... haha). But have you guys ever had any problems with classmates who seemed just a tad bit over-competitive? In my experience, this seems to happen quite a bit. I ask some of my classmates questions and they seem to deliberately withhold information from me. For example, before, I was asking this kid these problems about VSEPR theory, and he just kept on shifting the topic and laughing it off. He said he didn't know how to do the problems but ended up with a 95% on the test the next day?…

This isn't actually about how the IB can quite easily make its participants into social loners (discounting fellow IB people), but rather about whether the IB should and can only ever exist alone. Our school attempts to run both courses alongside each other, which is something of a giant disaster area. Teachers can't cope with more than one course, and many of our teachers appear unaware of the fact that the IB has a syllabus and is actually realistically timed, preferring to teach us random facts from the A Level syllabus ('you never know') and telling us that the IB can never be finished ('it's meant to be like that') respectively. I'm interested to see whether it is pr…

Help on How to Write an IB Paper 1. Sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a well-lit place with plenty of freshly sharpened pencils. 2. Read over the assignment carefully to make certain you understand it. 3. Walk to the local Starbucks and buy some coffee to help you concentrate. 4. Stop over at a friend's house on the way back and visit with them. If your friend hasn't started the paper yet either, you can both walk to McDonalds and buy a hamburger to help you concentrate. Hi, what I was wondering was if exams for the same subject and level in different languages are translations of each other or written separately? This is a fairly common scenario in my school (especially in Science) where there may be two Physics or Biology HL classes (it also happens in SL), but one is taught in Spanish and one in English. I'd assume they are translations since a heard of a student who did physics in Spanish but preferred to do his exam in English, but I'm not sure if that's just a rumour.

Hi I'm wondering how everyone's schools convert their IB levels to percentages for Ontario grades. Since I had two 7s in my SLs last year, I only know that 7s get converted to 100%. But for people who got 6s apparently got different percentages, like 90 or 93. Does the conversion depend on your exact marks on the exams or depend on your predicted? Thanks!

Hi my name is rabyl and fairly new to this community... So my question was that some of my teachers sayed that for the ib program marks are different from the normal streams and some of the differences were that ib gives you extra percents for exams and assessments...?? So for example if you and a guy in a regular stream got 70 percent on a familiar math test the ib guy would get 74 and he would still have 70 for comparison?????????? is this true!?!??!
