Group work in IB Psych.

  1. 1. Is there a lot of group work or socializing in HL Psych?

    • Yep, IB Psychology courses are filled with group work.
    • IB Psych has just as much socializing as any regular course.
    • Nope, not at all! IB Psych requires less socializing than math!

I'm a grade 10 myp student in Ontario Canada and I had to take two HL courses for next year, so I took Psych as one of them. However I'm afraid now that I made the wrong decision cause I'd hate it if Psych required too much socializing! OK, let my describe myself. I'm that loner who often sits all alone in class, spends most lunches in the library studying alone, and I absolutely hate group work! Cause usually when there's a group activity I need to go to some random group of people and ask them if I can be in their group, or worse go to a teacher and tell them that I couldn't find a group! Oh God I absolutely hate group work. I'm asking this because I've been reading Psych forums and many describe it as fun and easy, and I know that fun and easy = lots of socializing and little work, for most people. Omg. So am I doomed? Or is Psych an independent course?

Although no one knows how a course at your school is going to be run unless we attend that school (highly unlikely) it will likely have times where you work in a group. In addition you will have to design and conduct a psych experiment, which is going to involve people.

So no you're not going to avoid group work.

The only 'socialising' I've had to do apart of the course is designing a practice IA. The majority of the time you're just trying to get all the content down because it is kinda a lot to remember. For me its pretty much like any other science/humanities classroom. I know that there a elements of the course that focuses on the sociocultural level of analysis which might require first hand experience (teacher might ask for this). I've spoken to ex-IB students and they told me it depends on the teacher. Sorry if this isn't helpful... Good luck!

I don't like group work either, but 80% of my Psychology lessons are all about it. IB requires you to interact with classmates in almost every subject, so instead of avoiding it, start small, and work your way to being better at it. It's easy to just sit by yourself, but honestly, the people who interact and do group work get much better results.

Don't go to the teacher saying you couldn't find a group. IB classes are generally small, so it will be super weird. Just go to a group, be friendly and say 'hi, can I work with you guys?' and sit down. They won't send you away unless you're rude or a known slacker.

OK, so at least I get to ready myself for the group work thanks to you guys. It'll be a bit awkward having to ask to join others groups every single time but the good thing is I've stopped caring what my classmates think about me. And I agree with you ibprincess, I will eventually have to learn how to socialize. Though my career isn't really one that'll involve much socializing, but anyways.
