Thanks for the help. Edited March 16, 2016 by TheUltimate9 To clarify more Reply
Blackcurrant
Is following a formula/format/5-paragraph essay or whatever the highway to a "7" ...or in any way a guarantee for a grade? Is this what all our efforts (whatever they are) boil down to in the end? Well, the most obvious answer to the question is ... "no". Depth or thought, knowledge, research, persistence and intelligence are what are needed if you are aiming for a high grade. Not formulas Rely on your effort, intelligence and research. Think hard. Learn hard. Use judgment. Edited March 18, 2016 by Blackcurrant 1 Reply

Anyway thanks for the help and advice. Reply
azara
This is a very formulaic method of writing an essay which isn't necessarily going to correspond to an IB English essay or commentary. However, it's a good general structure to have to fall back on, especially if it's your first written commentary. Instead of planning out our essays sentence by sentence (because not every one of those paragraphs will be relevant to every text), our teachers have told us about a pretty common method of analysis. They are SPECS and SLIMS, which looks really dumb but a lot of people find it helpful if they're stuck. Here's an explanation: http://nicholasybwong.weebly.com/uploads/4/4/6/7/4467420/spec1.doc Reply
