I'm going to take IB next year and right now everyone is contemplating on the decision between IB English A1.1 or A1.2... Basically everyone is basing their decision on their personal sentiments ('Creative writing for A1.2', 'Essay writing/escaping from creative writing for A1.1') and I have no idea on which to choose. Could anyone help? Unrelated question - exactly how hard is IB English? I've heard some people say that it is extremely difficult (I'm planning to take it as HL next year.) while other people dismiss it as the 'easiest subject in IB, along with the likes of Psychology'.

I've decided to do my IOP on the Crucible. My focus will be on how the dangers of intolerance in society is represented. in this i will talk about symbols, causes-and-effects of intolerance on society and the author's main message/purpose in writing this play. The stuff I think I should include is theocracy, Danforth, the Court, hysteria ,setting etc. Any other ideas or ideas helping the one's i have so far? Thank you! Andy

Okay, I decided to do a practice IOC today, and I utterly failed haha. I only spoke for about 9 minutes and that was very slowly. I'm not exactly sure what I am supposed to talk about for literature. When I practiced, I was looking for tone and diction...and that was it. I don't know any other literary devices. And honestly I don't really understand what diction really is. I also kept repeating my ideas a lot and they weren't really deep. How do I practice making more insightful ideas for my IOC? Also, what does it mean to have a general idea of what the text is, and how would I incorporate that into my IOC? What is structure and would I have to look for it in literature…

I have an in-class oral for english and i was given the topic colour in The Outsider (The Stranger) by Camus. I thought maybe it could be about how the colours white, black and red are used to emphasize his lack of emotional attachment, however i am still really confused anyone got any ideas to help?

Hi everyone. Ok so I'm a little bit worried about my 1 HL english A1 paper 1. How do you make sure you don't misinterpret the text!? I'm usually a poetry girl and don't have many problems analysing for techniques etc. but I'm so worried I'm going to misinterpret the whole thing!!!!! How do I make sure this doesn't happen!? Also, my essay writing isn't as I'd like it to be... so how do I write more sophisticated? I usually like to write everything plain and clear so that I make sure the examiner understands my point. I read HEAPS, (when I have time), but somehow my vocabulary and syntax/explaining methods for essay's isn't very sophisticated. Thanks heaps! pearbabe.

I have an idea for my IOP which is due in about three weeks (or more, I'm not exactly sure). Basically, I would be discussing Imagination vs. Reality and concentrate on Briony because she is the one character that could have the most reference in the books with this theme. My problem is, is this topic good enough for IOP? Or should I do something else but then on the same book seeing as I find it fairly easy (most of my class is doing it on this book). I'm just struggling a little bit. And I mean if I do choose this topic, I still have to figure out how and what to say. Maybe someone has any better ideas for a topic on 'Atonement'? Million thanks

My fellow IBers... it's that time of the year which we've all come to loath and love, the IOP. My presentation is on the presentation of Redemption throughout Pat Barker's Regeneration, so I'm asking if anyone could please help me out with the following: 1) I need a song about the theme I'm presenting about (Redemption) 2) What should I include in my keynote for the best possible score (I'm aiming for that 7!) 3) Would it be good to refer to other views on Redemption (and how to achieve it) 4) Should I include videos in my Keynote? Thanks in advance and may everyone have the best of luck with their own IOPs. - Miran

Okay well, we've started world lit, and we're focusing on Therese Raquin by Emile Zola. My topic was given by my teacher because this is a practice and we are to present our work as we would in IOP. I've already done my IOP, so I think I know the format but, the topic is the Second French Empire and i dont see any connection with the novel we're studying. There are no connections at all, and I don't know how to begin this. Also I'm lost as to how I will merge this research topic with my world lit. I need some clues from experienced people thank you!

Hey this is my first time here so I'm sorry if I mess up any sort of procedure or regularity. ><;; So right now we're working on WL2 and I was planning to do 2b for the book The Assault by Harry Mulisch. Any suggestions for a creative piece? I'm kinda stuck as this was the hardest text for me to understand as well as the only choice I have for my WL2. Again I don't need exact details or anything, just some ideas since the one I was planning to do turned out not being in the IB guidelines. Part of my Proposal: I plan to use the following text(s): The Assault by Harry Mulisch My broad topic (subject matter) will be: Memory The aspect(s)/technique(s) that most clearly …

