Hey guys,

I'm currently doing history HL, Route 2

For paper 2 we are studying Topic 1 (Causes, practices and effects of wars)

and Topic 5 (The Cold War).

What are the main topics you MUST know for the exam because the syllabus is really

big and there are soo many wars to be studied, do all of them have to studied ? or only a few ?

Hey there!

What you've gone through in class is usually a good indicator of what to study for. You should have gone through the world wards and some civil wars (the Chinese and the Spanish, for instance) for topic 1. In addition, you should study wars from two different regions (as certain questions ask you to compare two wars from different regions). The questions tend to focus on causes and consequences, but you should be ready to answer questions dealing with the development of technology as well.

We didn't study that much for topic 5 in my class, but typical questions about the cold war deal with the Soviet-American relations, the rebuilding of Europe, social/economic changes, Stalin, Khrushchev, Mao, etc..

I recommend you to search for past papers on Google (or ask your teacher to give you some), as that will give you a very good impression of what the typical questions look like. Try to find the more recent ones, as IBO changed some of the topics with the current syllabus (the first examinations were in 2010).

How bout paper 3, we are doing Option 5 (Aspects of the history of Europe and the middle East)

The three sections choosen were:

6- European diplomacy and the First World War 1870-1923

The information is the same, just revise like whatever your teacher has been teaching you in class and you should be set. One thing you can do is look at past papers (your IB coordinator will have access to these and you can ask for them) for your Paper 3 option and see the pattern of questions. That way you can be assured of which three/four topics/areas have the highest likelihood of turning up and can like prepare accordingly.
