I've been reading a few topics and I must say, I'm a little worried. Does anyone know for sure whether articles from the Economist are frowned upon? Apparently they're already too 'explained' and so our work will be too much of a rip-off. thanks for your help.

Dear All, Can anyone of you please let me know if the research question seems fine to you? Should Company X expand business in Singapore for oral care products? If you think the question is OK, then please let me know how an investment appraisal can be done using NPV analysis using fictitious data. Thanks, Nattu

alright so last year as i had to go in for Ib forecasting (talking with the coordinator about what subjects i would choose) i was informed that to take economics you had to be in Math Sl or Hl, not math studies. Now at the time it didn't really bother me because i knew i would at least try math Sl. I just kinda found it odd that 1) 1 girl last year took physics and math studies at the same time and i'm pretty sure physics is a lot more demanding mathematics wise and 2) that when i looked up the economics outline on ibo.org i couldn't find anything on having to take Math SL to take economics. i wanted to talk to my coordinator about this because last year the head of th…

Hi guys, I'm currently working on IA2 for econs and I'm basing my commentary on the negative externalities due to overconsumption of alcohol. The article says that minimum pricing can be used as a policy to curb this negative externality by reducing consumption levels. Although this may sound perfectly logical, I haven't seen any textbooks mentioning price floors to be a policy to reduce negative externalities due to consumption. The textbooks that I have browsed through only mentions implementing taxes when it comes to price-related policies so I'm a little worried about putting minimum pricing as a policy down in my commentary. May I know what do you guys think? Is it a…

Hi there, to my extended, I got a big question mark when I started to think about if a car is an inelastic good, or elastic? what would u say? and why? In addition is a car a normal or inferior good? I think in general cars are inelastic, but when only looking at cars (disregarding other goods) they are elastic, there are petrol, diesel, biogas, natural gas cars etc...

The Demand curve is said to be perfectly inelastic in perfect competition, But if firms lower their prices wont demand increase? Q3. Why does the marginal cost curve cross the average cost curve at its lowest point? Thanks alot of your help

I recently wrote a commentary on bonds in the UK, but I am not satisfied with the outcome. The commentary went more into finance than economics, which is why I have decided to write a new one. Have you read any interesting articles on the subject? I am having difficulties finding a suitable one. Thanks in advance.

I know that in the IAs you have to count the diagram labels and titles as part of the word count but is that included when writing the IA coversheet? So if my commentary is 730 words, and the labels and titles are another 14, do i write 730 words for word count or 744 words? Thanks

Hey guys I could use some help with my BaM IA research question. I recently turned in my draft and when i got it back the teacher all of a sudden tells me that my research question isn't good enough, so now I'm sitting here with all this research that I've done and my essay and in need of changing my research question... the research question needs to be changed so that it is better phrased but doesn't result in me having to change my entire essay. My previous RQ was: How can Expat Auctions attract more customers to its auctions? Some new ones that i've come up with are: - What would be appropriate marketing channels for Expat Auctions? - How can Expat Auctions improve …

Is it possible to use acronyms in Econ IAs if we have made it specific earlier on? So for example; Average Price Level (APL) and then after that just using APL whenever you want to say Average Price Level? Would we be marked down for this?

I have an IA due on monday and was wondering somethings. 1-What does it mean by candidate number on the coversheet and how do I know what this number is? (teacher never explained this) 2-For the word count, does the coversheet count as part of the 750 words? And how about any labels in the graphs? (such as "P1", "EQ1", etc) 3-For each part of the IA do we label them? (f.e. Analysis: or Evaluation:) 4-I just want to make sure that I am doing each section of the IA correctly...for one part (economic terminology) we simply define the economic terms that we are going to use in the IA. For Economic analysis we relate these economic terms to the article. (my understanding i…

Ok so I'm writing my 3rd IA for Eco. I found an article but I think it may be a bit too simple, have been looking for hours and cant find a good article for Unemployment. Could someone please help me find a good article? Here's the article I found: Grim jobless figures again in Spain 04/10/2011 The end of the summer tourist season saw the number of people registering as unemployed in Spain shoot up by a more than expected 96,000 in September. The Latest Labour Ministry figures dampened hopes of a fall in the unemployment rate in the third quarter of the year. There are now 4.23 million Spaniards out of work and the jobless rate there is more than double the European Un…

I found an article that will make the short term aggregate supply shift backwards because of the weather in Mexico. Some oil rigs will be closed. I want some points to discuss in my commentary. What definitions beside SRAS should I define. Like what are my evaluations will be... short term, vs long term Stakeholders is easy but any points will be appreciated. And it will be closed for couple of weeks. So do I have to discuss LRAS How would you layout your commentary for something like this. Any help or advice will be appreciated.

While spacing out on my Economics notes, a curious question came to me: If the Long Run time period is a time for which all factors of production can be varied, does this mean all Supply curves are theoretically elastic in this time frame regardless of their short term elasticity? Hello! My economics teacher is quite honestly useless at explaining the theory behind his diagrams. He just draws emm up and expects us to comprehend them intuitively. Being a little behind the curb I'm always a little behind Was wondering... I don't quite understanding the reasoning behind the fact that elasticities vary along a linear demand curve. (Infinite at the top. 1 in the middle. less than 1 and bigger than zero at the bottom lest i misremember?) Does anybody have a reasonable explanation for this!? I could just remember this information But I really cannot grasp WHY it is this way. It's eating me up.

Hey guys, I had a little debate with my Business and Management teacher about how much time should be spent on studying the IB case study (that is the subject for paper 1). I thought that you were meant to spend about half a year just on analysing it, while she said that no time is meant to be spent on it and we were meant to prepare for paper 1 by ourselves. Could you help me clarify this? How much time should be spent on the case study for paper 1? Is there any part in the syllabus where this is mentioned? I realise this is a complicated topic, so any help would be welcome, Thanks so much

I'm currently in SL Economics, and am looking for a good book that will help me understand the concepts taught in class, as well as prepare me for the exam. On Amazon, I found these two to be the most promising looking: http://www.amazon.ca/IB-Diploma-Programme-Economics-Companion/dp/0199151245/ref=pd_sim_b_11 http://www.amazon.ca/Economics-IB-Diploma-Study-Guide/dp/0199152284/ref=pd_sim_b_18 Anyone have experience with either of these? What's the difference between them? Which one's better? Thanks in advance.

so in the commentary... you need to define terms, draw diagram, analyse the concepts and theories, evaluate ways to solve the problem, etc... but for the evaluation part, how many solutions have to be presented? say the article didn't suggest any solution, so how many ones do I have to come up with? should I do many (like 3 or 4) but with less analysis for each solution, or should I do less (like 1 or 2) but with more analysis for each solution?

In my experience in IB so far (entering my second year), I have had some trouble with accepting the mark schemes for economics. In every test I have taken the mark scheme for the essay questions always state "students may answer differently; award marks accordingly" and so I think "hey! What a great opportunity to put some real thought into a question" but it turns out that teachers always look for a specific answer, and if you asnwer differently you get punished for it. For example, in one of my essays I had to discuss in which cases are merit goods underprovided and how to solve this problem. I answered the question using some macro theory and examples of LDCs, MDCs, NI…
