best way to study eco?

Recommended Posts

Make summary of your text book, the bestt one by far is the ib economics textbook by ellie tragakes, the second edition is better if you're doing HL becaue the first edition doesn't have any maths questions. Then ask someone to quiz you verbally. Give him/her the official syllabus so they can ask you exactly what the IB wants, nothing else. The take past papers and do them. For economics when doing past papers it's important to do all of them under exam conditions because one of the main difficulties of the exam is timing. It's important to get used to the amount of time you have. A lot of people do badly because they expand on unessary topics even if they know their syllabus well.

You should also try to memorize many of the terms on the glossary of a textbook you may have, review diagrams etc. Make sure u focus on Micro and Macro for tomorrow and International and Developmental for after tomorrow.

I personally think that the Tragakes book is really useful, like emmapatregnani said. I used the Economics Course Companion second edition by Jocelyn Blink and Ian Dorton. I feel it explains concepts very well but it took me a long time to review everything and it may be a bit old (2 years). I also had the oxford study guide which is really good as well, from 2012.

The best way to study for IB Economics, or any subject for that matter, is past papers. Past papers prepare you for exactly what you are going to face on the exam: little time, quick writing and thinking. It also prepares you very well to be able to define and explain economic concepts, draw diagrams and logically structure an answer. As I have outlined in several other threads: past papers are the most superior way to go about doing well on the exams:

Past papers, past papers, past papers...and I did I already mention it, past papers. Past papers is your best friend when preparing for any IB-exam. They prepare you for exactly what you have to do on the exam and you find out what content you are lacking knowledge of. I experienced great improvements in my grade from my predicted by practicising Paper 1s and 2s the month before the exam (outlined below; from another thread):

Do past papers or sample paper exercises from your textbook. It will help you tremendously in answering and getting used to examination questions. If you have the opportunity, ask your teacher if it is possible that you could together mark your practice papers and discuss how to improve them weekly. I did this with my teacher and it was of tremendous help - helped me raise my grade from a predicted 4 to a 6 in the final exam!
