decemberflower
Hey,I'm revising the Settlement option and I don't really understand the difference between the global pattern of urbanisation and the global pattern of urban growth.I found this presentation, which is helpful in general, but confused me more concerning this question.http://www.slideshare.net/year12blanchgeography/urbanisation-and-suburbanisation?from=ss_embedIt says: "Globally, rapid urbanisation ahs occurred in the past 50 years. Around 50% of the worlds population now live in towns and cities. Most urbanised continents: EuropeNorth America South America Oceania Least urbanised continents: Africa Asia However, in terms of urban growth, the number of urban dwellers is by the far the largest in Asia, with 1.4 billion people living in towns and cities = 40%. "Now why is urban growth the greatest in Asia? In terms of absolute figures because there is the greatest number of people? But then what do the 40% mean??Just wondering, because the syllabus explicitly states "Define urbanization and urban growth, and describe and explain the global patterns of both"...Thanks for your help!BTW, here are some helpful pages I found:http://www.geographyjim.org/course/view.php?id=8http://cac-ib-geography.wikispaces.com/Settlementhttp://liversidgeib.wikispaces.com/3.8.1+%26+3.8.2+Settlement Reply
