Bad science

According to this article how is bad science being used? I do not get it..Your inputs are greatly appreciated. Christmas is a time for harmless lies, the chocolatey indulgences of the thought world. We know when to stop, because if we all acted on our belief in Santa there would be no presents: and then Christmas would be meaningless. My favourite Christmas traditions are the “red wine is good for you” and “chocolate is good for you” stories, which have become a festive science tradition of their own. Red Heart Wine, from Sainsbury’s, with extra antioxidants, is “a red wine that is actually good for your heart”. Drink it down with new Choxi+, milk chocolate with “extra an…

Hi! So I have my TOK presentation next week and I have thought about talking about how the unknown prevents us from actually learning growing as human beings. I will explain myself: For example, shocking images in art, we are blinded by the "shockness" of it all, and truthfully, we are only "blown away" because as a society we are not used to that type of experiences. All our day to day life is very bland and basic, both visually, sonically... So when we are exposed to "shocking" images, sounds, experiences we are unable to see past the initial "view". So we are afraid. I suppose you could relate it to phobias... I will be explaining it by relating my idea to: 1. Art 2. S…

I'm thinking of doing: To what extent can reasoning be unaffected by emotion?. I would talk about the effect of emotion on reason. I would research if it is possible to use reason with absolutely no emotion involved. I’m really not sure if it is a good topic, what do you think?

Hi there, I have decided to do the above topic for my TOK essay. I just want to run a few ideas past you to see if they will be ok. Semi structure: Define Search for Knowledge Newton/Einstein (Science) Newton old Eintsein new Newton low speeds Einstein everything Geographical Models (Social Science) Boserup/Malthus DTM Changed to suit newly evolving patterns Time dependant English Rules (Language) Always exceptions So diverse hard to have simplified model Maps (Language/Social Science anyone know???) Hey people, I've gotta do a TOK presentation on "Does the number of words for a certain idea in a language represent the core values for the culture that speaks it?" I've done a bit of research, it's below, and now I just gotta find a few decent KI's, and somehow link it to other AoK's Help would be greatly appreciated! The research I've done: Does the number of words for a certain idea in a language represent the core values for the culture that speaks it? Example 1: In Gujarati, there are many more words for family members than in English. For example, you have a different word for your father’s brother and your mother’s brother. In English, these would both be uncle. …

So I was given the Japanese Nuclear Crisis as a real life situation from my teacher and I was just wondering if the knowledge issue i extracted from it was alright. So as I did research on the topic I realized how people were coming to conclusions on Nuclear energy when they seem to know nothing about it, coming to generalizations simply because of the Nuclear Crisis and the label "Nuclear". They assumed that the acquisition of energy through nuclear power plants was somehow directly related to Nuclear weaponry, which is not the case at all. Because they both carried the label Nuclear and due to the connotations of it, people that lack knowledge automatically assumed that…

Does anyone find it strange that the TOK course is made to broaden your mind etc. However, in the syllabus we are told to at the end define Art, define culture etc. I believe that TOK has tought us that these are not simple answers and there is really no answer. However, if we wrote "art is many things and cannot be put into words" we would fail outright. What are your thoughts? Does TOK actually limit you in some ways?

Hello guys. I was hoping someone can help me with my TOK Presentation. I want to do it on like "Area 51" or "Aliens" but I don't know how to start. I was thinking something like "Can we trust our government to tell us the truth" and use the "Roswell UFO incident as a bases for it. There are a ton of knowledge issues there. Verification/Hard Evidence, Bias, Uncertainties, ect.., And this links to the Area of Knowledge History, But yeah, any other tips, tricks or advice on how to start? Is this even a good topic?? Thanks!

I have been struggling with knowledge issues in TOK. Every time I get my hands on a new topic that has so much potential there's never a good knowledge issue that I can come up with. I tried talking to my TOK teacher but she dismisses all of them for being either too narrow or descriptive. I finally came across Homeopathy and I find it very interesting but I still can't find a proper knowledge issue that I can link to different areas of knowledge. However, I have thought of something in the lines of the methodology used and how it varies in different areas of knowledge. I'm kinda stuck with how to connect the following KI to different areas of knowledge: "How can we test …

Hello! I'm new to this website, and it's interesting to read all the discussions and posts I will be having my ToK presentation in a week or two, and I've been really interested in investigating the validity of certain analytical essays on Rebecca Black's 'Friday' (about its existentialist themes, etc.) that I found on the internet. My topic is: How is meaning in art/literature formed?, and I want to focus on the author's intentions (perhaps Freud's psychoanalytic approach to literature), the content of the artwork (structuralism?) and the audience's response (reader-response criticism). Is that a valid knowledge issue? I'm not so sure if my approach is appropriate for a…

I'm doing a TOK presentation on advertising and how they use our sense perception to attract. How can I expand on this? I wanted to talk about the ethics - is it moral to manipulate our senses? Advertisements are altering the reality of the acquisition of knowledge. (?) And talk about how some advertisements won't be attractive to some because of experiences; I could then expand into the theories of relative knowledge and truth.

I finished writing up my TOK essay and my teacher loves it. But I'm not sure if I can rely on her. It's her first year teaching TOK and she gave me 36/40. She didn't comment on it much, just saying that I need to fix up my grammar mistakes and stuff. But, I'm not sure if I can trust her marking. I think my essay was over rated... Can someone help me get through this? I'm super worried because I don't know where to fix up..... Someone who isn't in Nov 11/ May 12 and thinks they can help me, please PM me I'm dying of needing help. Thanks in advance

For my ToK presentation, I wanted to revolve around the topic of Social Norms. At first it was just Culture & Taboos, but eventually it became Social Norms, you know, things you just know to do or not to do; Being courteous, not saying mean things in front of your friends, not saying bad words in front of kids, not standing too close to people you don't know, etc. I wanted to maybe talk about things that are debated as well, such as maybe breast-feeding in public. Any more examples would be helpful =) So, I figured the knowledge issue could be something like "What constitutes a social norm?" Now I'm just wondering if that is a good issue. What I also was thinking of i…

Hey there! My ToK presentation is in 22 days, and my partner and I are thinking about talking about how schools limit personal development, with particular focus on creativity and how creative subjects tend to be given less importance than, say, mathematics or sciences, as those are the ones which measure "intelligence". Since the Western world puts a lot of value and importance to said "intelligence" (by the use of SATs and such), the creative areas tend to be left behind - and also, since we are taught that making mistakes is wrong, we become scared of trying out new things in fear of getting them wrong, which then limits us to a specific, "inside the box" way of think…
