timmotytimmoty
Is there any medical schools in US or Canada with IB recognition policy? Do I have to take SAT if there is the recognition policy? Is there any admission tests I have to take before applying to the Universities for medicine? adletaY
Okay, for the US, it gets a bit complicated. So, in order to apply to medical school in the US, you need two things:1. A bachelor's degree (4 years in the US) in which you have taken the following: A year of Freshman Chemistry along with the appropriate laboratory courses A year of Organic Chemistry along with laboratory courses A year of Biology along with laboratory courses A year of Physics along with laboratory courses A year of English A year of Calculus or other advanced math classes, including StatisticsSo, you can major in anything, as long as you take the classes listed above.Medical school admissions are based heavily on your GPA (Grade Point Average), so getting the top marks in ALL university classes is a necessity.2. Sit the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT)This is a five-hour (maybe six) long exam sat all at once. It is split into three sections. Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Verbal Reasoning. There is also an essay. Scores are out of 45, the national average being 24. (Like IB much?)Medical school admission will be heavily based on GPA and MCAT scores, with extra curricular activities being very important as well. Also, if you are offered an interview, your admission will pretty much be based off of that since the school has already evaluated the other elements of your profile as good enough. As far as IB is concerned, it can place you out of classes in your undergraduate school but not in medical schools. In fact, some medical schools DO NOT accept IB credit in place of university credit for courses. A list of SOME of these schools can be found here:http://www.colorado.edu/aac/noapib.htmI hope this gives you a better picture of US medical admissions! 2 Reply
