I haven't read the books, but as a student who did the IOP this year, I can offer general advice.
As with everything else in IB, to maximize your marks, you should read the criteria set out by IBO, which can be found here:
https://ibpublishing.ibo.org/live-exist/rest/app/pub.xql?doc=d_1_a1lan_gui_1102_1a_e∂=3&chapter=6

Don't get the IOP confused with the Individual Oral Commentary (IOC), they are completely separate.
As you can see in the document I linked, there are three equally weighted criteria: knowledge and understanding; presentation; and language.
So even if your actual content doesn't turn out well, you can still get up to 20 of the 30 possible marks from an engaging presentation and good language use.

IOPs are usually either creative or analytical, so depending on which type you think would work best for you, you should pick one of these approaches.
Creative IOPS would be those along the lines of: extending the story; writing part of the story from the point of view from a minor character.
Examples of analytical IOPS are: analysing a certain technique within a work; comparing and contrasting two works in respect to a particular element.

If you're taking the analytical approach, find something - a theme, a symbol, etc. - that you think you can discuss and analyse at length. Once you've found something you want to do your topic on, go through your work, or works, and take note of all the instances of it that you can discuss. Then you should - with a plan first - write a transcript and design some form of presentation, using PowerPoint, or Prezi, or something of the like. Keep text on PowerPoint/Prezi presentations to a minimum as it makes the presentation boring and a picture speaks a thousand words.

Don't forget to practice it heaps once you're finished!

Here's the markscheme:
