Do Math Standard instead of Studies.

Hi Guys,

I have been doing DP for 2 weeks now and I'm doing Math Studies, but its way to easy.

I'm not good at maths and especially i suck at formula's.

Should i go for Math Standard? Or just go for a good grade in Studies?

It depends what you want to do post-IB. Maths studies is designed for students who won't require Maths for their chosen course, e.g. languages, the arts (music, drama, ...), the humanities, etc.

i want to do International Relations, or something with Economics i think.

If you want to go into economics, I wouldn't recommend math studies. Economics also deals with math, and you wouldn't be very prepared for that in uni if you just did math studies. You'll need at least SL, and some universities require HL math for economics. International relations doesn't need math at all.

Then again, it really depends on where you're applying. Some universities don't look fondly on math studies and will prefer SL math regardless of the course you're applying for, whereas others don't care.

I'm doing Eco HL does that make any difference? or do they also care about math when you do eco hl>? Because Eco HL is more maths. at least in our school.

I'd still take Maths Standard. Depending on the Uni you want to go to they may have different criteria for the Maths Level required and if you really want to go into economics standard is of more use, especially when studies is easy for you.

Thanks for all the advice I will try to enroll in Standard, and when it's to hard i can always drop to Studies.

i would definitely recommend math SL. we had about 5 college presentations at school in the past week, and every one of them require a minimum of a 3-4 in math SL.

all of these are business schools, and have told us that those taking math studies will not be shortlisted.
