QueenSara
Does anyone know if you HAVE to do a second Tok presentation or if you can skip that one if you are satisfied with the first result. I got 19/20, so I feel great about that and feel like saving some time for other school things during next year, hence not doing another presentation. Is it OK to do so? Is it OK to do so?No you only do have to do one, but it depends on the policy of your school. If you filled out a PPD (Presentation Planning Document) and PMF Self-evaluation (Presentation Marking Form) for the first one then you don't have to do a first one. But if you never filled out those documents then technically it wasn't official, so you'll probably have to do another one.btw. I ****ed up my TOK presentation and everyone expected me to get a perfect score. My advice is not to overprepare or do anything too abstract of sophisticated that the class/teacher won't understand. Definitely choose a topic that is very very controversial that involves ethics, human nature, current events or anything that everybody can relate to and it should definitely involve emotions. I ended up doing Affluenza and how it's destroying human values and happiness, but Affluenza only affects a select few and in a socialist country like Denmark, nobody could relate. So try not to do a topic that is idiosyncratic to culture or class (i.e. can only be understood by that culture or class). Reply
Broxtreme
Haha! My topic is in philosophical mathematics, I am using math to prove that god exists, (kinda weird huh?) I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on how I would format this paper... Reply

IBMan9000
I don't know my grade, but I know it's been graded. So it's safe to say that my topic was on genetic engineering and the ethics involved against the gains in various aspects of society that could result. It was basically defining it for the first part, talking about religion for the second part, the secular issues for the third, and then a lot of scifi type stuff to wrap it all up. Sadly, I had to turn down an in class discussion about doctor who because it would have been too offtopic. Reply
koreANgel
Oooo, I hope you did well on your presentation!I'm doing medical malpractice, and it's not going so well... Any tips? =D Reply
IBMan9000
Maybe you can talk about whether or not:stricter laws should be put in place, more education and screening should be required for doctors, legal consequences for malpractice and if they actually defer it, things like that. The medical field is not really my favorite part of science, but I'm sure you can make it interesting. Maybe even states social statistics about it and argue if a sort of social profiling should be enacted on (that's always a good issue to get class participation in). Bandev
I did mine on Takashi Murakami's art, and I got 20/20. Another that got 20/20 was about the censorship of the ABC (the Australian one). Reply
tvd7
I'm doing my presentation on the Palestine/Israel conflict and how it relates to the ways of knowing. So far I've been able to talk about language, but what else can I talk about? I'm making a power point and can basically put in videos and whatever else I need to sound convincing... QueenSara
I did mine on knowledge problems concerning SECTS/CULTS (19/20, should have been 20/20 if we hadn't put to low predicted grades on ourselves... I hate that that's affecting.. :/ for next presentation I'll go with 5-5-5-5!). Reply

I got 19/20, so I feel great about that and feel like saving some time for other school things during next year, hence not doing another presentation. Is it OK to do so?yeah, there were three girls in our class who got 20/20 in their first year of IB and they dont have to do it again. they're all video taped, right? but the tape cut out half way through their presentation so it had to present it again so it could be re-taped to send away. so they did their presentation twice but it means this year they dont have to do anything! kinda like anticipating a subject i guess. callum
I did my TOK presentation a couple of weeks ago on the teaching of history. What sould we teach? Why? Why not? Who should decide? I used history as an area of knowledge as my focal point. I ended up getting full marks. I was ecstatic afterwards. We've had some really different topics at my school: cannibalism, animal rights, transplant tourism, dance etc. Most have been focused around ethical issues, but a few on other areas of knowledge such as the arts and the human sciences. Mr. Shiver
I actually decided to be really ambitious with my TOK presentation. I talked about a rising new field of genetics called Epigenetics, and the ethical, linguistic, perceptual, and paradigmatic issues that surround it. I got a 19/20, because my teacher told me I didn't talk enough about breast cancer. Edited July 20, 2008 by Mr. Shiver Reply

Mr. Shiver
What's your presentation about?Did a quick Wiki check, and it seems to me like this is a case of an ethically wrong action with relatively harmless intentions. You could talk about the potential limits of freedom of expression, or maybe the responsibility of an artist for his/her audience's reaction. Just some suggestions, though.Remember to structure the presentation based on knowledge issues as they pertain to the four ways of knowing (you don't have to do all four, though). Some ideas, not exhaustive nor prescriptive:Language: In light of the different denotations/connotations of art and child pornography, which set of connotations/denotation does Henson's art seem to align better with? How is art used to communicate with people, and to what extent are artistic mediums forms of language? What are some problems that may arise in the interpretation of artistic communication?Perception: When viewing Henson's art, how is perception affected by personal bias, society's rules, human nature, etc.?Reason: Who's logically at fault and who's justified? The artist Henson, or his viewers? Sourced information could be the basis of propositions. Emotion: What are the emotions derived from the art? Are they intended by the artist or shaped by the viewers? What influences do emotions have when judging the graphic nature of the images?Always remember to consider both sides of the argument where relevant. This thread is also very useful for general advice: http://www.ibsurvival.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2566 Edited August 22, 2008 by HMSChocolate Reply
