I was wondering how the IB music course was like. I'm not really worried about the theory or the performance, however more on the analysis. How are you guys finding music? Would it be a harder subject out of the ones your currently doing? Also should I do biology or music? As in which one is easier for you guys. Just wanting to see what other people think. Plus, with music, is it really hard to keep up with your practise time and also with homework in your other subjects? Cos I know some people practise a lot for their performances.. What's HL like?? Is it much harder? Also how hard is it to get a 7? I mean, music is a subject where everyone might think differently abou…

So I have this list of terminology for music, and I tried my hardest to define them... Thought I'd share it with you guys And Quid Pro Quo (haha my first use of that term) you guys can find any corrections and maybe add some words? HERE IT IS: DYNAMICS - Dynamic Swells : Swells in little crescendo’s and diminuendo’s - Terrace Dynamics : Different sections (like rice fields) (sudden changes in dynamics, often achieved by adding and subtracting the number of instruments) - Large Dynamic Contrast : Very Soft, or Very Loud - Fortissimo : Very Loud - Forte : Loud - Diminuendo : Gradually getting Softer - Crescendo : gradually getting louder MELODY - Counter Melody : Melody b…

The people who does music- how hard is music analysis??? ive heard comments that you cant really prepare for them, as u just listen to the music and analyze... and that totally freaks me out!!! is it actually hard to get a high mark on? people say that it is really ambiguous, so you never know what result you'll get? is that true? im doing the course next year, but how much do u actually have to know to do the course? im alright with performing and composition... but i pretty much know nothing about music history at the moment, and not too good at theory... do i actually have to know stuff at this stage or will they actually teach it next year?? im so worried! coz im ai…

I noticed there wasn't a thread for this, and I'm taking it this year for IB (I start classes officially in around a weeks time, after camp, so I'm not sure what to expect at all or how it would be graded or how to well, do well in it. I also can't really find anything online.. SO basically I was wondering if anyone had taken it/is taking it and how they like it? What exactly do you do? and are there exams at the end of the year for it, or all just internal stuff?

The research investigation for IB theatre asks to choose an unfamiliar theatre practice and choose a play that has a relation to your chosen theatre practice. I want to choose American Burlesque (it is an approved topic by the IBO) and I've been doing crazy research trying to find plays. All I find are American Burlesque MUSICALS and no non-musicals. My teacher suggested we DO NOT do musicals because she does not believe there is enough text in it to work off of. But she does not know for sure. So my question is, has anyone chose or done a musical for the research investigation? Did it work?

Because it's more of a summary website that links all different sources together. That's why there are references at the bottom. What do the examiners say about this? Sorry if it seems that I'm asking a million - okay, two! - questions about sources... my main problem area at the moment haha.

So i have a topic and areas to research for: The practice of Kathakali. But when i went to start writing it i was confused as to how much of my own words to use and how much sourced material to use. Can i just say something like: (The practice of Kathakali originated from...) without it being from a book or website? See what i mean?

IM SO SORRY THIS IS A REPOST, I DIDNT KNOW WHERE TO PUT IT! The begining of October, my art teacher assigned a practice IB project to help us decide what is and isnt working with our theme and what we need to change and adjust. Problem is, i JUST found something that interestes me as a theme about a week ago. Our project is due this Wednesday. I love old cameras and i have a huge collection (mostly of old Polaroids). As my theme, i wanted to do the "evolution of photography and cameras" and to make it more general i was going to do something with the 20th century. My art teacher thought 20th century was too broad so i said i would just try the evolution of photography and…

So, my Visual Arts teacher has gone down on my IB class a bit harder this year, since there's only four of us left and as a result I feel like my inspiration's just gone. She's really pushing the need for us to connect our work to the culture around us, and other external influences, and the focus on research instead of studio work is really affecting my marks. Does anyone else have issues like this, and what do you do about it?

I was wondering if, for IB Music HL, we are allowed to arrange a piece as one of our compositions. Is that allowed? Our teacher isn't very forthcoming with this kind of information. That and she has a tendency to make mistakes in reference to what you can and can't do for IB. Also, my friend wanted to set a poem by Poe to music, but he's not sure if that's allowed.

I am not sure if this is a common thing in IB Music, but we have to do listening journals, where we basically analyze a song that we listen to. We are supposed to choose diverse types of music and different songs. My problem is, I constantly gravitate back toward hugely popular piano pieces, and so I don't get any variation in genre or medium or time period. Does anyone have any ideas for pieces I may use for these listening journals? I am just not very familiar with how to go about finding random music to listen to.

I'm in my final year of IB Art at HL, and my chosen theme is Witchcraft, which began great but I'm running out of ideas... I produced 2 large size paintings of tarot cards, a with costume in collaboration with a ballgown, and I'm currently working on a painting related to witch hunting and isolation. Do any of you have some others ideas?

I was just looking up some songs for classical guitar which I might want to try to perform for my HL music class. My teacher recommended that I look at the ABRMS syllabuses for guitar grades 7-8 and my mind was blown. I have been playing classical guitar for 6 years and I have never done any of the ABRMS exams. These songs make me extremely worried at best because they are far out of my skill level. The question I would like to ask is, is this really the level that is expected of me in the IB? The reason my teacher directed me toward grade 7-8 is because he wanted me to be able to show all of my capabilities while playing a song, but I think he heavily overestimates me. I…

I'm just wondering what my fellow IB Dancers are doing all around the world. c: I am a first year IB dancer; my school was chosen as a pilot for the IB Dance program several years back. Right now we're working with a professional dance company, focusing on a segment of Jose Limon's. This dance company is also reviewing ballet and modern dance with us. We've also been reviewing a dance that second years choreographed that will be performed in front of the entire school in about a month. How have you all been managing it? I find that it's one of my hardest classes. The journal entries are what give me trouble.

