Hello, I am in IB and my school's very competitive (meaning my IB mark could be WELL above my Ontario average which I am going to give you in a second). My Ontario average is a 90 and last night, I visited a friend who's in AP and I looked at the AP books. They are SO much simpler. The program is way less demanding in terms of volunteer hours, essays, etc. He's taking 'CREATIVE WRITING' instead of English and it's SO incredibly FOOOOOLISH. I mean commmmeee ooooon. Writing a random page of your autobiography can NOT be even remotely compared to what I have to go through to write a 1500 comparative on Hamlet and Death and the Maiden about a thoroughly intellectual topic …

I'm not looking to achieve an extraordinary score in the IB, but would also like the achieve the diploma If I get an elementary grade on the extended Essay and a C or B on the theory of knowledge essay am I still clear for a diploma? The IB grid shows that an E on both assignments eliminates eligibility, but I'm still worried that an E on the extended essay will extricate me from the opportunity

When we get inducted into the IB at our school, we get these small circular pins with the IB logo... so my question is: does everyone else get these? and if you do... what do you DO with them? mine's simply been sitting on my shelf for 6 months now. I feel like it should be seen by more than a stack of books. Does anyone wear theirs? Put it on a jacket/bag? ...or anything else? I'm just curious.. or in need of a creative display idea

I am really concerned about my marks with IB, right now i am sitting at an 85 overall average for 4 subjects, and i know that it is only going to get worse when i get to gr12. And if i am in normal academic classes, i prolly be hitting the higher 90s for my average (most people who dropped out of ib are getting those marks) so i am wondering... is IB really worth it? do uni actually look at the 85 and say, "hmm, that's not bad for ib"

Finnish A1 has a relatively new principal examiner. She is a professor in Finnish and teaches at a French university. Seems okay on paper, doesn't it? In practice, however, she isn't very qualified. The first exam she prepared was the May 2007 one, which our teacher considered to be a poorly drafted one, especially in terms of Paper 1. There is one thing, however, that particularly makes me want to cry. This is a direct quote from the May 2007 Finnish A1 subject report: [quote name='Finnish A1 Subject report May 2007, General comments on Paper 1']"It should also be noted that numerous candidates have illegible writing [b]and, instead of using an eraser, make deletions …

List of IB Textbooks: All Subjects! 1 2
by Guest syrianstar- 39 replies

Hi everyone, My school has just started the IB diploma this year so this a new experience for the full IB students and the teachers. Halfway through the year we found that most of our textbooks were pretty much useless (either too detailed or simply not complicated enough for IB ) so I hope to get some suggestions on any textbooks that people have found useful while studying for their IB Diploma. I take English SL, Chemistry SL, Maths Sl, Biology HL, Economics HL and Arabic HL - though suggestions about textbooks on any subject would be helpful for those who take other options. Thanks in advance!

I'm taking my IB exams in May 2009, and I'm thinking it may be a good idea to begin getting organised on revision notes on all the topics I have learnt already but there are some subjects I really struggle with! Especially SL Biology and Maths So if anyone who has taken their IB exams already or has bought revision guides which they found to be useful with these two subjects could you please tell me? Thank you! Jenny

HL math vs. HL english vs. HL Physics [URGENT]

Right now I'm in HL math. I choose HL math because I enjoy the teacher, although stupid me hasn't been paying attention throughout the year. I didn't pay attention to limits, related rates, integrals, and partly derivatives. I don't want to switch to math methods but I think I might have to because I think I have fallen pretty far behind and I usually get D's/F's on my math tests. methods and HL I heard are basically the same classes yet the methods tests are harder and there are no "make ups" for methods. Also the HL tests are more confined (ex. a test on 4.1-4.5 and another test on 4.6-4.9) compared to the methods class (ex. a test on chp. 4). The methods class gets …

Some of you have just finished the May 2008 exams, and we want to congratulate you on finishing what I would say is the hardest academic experience you are going to have to go through, at least in terms of workload. Obviously I hope most of you will be going to University within the next two years, and I'm sure you'll see that University is far less work (amount of work) than the IB. Although the IB was stressful and annoying, you'll see that many of the skills that you learnt throughout the IB will make University so much easier.. Research.. Referencing.. Doing your OWN work, etc. All these things make University life so much easier. Anyway, for those of you that are do…

As a matter of interest, what do 7 (41-45/45) IB students when they're not at school? What is/was their daily routine; How much did they procrastinate everyday? How long did they work in one stretch? When do they start and stop working? What time frame is reserved for home work, and what for studying? Do they just combine the 2 and save time? How much do they mess around with friends? etc.. 7 students, give me some inspiration.

