Do you think doing a RI on Beijing Opera, Mulan is too risky of being "familiar"? I never saw a Beijing Opera. I'm thinking of doing a topic on either makeup or costumes Also, does anyone know a good website to use for this topic??

Ok so my IPP and Oral are done forever but now my RI is approaching and I have no idea what to do. I wasn't sure what areas we could do... suggestions please! Is Vaudeville or Cabaret an option? Or is that too Brechtian (and therefore within the course)?

Hi guys! I'm going to choose my subjects and I have thought about choosing Theatre arts. I really wonder what it's like! Is it much work? Do you like it...? What do you actually do...? How is the exam? Do you recommend choosing this at HL (instead of B&M, ITGS or biology)? Thanks!!

My teacher says that visual arts HLB is mostly frowned upon in the Americas, but my workbook has so much better quality than my studio works. I can't draw worth crap. But is HLB a good idea? My teacher is pretty close-minded when it comes to art. Is HLB as frowned upon as I am led to believe???

Hi! So basically, I failed my diploma because I got a 2 in HL math. I recently decided that I don't NEED HL math for anything I want to do later, so I would like to refrain from retaking it because I doubt I'd get higher than a four. However I have been considering Art as a future focus... But I took art SL, so does anyone know if it's possible to retake the art exam in HL? (and then I'd just retake math studies instead of HL) I've been trying to reach my art teacher but he's out of the country. Congrats to everyone who passed!

I don't have the actual paper with this information in front of me and I can't find it online (I think it's only available to educators), but I would like to see if anyone knows this for sure. Is the actual IB music course (as in, classroom, for credit) required in order to take the exam, or can you take the exam based on a music background and completion of the IA. My school, due to budget cuts has had to change its schedule from eight periods down to six, which has made it very difficult for IB students this year. Currently I'm a junior and there are a group of people in my grade who are taking IB music as their sixth subject this year. The problem is that they woul…

Grade 5 Art students at Western Academy of Beijing explored the concept of making connections with the community and environment through a series of installations designed to highlight the amount of waste that is produced as a result of a "throw away society." Inspired by the art work of Australian artist John Dahlsen students created environmental totems with found 'junk' collected from school families. Students worked in groups to identify a message they wanted their totems to convey and then set about expressing those ideas visually. Each group needed to create a mission statement to guide their designs. Below are some of the student's mission statements. "We want …

Hey everyone. My exam is tomorrow for visual arts, and I'm a little nervous. I'm HL so it's 40-45 minutes long, and that seems like a long time to be talking. I've already set up my display the way I want it, and I know generally what I can/will say for each piece. I'm pretty confident in my portfolio, but I'm still nervous. Does anybody have any tips? If you've already had an exam, how did yours go? What types of questions should I specifically be prepared for? How should I balance talking about technique, influences, and symbolism to my theme? Any types of tips, advice, or encouragement would be hugely appreciated! Thanks!

So I've been working on my research investigation for HL and I think my teacher may have led me down the wrong path. She told us that we had to do our RI on a directorial, design, or actor perspective. I was looking at some of the comments on here to make sure I had the correct formatting, but in one comment it said that it can't be directorial. My tradition is Kyogen and my play is Busu. My original question was: How would Busu be directed in traditional Kyogen? Now, I think I need help redoing it. I'm thinking of doing set design or how Taro Kaja would act. Please help me. It's due by Monday and I thought I was doing it correctly.

Hey guys, I was wondering what you do about photographies and videos? I read in the Candidate Record Booklet that you are suppose to add in contact sheets in the description of section 4; "If you have opted for photography as part or all of your studio exhibition or presentation, you must provide evidence in the record booklet of the total amount of work undertaken." Does that mean one series of photographs is one studio work, and that serie should be represented by a contact sheet within section 4? (section 4 is studio work, section 5 is Investigation Book) (Should I add a cd with my video or just stills?) Hope you know how to do this properly, cause my teacher has neve…

I'm scared coz I only have half of my peices complete but excited that art will be OVER soon. All my previous peices really suck. But I tried my best on each and every one of them. Should I redo all the older peices and improve them? Or should I leave them as they are to have evidence of development? You can see my development just by reading my IWB but I need to know what will achieve the higher mark.

So I basically have no clue what my research question is. I know that I want to focus on costuming and do something with Comedy of Manners. Is that even plausible? I really have no idea because my teacher really sucks. Could I use the play "The Misanthrope" by Moliere and just do like two characters and how I would do costuming? Is that enough for an entire research investigation? Someone please help me!!

Hi, Just wondering if somebody could help me, I have a completly dud art teacher that doesn't actually teach us anything. My studio work is pretty strong but I've got no real idea of how to write a good investigation into an artist, art style or theme. If anybody has any suggestions they would be much appreciated. My theme is narrative art, pretty broad but it's working so far, and I'm fairly traditionalist in my mediums. Old school black and white photography with film is my favourite. Thanks Heaps!

