Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

So I'm nearly done with the essay (I'm searching for somewhere I can cut down 250 words) and it's time for me to write the abstract... Although we've been give plentiful advice on the actual essay, this part is quite dim to me. I know the word limit is 300 words (and of course I'll go way over that, as usual ), but other than that I don't know much about what exactly it should contain and in how much detail...? Is it just my conclusion all over again, or? Thanks beforehand.

I am having some trouble with the conclusion of my ITGS EE. My question is why cloud computing is/will be important to our future. The issue is that I am not sure what is the correct sentence structure for one of my sentences. Here is what I have: "Cloud computing excels at performing the task which any first rate piece of technology should do — making the lives easier of human beings — by outperforming predecessors while requiring fewer resources than prior methods" My issue is with the clause I have placed between the two dashes. "Making the lives easier of human beings." When I read this aloud it seems unnatural and that makes me want to replace it with something else …

So essentially I have an idea of a topic that I want to write about (why gay people should have the same rights as straight people), but can't seem to find an IB subject that I can fit it in. Any suggestions on which subject it may be in and potential problems if I choose to write on this topic in that subject?

I recently was informed by some on IB survival that my topic wasn't an art paper. I am very confused because not only has my art teacher but my "head of all supervisors" as well has informed to me that my paper best fit into the visual arts category! My TOK teacher, which is my head supervisor of everyone, told use to write out a summery of what we are interested in, and I am having a lot of trouble trying to formulate it into not only a question, but an art question as well. I have found that my previous questions have had my own bias opinions in them. Well let me stop rambling and tell you what I wrote: "I am doing my research on whether the advertisements within the …

Hi there. WHen I was younger I used to read a lot about the French Revolution and the aristocracy of eighteenth-century France, so I'm already quite familiar with/interested in these subjects. Having second thoughts about doing this for my EE now, though. I've thought about the relationship between the nobility and monarchy, the effects of the Enlightenment on the nobles' way of thinking, the debauchery of court life (the last one seeming, for some reason I can't quite figure out, dodgy.) "How did the rise of absolutism in France affect the relationship between the nobility and the monarchy?"..."To what extent did debauchery flourish at court from the reign of Louis XIV u…

I’m writing my extended essay in economics on the impact of undocumented/illegal workers on Flroida’s economy. I read that you have to use primary and secondary research to complete the EE like IB wants. There is plenty of secondary research out there for me, but how am I supposed to do primary research for me topic? The IB booklet I have suggests interviews or surveys, but who am I supposed to interview? No business will admit to hiring undocumented workers to a high school student. I’m dividing my paper into costs and benefits. Here is what I have under each, perhaps that will help. Costs: Health Care Education Incareration Lower wages Benefits Difficulty in measuring …

I need some help with starting my extended essay please! The topic I have chosen to 'study' is: 'The expat child – unique problems vs. unique privileges/opportunities' using a psychological point of view. One of the problems I have with this is that I don't study Psychology as a subject at school as it is not provided, but I am really dedicated to this topic as I am a TCK (third culture kid)/expat. If it is possible that someone can give me some pointers on how to start writing and how to link it into the psychology syllabus, it would be a big help. I do have a printout of the psychology syllabus and have done lots of research into the topic I wish to write about in my e…

Hi, So, the choosing of an extended essay topic and supervisor is about to start at my school. I am either doing mine on BAM or History, but I would prefer History, as I find it more interesting. I live in New Zealand, a very small country, which the IB examiners don't know much about. Should I do my topic on something to do with my country, which would mean spending more time researching, or should I take the easier option of choosing one of the overly done topics for IB History, and save my time, but risk boring the IB examiner? I would like to think that I am alright at History, I get around 13/20 for the essays and 16/20 for sources. I am near/at the top in my class f…

Hello Everyone So, I'm one semester into IB and already the deadline for a EE topic is very much upon me. I'm really passionate about physics and all those "easier" EE subjects really just bore me (not doing history!). I'm considering doing a physics extended essay on 'The relationship between velocity of sound and the density of differing mediums' (e,g Wood, plastic etc etc). I can partially derive and understand the formulas for speed of sound but not 100% sure about how exactly to go about this. I'm thinking that I will have to create a tube at which the sound will go through while having a block in the middle of different mediums but will this just create more variab…

"Are there stereotypes within the media/ has the media successfully portrayed the rising education levels of minorities?" and I'm also debating on if I should research "sexism" within the media as in "does the media show sexism/ is sexism displayed in new forms in comparison to the past?"

