Universities outside UK and US

Recommended Posts

As all the IB kids only talk about UK and US for universities and generally have little knowledge on what is outside those two country's.

I am asking people to contribute with universities known for having good ENGLISH based education. Most IB kids focus on either going to

UK/US or their own country, which often has cources in their native language. So I started this topic to invite people to share their knowledge about

universities where you can study in english, both bachelor and master (in many country's there seem to be more master cources in english then bachelor)

So i just start with some universities i know, and the cources.

Prague, Tjeckien - Medicin, they offer medicin for foreign students in english, don't really know much more, they have quit good reputation

Delft, The Netherlands, technical university, well know for their aerospace engineering program

So anyone else who knows some good universities? more want to see what options are out there

I can give a couple of Examples of Jordanian Universities:

JU: Jordanian University, Located in the Capital. It's a public university and has the reputation to be the best in Jordan. It's not known to be specialized in something specifically, but everyone wants to go to it because it's known to be the best. I don't like it. Most of the courses are in English, but you ahve to take some core courses that are in Arabic, of course Foriegners may be exempt of these...

German Jordanian University: a small university that is not known whether it's public or private (lots of people argue for each side, apparently it's in the middle somewhere!) known for it's architecture program to be the best in Jordan. You must take German language at this university, and are able to do a year in Germany in your 4th or 5th year which would enhance your German and you know new experiences and what not.

PSUT: Princess Soumaya instituite of Technology. known for courses like computer science, MIS, IT anything computer related!

JUST: Jordanian University of Science and Technology. Known to be the best Uni for scientific courses. Anything from Med to Engineering. It doesn't have the credit it deserves, because of the general popularity of JU, but I think it's better than JU in Sciencey things.

ok that's about it from me ;) there are loads of more Unis, but these are generally the ones who teach in English

hope this is what you were looking for :)

National University of Singapore is also a good institution for applying. It started to accept IB students from last year, however, the chance of acceptance is still low compared to A-levels students. You may be able to apply for scholarship, which leads to lower the tuition fees around 6000 SGD per year. In return, you will need to work in Singapore or a Singaporean company abroad in 3 years right after you graduate.

Hong Kong University is a nice place to study . The tuition fees are about 15000 USD for this year. It does not ask for a typical grade but only English is listed as the prime requirement. Offers are often replied really late. Though it was ranked 18th in the Word University League Table in 2007, on the contrary, many people think that HKU is overrated as the fact it is even above Stanford University.

Besides, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand universities are quite welcome with application from IB students.

don't bother trying NUS (National University of Sinagpore). I'm from singapore and doing the IB. tough luck for us IB sporeans seeking admissions to any Spore universities. the spore education board prefers spore's ALvls and polytechnic students, compared to IB and SAT. they are very biased and narrow-minded. mm i might get caught and charged by the police if they every see this post. that is how "communist" this country is, even though they claim to be DEMOCRATIC.

anyway, there are countries like Australia, New Zealand... ANU is the top for australia and university of auckland is the top for NZ... i was at this website once, cant remember what its called.. but they said that France and Germany have quite a number a universities that offer degrees taught in english, and that those countries are much cheaper than the US and UK, contrary to what everyone else thinks...

Maybe you are right because once I look at the article about International Baccalaureate and it said that a lot of IB applicants fail to achieve an offer. However, NUS does have a policy to select about 150 Vietnamese students a year and they do hold interviews and admission test. So I really don't mind to give it a try because surely I have an advantage of learning my subjects in English while other Vietnamese students only have a regular high school diplomas.

Interview??? They never interviewed me!!

But yeah, I applied and didn't get in. That maybe because my overall grade wasn't high enough though. I think you're looking at 40+ for Sing uni admission. But meh, their loss, and the only reason I applied was that it was close to home anyway. I didn't really want to spend 3 years living on Singlish (make that 6, since I'd probably have to work for them for 3 years as well)

You dont need to take admission test if you're in IB though. I think the admission tests are stupid anyway, they're on stuff like physics and chem even for business degrees - why on earth would you need phys and chem for business?

Oh just so this post have some semblance of on-topic.

Erasmus University Rotterdam has a pretty good International Business Administration program (can't believe they're still calling it BA though)

The Australian School of Business in UNSW is one of the best in Australia. If you go to UNSW, whatever you do, DON'T do Arts and Social Science.

