For exams you need the answer to be correct to (at least, I guess) 3 significant figures, unless otherwise stated. For IAs I think it depends but the exact answer (fractions) is probably better. Abu Posted October 6, 2010 Report Share Posted October 6, 2010 If it doesn't state in the question, you're meant to give your final answers correct to 3 significant figures. Obviously, where it states exact value, you're better off giving fractions. For IAs, it would be easier to use decimals because using fractions everywhere will muck up your formatting but it depends on the situation so decide as you see fit.