Hello, I am currently contemplating on a topic for my Extended Essay. I decided to do my Extended Essay in Computer Science, as this subject is a clear strength of mine. I have a passion for video games, so I plan on doing my EE with a video game related subject. However, I'm somewhat confused as to what to do and what not to do in my EE, and the subject-specific guide is somewhat difficult to follow as well, with no real way to get help to understand it. Hi =) I'm doing my EE in music, and I was looking at a couple of topics for my EE. I was just wondering if anyone has ideas/suggestions on any of my topics and help me decide which is better. So I was thinking either: 1. Comparison between Paganini's La Campanella and Liszt's La Campanella ------> I haven't actually done research on this yet, it's just a topic that I thought of at the "spur of the moment" and I think it's pretty interesting RQ: To what extent did Liszt keep the original characteristics of 'La Campanella' from Paganini's 'La Campanella'? or something along the lines of that 2. Schumann's portrayal of a festival scene through Papillons (Op.2) ------>…

I live in South Florida, so the Loxahatchee River is located very near my house. I want to write an EE on possibly psychology, but at my school psych isn't a class for IBs. I'm taking english HL, econ HL, chemistry HL, biology, french, math, and TOK. i like english and biology, and they are my best subjects so far, but psychology really interests me. I did hear that for bio you have to perform a lab, etc which sounds a little difficult. An english EE sounds like a challenge as well. I need help on something... I'm planning on writing my extended essay on psychology however I'm not taking psychology at school. I've read the Extended Essay booklet which clearly states that I shouldn't be choosing a subject if i don't take it at school. This made me really nervous. Only 2 people at my school took their EE's on psychology last year and the results of the EE's were pretty bad. One got F and the other got D. But the two misunderstood something, gave too much personal information and therefore got that bad. But I still don't know what I should do. My topic is the relationship between unemployment and suicidal behavior. Should I take the risk or should I …

Hello. I'm starting to write my psychology extended essay. My topic is basically about why people conform in the society. I had several questions before I started. Does the essay have to be very very very formal? (i wanted to start my intro with a old tale(which is very commonly known) I looked up some info on the internet, and the suggestions seemed told me to write about why the research question is significant and my game plan for the rest of the essay. Should I just skip the story? Also...Do you guys know any website that is helpful? I am very nervous about how to start this. Please Help thanks

So I'm doing a Computer Science EE and I need some help. I've narrowed my topic down to machine learning, and I've decided to tackle it on the perspective of how fuzzy logic aids in machine learning and artificial neuron networks. Is coding necessary for this type of topic? I have very limited skill in programming: I am only proficient (and have experience) in Java, Turing, and MATLAB. And should I also include implications that machine learning has on recent developments on mobile and computing technology? Some help please? Thank you!

I'm really interested in doing something in US Government, like plans that presidents made or something of the sort. I initially wanted to compare the New Deal with the Great Society in terms of how well they solved poverty problems but my advisor said that's too broad. Then i wanted to focus on the education aspects of the Great Society and the New Deal and compare how effective they were in bettering education or even ultimately reducing poverty. Again, my advisor said that it was too broad. Eventually we settled on looking at how the public perceived one of the education acts of the Great Society. Should I stick to this or is there a way I could somehow work the educat…

First post, eek! Here's my idea: Examine parallelism in HP 1 and HP 7. How specific should the question be? Here's what I have so far: -What is the significance of parallelism in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?- Looking at the example questions in the EE packet, I saw the question “What are the role and the significance of dance in Pride and Prejudice and Emma?” Does that mean 'significance' of a certain aspect is a viable topic in the Language A1 category in general? -How does parallelism contribute to the development of theme and characters in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows…

