uppsala
What is the purpose of the history lesson in the beginning of the novel? And when and why is nature personified?? Reply
Daedalus
History lesson? From what I remember, the narratorial frame sets up a series of correspondences between England two thousand years or so ago and Congo at the time of the novel's writing - basically, to me, suggesting that we develop our way out of this darkness. In a way the into the 'heart of darkness' is also a journey into the deep, dark reaches of man's primal past...Haven't read it in two years or so though, so take this with a grain of salt. 1 Reply
kinguncaged1
I think Conrad refers to Rome's imperial rule over England to imply that imperialism is a part of human nature! Reply