Hey everyone! I found this really useful guide for the RWB, here's the link: http://www.shelleydeck.com/teacher/IBART2NDYEAR.htm you can find the file for download on the left hand side of the page - there's a link called "IB Art Handbook" - it's the third link. I found this handbook really useful, especially when getting started. There's a step by step guide for analyzing art work and and art terminoligy glossary. Even if you don't use it in the end, it's worth a look I'm also attaching it to this post, in case you don't trust links (I wouldn't trust links either ) Enjoy, and good luck to all of us!! How beneficial is IB Music to the prospective music major? Do you think you are at a major advantage as opposed to those music majors who haven't taken IB Music? Please tell me what the class is like - I'm so desperate to hear about the class because I wish I were taking another music class besides choir.

I know it's quite early to be deciding specific subject areas, as I am in my second year of pre-IB and sophomore year of high school. However, I am curious as to what courses seem most popular for the sixth subject? I was planning on taking Visual Art (not sure as to whether take SL or HL, because HL eliminates two of my four electives for senior year) or Social Anthropology (I plan to go into psychology). I believe my school offers the previously mentioned, as well as Music and Physics.

Hello im taking Visual Art SL (option B) I've been always wondering what is more important between "hardworking" and "talent" for Visual Art. I do not have good artistic technique and actually my studio works look kind of childish compared to that of other students. But I'm enthusiastic about the subject.. so I try to do well on My IWB and my teacher say I would get good grade for it. But Im really worried about my studio works because they are not good:(( The media I use are also very basic staff (like acrylic on styrofoam, charcoal, pastel, manipulated photography) could you please give me some advice or opinion ??

Hello everyone! In the IPP, I have chosen to do Option A: Devising Practice. For this option, it said that I must be a director or a theatre maker and "make up" a performance of my choice. Well for this, I am devising a scene from the play, Road by Jim Cartwright, while applying both Cruel and Epic Theatrical techniques and style for my very own rendition. My question is: Does this mean that I have to write about ALL the aspects of theatre making (lighting, sound effects, set design, make up, costumes etc.) I have implemented for this scene? [Yes, I am incorporating both theory and research.] Thank you very much for your time. Have a good day.

I tend to enjoy the research aspect much more and I'd rather spend more time on that. On top of that, I don't have much time until my exams this April (or is it May?) and I still haven't got a single peice I'd like to include in my final exam. If I want to get efficient work done I'll have to consider using the easiest mediums/medias to work with. Things like clay and paints would probably be too time consuming. Just some opinions would be nice...

Hello, I am a junior currently in DP in South Texas. Last year, I discovered that the IBO offered IB Music as a course. When I found the 40-page IB Music syllabus online, I was very intrigued by what the course offered, naturally, since I am a music student. From what I've read from multiple syllabuses online, a Musical Investigation is required by IB for both HL and SL students. I was really interested in the MI, and I actually want to do one myself, and also even begin a portfolio of my own compositions - since I plan to major in music at university. Questions: Do you think a Musical Investigation wuuld be a good start to do an Extended Essay in Music? I'm very much in…

Hey everybody. I'm an IB HL Film Student at an international school in Mumbai, INDIA. I have to make a 7 minute movie as a part of my assessment. I have an idea ready which is kind of mediocre. My project is individual and I'm directing. I have developed an idea of threat in a cafe around it. I kind of don't feel strongly about the project. And sadly my school doesn't realize the fact that creative ideas take their own time! As in the role of a director; I had this idea to give some other better ideas a listen. I thought there might a better plot worth filming that what I had conceptualized. SO, Many of you who would like their ideas to be filmed please post your ideas …

How similar are IB Music and AP Music Theory? I am taking IB Music SL currently, and I am wondering if we will cover enough theory to take the AP Music Theory exam. I really signed up for IB Music for the theory, and then I found out it is more about history. So basically, is there enough time in the year to cover both the AP Music Theory and the IB Music syllabi? We have already finished the Baroque and Classical eras, and we still need to do Romanticism, 20th Century, medieval, Renaissance, and something about Dido and Aeneas. Do you think there's enough time? If it would be tough to do, do you think it would be possible if much of the work was done at home?

I have really only started making portfolio pieces in the second half of my second year in IB. Big procrastination, regretted taking the subject. Anyway, I have caught up and produced 7 good quality exhibition pieces. I have another 2 pieces from last year of lesser quality. That makes a total of 9, which I believe is 1 more than the minimum requirement for SLA. But my teacher keeps saying to me to aim for 14 exhibition pieces. First he made it seem like 12 was the minimum, and when I get to 9 he tells me to get 14. Well the November exams are soon and I don't want to be doing art after my 2 week holidays starting in a week. Giving that my teacher said I produced an excel…

He also told us that we're required to do a performance for school like ensemble or band, which is making me suspicious since I have not heard of that yet. o_o;; Help?

Okay so I have some information about the PPP paper if anyone needs it: - There are three sections for HL, two sections for SL - Section One is a "pitch" (proposal in a dynamic/exciting manner) of a maximum of 250 words - Section Two is pretty much a visual where you illustrate (in their words) "the candidate's understanding of the intended process of realization" (so basically visuals that explain what you are trying to accomplish). This section cannot be written up like a formal essay. - HL only: Section Three (1000-1250 words) Comentary on philosophical rationale, sociohistorical influences, cultural influences, etc. on your proposal If you have any questions th…
