I think that there are differences in HL and SL papers, but maybe not so big difference

like you might need to read more books in HL and there are more stuffs that you need to analyse in HL

and maybe when they ask you to write (if they do so), for SL they may give you hints or some kind of guide which helps you like what you should write. I mean, they give questions to lead us. but in HL, no no no.. no hint at all, so you need to start by yourself and go thru the content by yourself

I think that's roughly the diff.. but I dunno. asking the English A2 teacher in your school would help you best.

and I'd suggest that you take SL because I think that it is not so useful taking A1 or A2 HL unless you are the linguistic type person or something like that

A2 SL :

is for a fluent language user who may not intend continuing study

of the language beyond the Diploma Programme, and who:

• is a native or near-native speaker wishing to study a different

language as his or her language A1

• is an almost bilingual student (in reading or writing or both)

• lives in a country where the target language is spoken

• is taught other subjects in the target language.

whereas

A2 HL:

is for a fluent language user who intends to study the language at

this level for a future career or to meet a Diploma Programme

requirement, and who:

• is a native or near-native speaker wishing to study a different

language as his or her language A1

• is a bilingual student (in reading or writing or both)

• lives in a country where the target language is spoken

• is taught other subjects in the target language.

In terms of examinations:

A2 HL:

P1: Commentary on one pair of unseen texts. (You get 2 pairs, you choose one) [2 hours]

P2: TEN essay questions in different themes you did in class, you answer one. [2 hours]

A2 SL:

P1: Commentary on one pair of unseen texts, with guiding questions (maximum of 4). [1.5 hours]

P2: Same as A2 SL. [1.5 hours]