Dipen -- I'm not sure if that's a great idea. It sounds super interesting, but our advisor (he's also the IB coordinator) gave us some literature, which said do NOT do anything anthropological or psychological because the IB tends to mark that down as it becomes less of a literary examination. That said, don't take my work for it as I'm asking for advise on my topic as well. I want to write on Perfume by Suskind and Assualt by Mulisch. Throughout the novels, Suskind's Perfume and Mulisch's Assualt, the authors use characterization to cause the protangonist to have the epiphany of the intertwinment of good and evil. I'm not sure if that argues enough of a point of it is …

I have a clear idea of what my WL1 is about. I already have the draft written and now I just have to go over it with the comments that my teacher gave me and improve it. My essay is on 'Metamorphosis' by Kafka and 'Waiting for Godot' by Samuel Beckett. It is a comparative study between the two and the element of truth in both. Now, as I'm going over it, I'm really stuck with defining my purpose and what exactly I'm doing in my essay. Like, I know what I'm doing but I just can't make a thesis out of it. HELP?? Really confused right now :/

I take Georgian Self-Taught A1 Standard Level. I have my IOC and IOP next week but where can I find the rubrics/criteria for it? Regular A1 languages cannot have the same rubric, given that there you are given a passage which you then make a commentary for while in self-taught you have to bring your own passage and they give you a question to answer. Any ideas?

So I've gotten my first draft back, and my teacher gave comments (the harder part for me is that we had to switch teachers, my previous one left) and so her comments, while it was written clearly, still baffled me, as if I can't pin point which part of my essay has the real flaw in it. So I'll be needing help on making it better, and if anyone has the time to read my draft and comment on it is also welcome: She says that I should get a better understanding of the spiritual ideas of the novel Siddhartha, and comment on the style of writing (I don't know how and where to insert it into my WL) and then I need to mention the Gree gods at the beginning of commenting on Oedipu…

Hello everyone, I am doing my IOP this Monday so I only have a few days to practice. My topic is "An analysis of the constructed realities and personas in The Great Gatsby (and how they add to Fitzgerald's message)." So far I have analyzed these aspects for Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby, and I plan to say a little something about Myrtle. My overall idea is that the constructed realities and personas of these characters show that American high society draws people in with the lure of money, power, and status, and corrupts them, leading them to present themselves in deceitful ways and causing them to act for superficial and selfish gains. Would it be a good idea for me to say th…

Hi everyone, I just have a quick question regarding the WL2. I believe there are three ways to do it right? Either a creative piece, a comparative piece or a detailed study of one work. What would you recommend? Because I was actually leaning towards the creative piece, however my teacher said that many people underestimate it and its actually quite difficult. However I actually do not feel like doing another boring comparative piece. What do you think? Thank you!

I've read it and I get the general themes and ideas that Orwell is conveying through his stylistic devices but I can't help but wonder if there are any subtler, profound topics that I might be able to explore? Any suggestions are welcome!

Hello fellow IB students! ^^ Lately, I have been talking to myself to practice for the orals. Then a few days ago, I practiced with a group of people. However, what we found is that we have a tendency to say something like: (King Lear) The imagery of the hurricanes, thunderbolts, fire [talk about their literary effects...then:] ..."which reflects Lear's fury" [Comment about his diction] ..."again, it shows that Lear is furious, enraged, etc" [more literary features] ..."which again demonstrate how Lear is furious" I know we have to refer back to the thesis from time to time but it feels very repetitive the way we're doing it. I'm not sure if my example makes sense (or…

Hey guys, My teacher set my class a 1000 word essay on minor characters but with no specific topic. I was thinking of writing one about Haemon and how his refusal to listen to his father was against the Ancient Greek tradition, but i can't think of a what i would write on the another character. We have really only looked at Creon and Antigone so far, but do you have any ideas on what i could write on the Chorus or their leader, as I could look at the chroruses songs, or the leaders interaction with Creon. Thanks in advance

Description given by teacher... Analysis of two key passages: two significant passages from the same work could be selected in order to explore, for example, contrasting prose styles, descriptive method, character presentation and a range of other aspects. The candidate needs to justify briefly the pivotal nature of the passages chosen and to demonstrate their particular similarties and differences which the candidate considers interesting So, how should I structure this? Like one of a comparative essay? I'm thinking about writing it on the idea of how the change in character presentation of Esteban Trueba through the description of three marias and the big house on the c…

I'm a bit startled at how my teacher has graded my past papers' conclusions and I can't think of how to improve them. Most of them reiterate the thesis, summarize the paper, and then end with a goody-two-shoes ending ("the world is wrong and it's one's job to promote goodness" type of sentences). How does one end a WL1 paper, one that previously has been centered around 2 characters from 2 different novels?
