Art Candidate Statement

Recommended Posts

I remember doing my candidate statement. I don't have mine anymore as I've deleted the file off my computer, but I'll list the things I included in it.

- My theme

- What led me to pick that theme (experiences, interests, things like that)

- Some of the techniques I explored

- How I constructed some of my pieces

- Inspirational artists/artists that I studied and whose techniques I borrowed for my art

- New experiences and things I learned during the course

- Any difficulties I had to overcome in making my art

I also believe I had a very short, like a one or two sentence introduction and conclusion, in my candidate statement. It's a lot to include in a short amount of words, so be brief and concise and get straight to the point! My visual arts teacher showed me a few examples of candidate statements from students that had scored 5's, 6's, or 7's and they all centered around that structure. Not neccessarily in that order, however. Just pick a format that works for you and hit all the major points.

Good luck :)

We were advised to certainly include the following words:

  • Purpose&Context&Focus
  • Sources&Influences
  • Process&Achievements
  • Skills
  • Media&Technique
  • Scale
  • Concerns

Try to think of something to say for all the areas and you could separate them into different paragraphs.
