givesAten
So, hi. Well, right now I am an IB junior, currently in calc, and next year, I have the choice of taking maths HL, maths SL or maths studies. I was thinking about SL, and I wanted some feedback on what the class was like, the workload, and so on.Thanksc: Reply
GirlwiththeBlueBox
If you're in calculus right now, that's basically the equivalent of Maths SL. Go for SL if you want the easy year, but if you're up for a challenge and are a maths-oriented person, try HL. Reply
Emmi
HL math and SL math both contain a calculus unit. Math studies does not. The unit in HL math is much more extensive than that of SL math, and you learn much more in regards of derivatives and integrals in the HL class.I took SL math over grades 10 and 11 (due to my math track) and took the exam at the end of 11th grade. I took AP Calculus AB in 12th grade because I had to take a math class. Everything covered in SL math is taught in AP Calc, so if you were to take calculus now and take SL math next year, you would already know practically all of the calculus unit in SL math (there are others such as probability, vectors, etc). If you were to take HL math next year, you'd know a good portion of the HL calculus content (not all of it I believe, but you would have a good head start on it).
