Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

my EE will be in Group1, English. I think I want to write about Sylvia Plath, but I'm not sure. I wanted to write about the language used in her poems... I can't think of a more specific topic... that can actually be an argument.. Does anyone have ideas as to what I can write about concerning her? Or any ideas in general, about group 1 essays? Thank you, your help is extrememly appreciated! -A.

Hey y'all, I'm new to IB survival, so I'm still getting the gist of things here. Anyways, I've chosen my EE title for art: "Is traditional animation still valid in today's society?" Do you think its good enough? Also, don't mean to be a leech here but, do you guys have any resources like books or websites on animation? If you know anything, drop me a note please!

Hi, I am in SERIOUS trouble! I want to do somthing with hair (on the head ) and shampoo. I just don't know exactly WHAT I can investigate. I want to compare a shampoo from the store with a simple self-made shampoo, I just don't know exactly what to compare or how to do that. I am seriously panicking... please, someone suggest possible investigations. I have to hand a plan for investigation already tomorrow!! My chemistry teacher (who is the IB coordinator of my school) is seriously going to kill me if I don't submit a clear plan! :0 Thank you!

Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone had some advise for that can help with my idea for an EE paper. IB is relatively new at our school so it goes without going that the teachers teaching our six areas are not as familiar with the standards so I was looking for some help on my topic. Unfortunately, math is my strongest area but my school has only gone as far as to offer Calculus and I'm unsure if this is a high enough level of math to pass as a good EE paper. My topic is: The mathematical advancement of integrals in calculus to build the concept of solids of revolutions. The only problem is, I don't think this topic is valid as I don't really prove anything. Any …

Well ive written the majority of my physics EE based on a practical I did, and now I need sources and such to stick in the bibliography. I have a few, but does anyone have any tips for finding sources in general, for any subject, Im having the same problem for history coursework and other subjects. Are Internet sources frowned upon alot, and where can I find reliable internet sources?

Alright, so I'm back to the EE (after my IOP and french SL oral), and I've got a new list of possible EE topics! So, I really want to do an EE in chemistry, but right now I'm having quite a but of trouble with finding a good quality question to expand on. I have to do a presentation of my (tentative) essay on May 7, and my (very rough) essay draft is due around June 17. Right now, I'm just having trouble with my question (after switching topics 3 times), and I'm sure once I get it down, making an experiment/writing the essay won't be so terrible. As my school is doing its first year of IB, and I am the only student doing my essay in chemistry, I'm running in the dark righ…

I plan to pursue an ee in biology, naturally. I would like to do something on the bacteria that lives inside cockroaches and termites which enable them to eat wood. And to get loads of readings I plan to find out the optimum temperature for the bacteria to thrive. " sounds rather vague but I like the idea of dissecting cockroaches .So how do I phrase the whole this to make it sound more professional?

Hey guys!! During my revision I was thinking about EE requirements and the grading system. This question is more directed at those who have graduated IB and had their essays marked. How tough are they? I heard that's it's bloody difficult to get an A in the EE and that a lot of candidates last year did quite badly.. I'm really banking on the extra marks to push my grade up as high as possible but looking back at my extended essay which was historically based I can't keep feeling that it was far too narrative.

Well, I really want to do my EE in chemistry (I'm a science buff, neh), but I'm having some trouble deciding whether my possible research questions are too simple. I am the first student doing an Chemistry EE in my school, ever (we just started the IB programme this year, so obviously nobody else has gone through, and everyone dropped the idea of a chem essay). I've had some rough spots so far (such as, my topic was too complicated), and our 'rough draft' of the EE is due before school's out (June of this year). I can't work on it at summer, cause I'm at Shad Valley for a month... and hell like I'm working while I'm there. My possible (very rough) topics are as …

Alright, so I am trying to think of an EE topic, but I am still sketchy about a few things... First, which are usually scored higher, History, or English? I am leaning more towards English right now, merely because I am really passionate about it, and I get along very well with the teacher who I'd choose as my advisor... She's really thorough, and makes sure she knows what you're doing... I really enjoy History too though, and our teacher is very involved in the IB program, and used to mark papers...very capable. Assuming I chose English, I was thinking of comparing Like Water for Chocolate, and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, exploring the confinement of women in each pi…

OK, heres the thing. My EE is coming up and my teacher is recommending that we should start thinking of some topics on what to write. I'm inclining towards the history area, but many people out there says its really really hard because of the background information that has to be done before you can start writing. So i might just well post something and let others critique my idea so I can get a handle of what im trying to do lol MY IDEA: --something on the lines of "Nelson Mandela + him overcoming a long history of racism in south africa + how its unprecedented + etc......" Just started my IB life in January and I've decided to do an EE in Biology. (I take Bio, Chem, Math HL and I figured bio would be easiest for me to get an A) I've been thinking of doing something along the lines of apoptosis in mammalian cells. Perhaps looking at how apoptosis is induced by certain chemicals or the links between metabolism and apoptosis. Would this make a good EE? Will it be hard to carry out? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks

I really want to write my EE in music; however, i know it's really hard to come up with a topic that is specific enough and relates purely to music. Does anyone know if it is frowned upon to write about musical investigation of your own, with reference to other pieces, or even composition? I guess what I'm asking is whether the essay has to be on specific pieces, or if it can be investigative of the elements of music itself? I hope some of that made sense...but there's always math if all else fails. =]

Well, i looked for something on this topic but couldn't find anything that explained what I'm about to ask, so if there is a topic, apologies. =) Through the course of your extended essay, how important is to have citations all the way through? Because though my bibliography has quite a reasonable amount of research, through the essay, there aren't many citations. A lot of what I've mentioned is from books, however, none of it is lifted. Some of it is the kind of thing that must commonly be mentioned when discussing the book i'm doing mine on. I don't know whether ideas that are strictly in your own words, but the basis of which may be from books, should be cited? Also, i…

Extended Essay - CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien

Ok, so my research question is: To what extent are CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien alike in their writings (more specifically in LOTR and the Chronicles of Narnia) in relation to their friendship? What caused them to write so differently? I have written over 3000 words on this essay, and i have way too much bibliographical information. To me, a lot of the bibliographical information is very important to explaining why they are alike and different. However, i also know that this is an English A1 exam and that i need to be comparing them in a literary sense. I was planning to cover comparing: age group aims, mood/tone, allegorical contexts and references, and relgious content... …