Hi! I am doing the extended essay in English A2. I am doing it about the famous book Lord of the Flies by William Golding. I am interested in anlyzing the struggle that exists in the island between Civilization and Savagery. But I can't think of any good Hypothesis: The one I'd thought until now was: "Up to what extent the absence of authorities produced the sinking of civilization in the island?" What do you think about that? Is it to narrow? Do you have any better? Thanks Ignacio

Hello it's me again. I am writing to you because I'm really confused. I don't know which topic to choose: 1) How does the support of family and close friends helps in recovery from Anorexia Nervosa? 2) A comparison of different therapeutic interventions in treatment of Anorexia Nervosa. 3) To what extent are females more prone to Anorexia Nevosa? What do you guys think? The worst thing is that I don't know where can I find data. For example how many people recover from Anorexia after family therapy in comparison to group therapy?? Do you know where can I get it from?

Hi, been planning an EE in biology, and everything seemed OK but I have just been told that I cannot use s.aureus because it is a pathogenic bacteria. (This despite the fact that I know EEs from the past have used this specific organism in their experiments, but according to what I heard this is no longer allowed under new rules explicitly stated by IB.) Problem is, large numbers of biology EEs are based on topics which go something like this "investigation on the antibacterial properties of <substance to test> on <bacterial organism>". If the bacterial organism is not even harmful, then what is the point of trying to find new ways to inhibit its growth? S.Aur…

My EE is in Economics. It is pretty much complete (you'd hope it were as it's due tomorrow!!) and I'm just going over small details/criteria/checklists etc. I don't understand how I'm meant to show clear and precise identification of academic context? Is this even applicable to EE in Economics as it was only mentioned in the general section of the EE guide, not in the Economics specific section. What do you think/suggest??? I am planning on writing my EE in English and doing it over Harry Potter. I just finished reading the series and my best choices for topics are the following: 1)Influence of Mythology 2)Symbolism 3)Name Origins 4)Role Reversals 5)Foreshadowing I think I could write an excellent essay with each of those topics, but I am looking for suggestion on a novel to compare it to in each of those topics. I'm planning on finalizaing my EE on Biology till September. I havent still constructed the (official) research question. I am a person involved in athletics and i just came up with this idea because i have read many articles concerning the effect of lactic acid concentration in performance. However, I …

Ok this is my first post, so bear with me if I make any mistakes Anyway I decided to write my EE on the novel, American Gods by Neil Gaiman. The thing is I'm not so sure about the research question. I've basically narrowed down what I'm going to discuss to: -Trust vs Betrayal (leaning towards this one, but not sure if I could write 4000 words on it) -Inter character relationship, specifically the father-son relationship between Wednesday and Shadow -Traditional culture vs homogeneous American, aka the "boiling dry" of the melting pot that is America. -Faith, belief and sacrifice (added sacrifice because it's such an important religious aspect). I've been brainstorming all sorts of EE topics about HP. I think i've come full circle. Would it be too simplistic to do it on " Maturation of theme in HP1 and HP7?" I'm sure I could dig up some really interesting things- but I'm not exactly aruging something. another idea im tossing around is Harry P. and Alice [ from wonderland] and something about how they arbitrarily see the world: they dont neccesarily follow or understand the societal rules, and from their innocent povs, we can easily see the mishaps of the world- harry sees the corruption of the govnt, alice sees the absurdity of all the characters anybody want to put to that to a fancy title? thanks for the help…

Hey guys! I'm trying to phrase the topic and thesis of my EE but I'm completely lost. I'm thinking of comparing the styles of the two authors? What I'm thinking is that both novels are about societies that are oppressive and restrictive (especially on women) but the two books have different messages and the styles used by the authors help show the difference. I think the Handmaid's Tale warns against a government that's too authoritarian but A Thousand Splendid Suns is just telling a story and maybe raising awareness? of what happened in Afghanistan. Am I making sense? Would this work?