I've already decided for my RI I will focus on Bunraku (puppet theater) but I'm having trouble narrowing down a play to form my research question on. I'm leaning towards the Battles of Coxinga since it has historical background. What other criteria should I look for in a play before deciding on it and how should I formulate my research question? I'm not saying to make one for me but what exactly should I be asking? Examples please?

So my music teacher wants an outline of our MI tomorrow. and he's not being very helpful as this is the first year of IB music..... And I have no idea where to start. I don't know what i want to do. I want to do something either with Alex Mitchell (www.alexmitchell.org) or Mark Wood (www.woodviolins.com , www.markwoodmusic.com) If i do Alex, it's gonna be struggle compared with like, russian sailors dance. they're both like, minor. struggle sounds russian; it has that heavy sound and I think it's in a minor key. Russian Sailor's dance, of course it's russian and has that heavy sound, but i'm not sure those can be used as links. If i do Mark Wood, then i'd compare Sawdust…

What are your guidelines on creating your IW pages? I just simply follow: *Inspiration (research on artist with analysis and critics) *Trial & Error (Mediums, technique, composition etc.) *Progress of Final Art Work *Analysis and Critique on Work These should all come to about 10 - 12 pages I guess. Share Oh and of course any museum trips with pictures and notes. That always adds tons of pages!

Okay... so I'm sure anyone who is doing IB Art will know that we have to list all the sources of the images or information that we put in our sketchbooks. The thing is... I thought it would look neater to list them in the back as you would do with a proper biography or something. And when I started doing this I did ask one of the art teachers, who said that would be fine. But when I had a "meeting" with the Head of Art (who wanted to see if we were all on track and everything) she didn't get it. First thing: she didn't even notice I had put the sources in the back, because I hadn't said anything at the beginning. The only thing linking them to the sources were the little …

I'm good at art, it's my talent and my teacher knows and respects this. However, she seems to think that because my pieces are smaller, aka not the width of a door or larger, they lack sophistication required for me to do well. She says my concepts are absolutely brilliant but my pieces don't measure up. Needless to say, this is bothers me A LOT. I don't understand why a piece that is of lesser quality deserves a greater score even though I work longer on mine and they are more visually pleasing. Have any of you had this problem before or know how the judges feel about smaller art? I don't want to change my style or my whole exhibit plan and I'm unsure what to do.

All I know is that you will be interviewed by anonymous person. I don't know what he/she is going to ask me and what I should know and neither does my teacher. Also, how does one exactly get a seven for it? I'd think that an artwork's 'grade' is dependent on the person judging. I chose Option A, where 75% artwork, 25% folio, or something like that. What I think I must know is that I need to talk about cultural influences, my theme, meaning behind my artwork etc. Do you have any tips for me? how does one approach the interview? Many thanks in advance.

Ok, so our crappy teacher just quite because she decided she didn't like the Ib course. So, now I'm in the middle of my last year, and I haven't done a single art piece and I kind of feel like crying every time I think about what theme to pick. Does anyone have any advice of what to do? How to begin? Where to start? What to put most effort in? What techniques to use? How to show your process in your IWB? What are the deadlines at your school? How many art pieces do you recommend to have done the first term of IB3? And about how many pages in the IWB? Extremely thankful for any advice, and help with a theme. I was thinking of choosing clouds as my theme but couldn't …

What is supposed to be inside of it? I feel as if mine cannot compare to those I've seen of other art students, whose IWBs are filled with color and drawings. Mine contains pictures, nice titles, and a lot of information written. How am I supposed to incorporate all of that into a IWB to present to the IB examiner? I feel very lost and insecure about my decision to take Visual Arts just because I don't understand the IWB to its full extent.

This is my second year and I've been really worried about this subject cause my teacher was new to IB last year and still doesn't know so many things about IB VA. I didn't even know that HL students have to do 12-18 projects. What are those projects about anyways? My school started IB last year and there're only two students in VA class including me. I really need help from people who took this subject!! Also, I made so many works that were just copied from pictures I picked from online. My teacher didn't stop me copying and this is being a big problem for me now, because they are certainly not considered as creative works and I cannot put them at the final exhibition! W…

Hi, I'm vola, and I'm an alcoholic new to IB Survival. I used to be on ibscrewed before spambots ate it. On a lark I decided to visit the site, see what's become of it, and it now links to here. Having just completed IB (with a respectable 33 points), I felt like I should join to see what advice and experience I can offer to newblets joining the ranks of the damned IB. So, scrolling through this particular part of the forum, I noticed no one seems to be taking film studies. I did, and I came out of it with a 5 and an intense hatred of being in production. Now I'm curious. If anyone is taking film, come out of the woodwork! Let's compare notes. I wanna know what it's like …

I take Music HL and my school uses Listening to Music by Craig Wright. Unfortunately, I don't think the book really helps me in doing music analysis. All it does is introduce what the four music periods are. It is good to know more about each period, but the book doesn't really give a lot of good examples. I understand what the book says, but when it comes to doing music analysis, I don't know how to apply the knowledge/recognise the stuff on the scores. I don't believe this!! I never even knew there was such a thing as IB Music!!!! I live at the end of the world, where we are deprived of such brilliance, but by some act of God, an IB was developed. However, I'd much prefer to use my computer as a musical instrument. Now the official guideline says: My current plan would be that I'd hook up certain MIDI controllers to my computer and mix and perform my music. I would use my own prerecorded loops and samples + play some parts of the songs in as I go along. I usually do this and gotten quite good at improvising with different styles music. Did anyone else ever perform using music technology? Would this be acceptable to the graders or should I perform on …
