pepsitwist28 - what topic within Psych are you doing?

I did my Essay on the treatment options for AN, and I might be able to help with structuring the Essay, and knowing where to start.

CNguyen90 - so you're thinking you want to do the Essay in Psych?

It might be a good revision tool for you to do your Essay in one of your subjects that is under the "daze" category. This is because doing the EE is like becoming a specialist on a small area of one subject. With psych you become good at quickly gathering information from huge amounts of text, analyzing it, and coming up with a response. While this is a tool necessary for nearly every subject within the IB, it's also useful for any higher education that you undertake. As it sounds like you're already going to do well in psychology, why not do it in Language A1? You could, for example, look at one of the School's Choice texts, of one of the Option texts that your school has chosen. Knowing these texts is likely to help with your final LA1 score.

If, however, you are sure that you want to write a psych EE, here are some ideas:

1. Think of a topic that interests you, and on which there is a lot of research. Examples include the relationship between stress and a certain factor in the environment, links between cannabis use and schizophrenia, the success of various treatments for disorders, how the _______ perspective has influenced the study of ______ disorder/dysfunction ...

2. <<Google Scholar>> key words relating to this topic to make sure that there will be enough resources.

Put these into your bibliography! Make sure that YOU can access them again, and know exactly what they were about just from looking at the bibliography - this will be a heaven send when you are writing the drafts.

3. Check that your topic is a REVIEW, rather than an expression of a subjective experience. Many students are interested in dysfunctional behavior and mental disorders, and an essay on this topic must be a review of existing literature, rather than an exploration of how / what the disorder is, how / what it is to experience the disorder and so on. If there are studies on, for example, "the impact of ____ disorder on ____ activity (eg work productivity)" then that should be fine.

4. Head to the local library and do a catalog search, and check out at least 5, and hopefully over 10 books/texts on your topic.

5. Read the texts/books/studies that you have found in both the library and on the internet. Are you still interested in the same topic? Can you refine the topic further? Would you like to shift the focus of the Essay slightly?

NOW you are ready for the first meeting with your supervisor!

It sounds like a lot, but it will save a lot of time, hassle and stress later.
