I'm very confused about how to go about dealing with this essay... here's the very very rough outline that I have so far: Introduction: -how can we have knowledge about something that has not been proven true? -knowledge= a justified, true belief -thesis: yes, we can know something that has not been proven true. Now to explain how... I decided to break up the definition of knowledge into three paragraphs body#1 -what is does justifiable mean? -because something is justifiable does that make it true? -what makes something justifiable? -example of something that was "justified" at the time? (very unsure of what to use for this) body#2 -since "truth" is missing from the equa…

Has anyone done a presentation on artificial intelligence/the chinese room argument? I feel very lost and i need some help or feedback on what i currently have in mind Real life situation: Chinese room thought experiment by John Searle Knowledge issue: Who is a knower? Ideas: human vs. computer a computer uses artificial knowledge to manipulate information, so does this mean that a machine can know? a human using a dictionary uses the same tool to get information, by following a set of rules in a dictionary Areas of knowledge dealt with: reason - machines uses reason(?) language - can be applied when translating languages, same word - different meaning It is a very broad…

The question is this: "Discuss the various roles perception and language play in establishing individual and cultural identities. Which way of knowing, perception or language, can bring us closer to the truth about ourselves and others?" The problem is that it's so broad and you don't know where to begin. Our TOK teacher is horrible and gave us the rubric the day before it was due.

This one's a simple question, but can carry a lot of meaning: "Are reason and logic purely objective and universal, or do they vary across cultures?" In respect to all of your guys' cultural background/ origin, to what extent is reason and logic different to those that you have witnessed around you? That is, assuming most of you attend an international school where there is a tendency for culture clash and TCK issues etc. Do you think all reason and logic is purely objective? Or that those two can vary depending on an individual's case of where they are from?

Hey, We have to do a presentation on ETHICS and I'm sorta undecided on the topic. Ideally, I'd do cannabis, to legalize or not, but someone else already did it. So I've though of a few others: Music downloading Gay marriage - California as an example Censorship - on the internet as an example Internet privacy Former Nazi officers - is it morally right to prosecute them today? What do you guys think I should do? Thanks in advance

I'm confused if religion and ethics are two different areas of knowledge or if religion is integrated with ethics. Every post I have read on here seems to say that they are integrated, but in my TOK book they clearly have two different sections under AOK. Is there a new syllabus or what is going on?

I have over 1400 words thus far, but I do have a quote as well. Since I'm just over 1400, I'll add length if it doesn't count. The requirement is 1200-1600, but my teacher told us we ought to have 1400 at least. Sorry if this was in a sticky or something already, I did quick find for word count and didn't see anything, so... yea. Thanks so much for any response.

Hey Guys, So I have my first IB TOK presentation next week and I am not quite sure if I am on the right track to receive the grade that i desire... At the moment my topic is not being able to know the emotion of something without having the experience to match the emotion too. My real life situation at the moment is something along the lines of; it is impossible to know the emotion behind loosing a family member to death, unless you yourself have lost a family member to death. Everyone knows that it is saddening to lose a family member however, unless you have lost a family member you can not know the full extent of the emotion. That is the majority of what I have at the …

I have 2 days to hand in a strucutre of what I have to say (this is not the proposal as I have already gave the real life issue and my teacher liked it so much, he said it would be a great tok presentation). The only problem, is the knowledge issues I will be presenting. I have no idea. My topic will be: Are our civil rights inalienable. The two real life situations will be : 1) US 2nd ammendments - the right for individuals to bear arms. 2) the relase of secret documents by wikileaks My teacher said I could look at the language people used in th…

I've chosen; How can we recognise when we have made progress in the search for knowledge? ; as a title for my ToK essay but it requires me to compare 2 AoK. I want to compare Natural sciences with Religion but it doesn't look like the IBO recognise religion as an AoK. So im trying to think of religion in terms of it's historical context. Would I be allowed to do this? Advice would be much appreciated.

I pose this question: "Do humans possess instincts?" In essence, i'm asking if you believe that humans have accurate knowledge of how to be successful without ever being in a certain situation, or if their environment influences their knowledge. Just taking the mindset that knowledge does exist. So, is it pre-known or learned?

I don't know what we're supposed to learn in TOK, but I'm pretty sure it isn't this. My teacher, who is also the head of the IB program in our school, is going through the history of Western Philosophy with a fine-toothed comb in order to prove to us that Plato and Kant were wrong about everything, free market is the best, and Ayn Rand is a goddess. Now, I'm no socialist, but I find this biased approach unfair. I know IB philosophy is like, "everything is biased!" but he's so blatant about it! So, is this okay? Am I totally wrong? Does anyone else feel like they're being indoctrinated?

Hi all, I need to come up with a TOK presentation idea, and I was thinking that I'd like to do it regarding some of the etiquette customs of Chinese culture, since this is something I'm interested in and have personal connection to. Particularly, I'd like some way to discuss the Chinese concepts of 'mianzi' and 'guanxi' and such, and how they compare with other cultures, and how this may affect how different people in different cultures might 'know' differently. For example, because of this, Chinese people often say 'no' when they mean 'yes', and it is thus up to the listener to implicitly understand what is meant, essentially much of Chinese culture involves knowing what…

Hi, i actually finished writing my TOK essay, until one of my teachers totally scrapped it, saying it was all wrong. Could someone please help me with the above mentioned topic? I was wondering which AOK's i should be focusing on, as in my previously written essay, i haven't concentrated on any AOK's in particular. The examples are from a range of AOKs. Also, could someone help me with a way to go about writing my essay? Thank you. Your help would mean a lot.

I will be doing my ToK presentation soon and I am looking for possible topics. I'm starting to read the novel Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand and I thought it would be fun to do a ToK presentation with something from that novel. I've only just started, so I only know a very brief background of it, so I am not really sure exactly what I could use from the novel for this. From my current knowledge, it seems that I could do something with Capitalism vs. Socialism with the human sciences or ethics (ethics would probably be easiest in my opinion). or maybe with Rand's Objectivism philosophy and its take on reason or morality (though I do not know much about that yet). As I said, …

For our ToK presentation we were going to talk about why our culture (american) is on a constant search on how they can perfect their projected image in order to appease everyone around them as if they have some standard to live up to. We have a few things to discuss about, such as suicide attempts and actual completions (calling them successes sounded too bad) and also how the media portraying the celebrities as perfect individuals (we have entire TV channels dedicated to following the lives of these people...). Aside from physical image we are also discussing how people act and what they say, sort of as if they were changing their personalities in front of certain peopl…

Alright guys, im sure half of all IB kids around the world are suffering and trying to figure out what to write about for journals, so lets post some topics here, some apparently 'deep' ones that teachers would love. here's my input: 'experts aren't always right' also someone in another post mentioned saying 'before [blank] i thought [blank] but now i realize that [blank].. and then elaborate, basically add more words this is actually a really good formula and teacher will think you know what you're talking about.

I wrote my TOK Essay, and I used the Holocaust as an example for my history paragraph. However, my teacher told me its an over-used example and he advised me to change it. I was just wondering if anyone knows of an example in history that is shaped by different cultural beliefs. Like when I used the Holocaust, I said that Nazis had a different opinion on the Holocaust and the non-Nazis had another opinion. So another historical example that is based on cultural and personal circumstances, rather than justified evidence.