So the teachers at my school basically came out flat and said no one will get a 7. "I dont give out sevens". And following footsteps, my other teachers have gotten a hold of the moto, and simply refuse to grade appropriately. Their thought is, that if Ib sees their grading as too general or weak, the 20 people which get picked will influence all IB scores to go down. And there is some testimony to this, since the teacher that proposed it has had her scores ALWAYS go up after exams. She said she gave out a single 7, for someone who was in language B but fluent in French I am just wondering, to what extent does IB catch these cases, outside of my teachers reputation. I…

Hello we are a couple of students from Denmark in our first year of IB... We are currently trying to make an IB revision game, under the project of young enterprise, we would like to hear some responses or ideas to a game like this would you be interested? Our Idea is to make an free online software with a database questions of all IB subjects, the game would probably look like a trivial pursuit game. Our most important task is to make this game interesting, simple and exciting. This would prepare students for the final exams and hopefully improve grades around the world. Currently we are developing the business plan and searching a support from the Danish Nordea …

Hey guys, I have some confusion with some IB procedures. WHat is the difference between May and November exams. Can a student opt to take November exams rather than May exams? How are re-takes done, and who decides whether or not you can take a re-take. If you have a re-take, do you also have extra time to turn in missing assignments? Also, what is the difference between IB1 and IB2. As far as syllabus, exams, etc. Finally, how exactly does the certificate work? Do you get certificates for specific classes . . . how many points are required to earn a certificate. I'm soooooooooo confused, please help . ... .

I have been contemplating on the accuracy of the predicted grades, and I was wondering if those who have already graduated from IB could post their predicted grades and their actual grades. I have become a little bit worrisome on the fact that our predicted grades are equally if not more important than our actual grades and become curious on the accuracy of them. If any one can help me with this I would be grateful.

Holy crap... I just found out that I've got the best Math 30 (Grade 12) mark in the school so far (80% - report cards come out soon, so who knows...) The same goes for my FSL 31a mark Whereas mark in Physics 20 and English 20 (Both Grade 11) are in 65% and 72% respectively. I dunno what's wrong with me... I guess the Unit circle is just too easy... Anyone else have this odd situation?

Hello, I just wanted to know if all you other IB schools require you guys to come in at homeroom registration even if you start at like 1pm. Our school just enforced this and we are going to try and fight it ha. if anyone could give some of those statistics stating that kids with better sleep study better, etc etc... anything really that could help. I mean, would it be better to come in whenever you had class rather than come at 8.30am and wait all day, studying at home is way better than library anyways...just my two cents. thanks for the help.

IB IS challenging and i strongly doubt that anyone would say it is too easy or i love it!! if i'm wrong, please prove or explain to me!! anyway, when i reached that point, and i just can't take it anymore, i do some crazy stuff. other people probably cry or throw stuff ( which i tried but it wasn't so effective) i would simply jump or run until all of my energy ran out and go to sleep. i looked like a maniac by the way, but i do feel a lot better. you? p.s. if you found out that my method actually gonna work, please let me know. a sincere thank you

Guess again. Once more, they've proven that they will go to any extent to rip the students off, even if it means lowering our final marks. Want proof? Check out page 17 of this presentation of the recent administrative developments. For those who are too lazy to click the link, here's what it says: Article 19: Enquiry upon results The current article 19.2 states: Re-marking a candidate’s externally assessed material may lead to a higher grade for a subject, but not to a lower grade. Coordinators may request a re-mark of externally assessed material (category 1), the return of externally assessed material (category 2) and/or a report on the moderation of internal assessm…

I just started IB this year and realized that I don't really understand how the grading system works. What proportion of the final grade is from internal assessments and what is from the external assessments? How does it all get converted to a score out of 7? Is a final grade for a SL class and one for a HL class count the same toward the diploma? And is the IB grade for a class separate from the percent grade we get for our school? thanks

Well I know AP & IB don't work the same way and aren't the same. But if you do IB test and the AP test do they both count toward college credit? Because I know the AP score does but what about the IB score? Where does that goes? I really don't know how to explain it...can you take both the IB and AP tests and have the both go to the same place?

It's very annoying to deal with TOK, EE, and CAS while you could be taking more classes. You have to invest a TON of time in them. Like for me, i wanted to take psychology and history, but only six subjects are allowed, and you can't triple dip in one group. What do you guys have to say about the negative side of I.B? (except of course for all the headaches and stress)

A full time IB Diploma student, our school also encourages us to take the AP tests, mostly to bring up the school's testing average. Any teacher of a class who has their students take the AP test as well constantly says something along the lines of: IB is trying to find out what you know, while AP wants to discover what you DON'T know. and basically, they say that the IB tests are easier. I somewhat agree, because of so many open and broad questions that are in the IB exams... Psych for example asks broad essays where you can answer in the area of knowledge that you are strong in. AP tests however have multiple choice questions that insist that you know small details abou…