The SPF (Sing Police) is coming to your HDB in the morning in AMK Central for that comment.

Which school do you go to?

-

Uni of Auckland is good in NZ.

UBC / McGill is good in Canada.

How did you know I'm from Chats? Used to go there anyway, and AC(I) isn't a proper international school. Just adding an international to then end of the name of the school doesn't mean that it is international.

Anyway, I'm not from NZ, but I should be going there by March. University of Auckland is pretty versatile, and nearly all courses are pretty decent. It depends on what you want to do really.

you said so in another thread about pple in spore...

when the school first started, it was filled with sporeans. now in its 4th year running, 50% of the students are international... so that does make us an international school. at least now you get to see blonde heads bobbing about on the soccer field >_<

ok since you're going to NZ, do you think University of Otago is reputable?

To Ss HIEN (HMSChocolate): Honestly, most of 150 students selected were/are in Major High Schools (You're from Hanoi, so there would be Ams, etc.) I know some Ams students and they're nice. But when it comes to Ho Chi Minh City's case, mainly the selected ones are NERDS. I can't really stand the fact that NUS only asks for IELTS 6.0 overall, how can people handle all the lectures and coursework, assignments with that LEVEL of ENGLISH? Furthermore, while the majority of 'EXCELLENT PEOPLE' getting into NUS keeps learning all the textbooks since they were in their Major High Schools to NUS, we need to work on our EE days and nights, complete 150 hrs or more of CAS but the chance is just a peanut. Possibly we should not UNDERRATE ourselves, just because other stuff OVERRATES itself.

How about North Korea, I'm specifically interested in Kim Jong Il School of Economics and Famine...?

I'm sorry global mod, but this thread is about people posting Unis in their countries not asking about certain none existant ones >.< I'm afraid I'm going to have to warn you now for going offtopic!

:D

Ams kids are nerds too >.< Kidding.

But I suppose considering there are only three international schools in Hanoi. 2 are IB schools and the one is a French school. So the French kids would just go to France or something and IB kids are usually more ambitious than Sing. I can say that's probably similar in HCMC too. So statistically they'd get very small number of IB students from VN. You would think that would up our chances but I guess if they don't like IB then it would just decrease the chances. Besides, speaking in terms of grades, those people from schools like Ams and stuff would probably have 8,0 - 9,0 average or around there and that kind of look more impressive in percentage terms than at 35+ at IB.

American University in Paris apparently have a scholarship program for IB students from 31 points up.

I'm actually very interested in Hong Kong university. I sent them e-mails asking about their scholarship programme but they never bothered to reply....

Aquarius, do you know more about HKU? particularly about the scholarship programme?

As for other universities, City University Hong Kong is gradually climbing up the rankings ladder, as of 2007 they were place 149. I talked to the admissions officer personally and it seems a nice place to stay, requirements are 24 points in IB and if you have 36 points out of 42 you get a full scholarship.

Tilburg university in the Netherlands has a good reputation for economics, business and econometrics (very tough course) near the small town of Tilburg, the uni encourages and helps you find a job if you like to earn a little bit as well

Don't go to Sciences Po in Paris - their campus is awful and many of the people there are just weird/boring

HKU is very picky and they will not answer anyone immediately except the VERY OUTSTANDING ones (I HATE THIS). Therefore I don't think they would give the scholarships easily. Why not try calling them directly, if they're not so nice then forget this. Trust me, HKU is not that physically & mentally magnificent as you probably think.

HKCU is nicer in my opinion, and it's considered as a good institution among Asian universities. Just so you know, when it comes to world ranking, it's too wide for small people like us to understand >.<

does anyone know much about universities in South Korea? any reputable ones that have courses taught in english?

Seoul National University does teach in English in its Business Administration and Economics course I think. But they haven't accepted IB yet. On the contrary Korea University accepts IB, but there is only one course offered in English: International Studies, and you need to prove your Korean proficiency just like Japanese universities.

I looked at the site, and even though they give 3000 Euros, the tuition fee is 24000, so it's not that much!

It's not necessary to trust totally what appeared in the website, there would be always hidden ones to give out secretly. Let me reveal this interesting fact about studying pre-university in the United Kingdom. If you're Vietnamese, you usually only need to pay half of your tuition fees while other Asian students have to pay full fees or get very few % of scholarships, no matter they're brilliant or not.
