Historical Investigation - Is my topic narrow?

*To what extent did the US feel compelled to focus and limit the spread of the Communist Party?*

In general, my research consists of communism in America from the earlier to mid 1900's. The communists being abused, followed, persecuted as they discuss at meetings and fight for their own rights as they seek a world of socialism.

I think this is going to be too broad and you're going to have to pick some point of focus to narrow it down. Perhaps pick a time period (i.e. 1900-1920, etc) or a region of the United States to make your IA narrower in scope. While it's not bad, I think you'll just have too much to focus on and you'll have to cut your analysis short to include all of your information if you leave your topic as it is.

What if I changed it to "To what extent did Communists fight for rights and socialism in California during 1900-1960?" ?

Your new topic sounds much better, but it would probably be better if you changed it to 'In what ways' instead of 'to what extent' because it's obvious from the question that they did fight for rights and socialism as much as they could (just my opinion though).

Also, you want to make sure your question is something you can analyse. So maybe something like 'How effective were Communist fights for rights etc.....' Unless you're really good at analysing and won't fall into the trap of narrating.
