Hi!

Do you mean Written Assignment (WA) by saying "Written task"? If yes, here we go...

So, the nature of WA varies depending whether you are taking SL or HL. The SL WA is to be a piece of 'intertextual writing' based on three texts, related to one of the Core topics; while the HL WA is to be a piece of 'creative writing' based on one of the books studied in the class.

SL:

You write a task basing on 3-4 texts.

  • Each student draws ideas from the 3-4 texts, develops an argument/interpretation, and expresses this in one of the text types specified for Paper 2. So, for example, if you read a text about racism and discrimination, you can write a diary of a person who was a target of serious bigotry and try to convey a particular message/idea with it (e.g. that discrimination is fundamentally evil)
  • WA consists of 2 parts. The first one is a rationale (150-200 words) including the subject investigated, brief description of each of the resources used, the students' intended aims, explanation of how you will be achieving these aims (audience, text type, style, register and etc). The second one is the task itself (300-400 words) which you have to write accordingly with the text types used in Paper 2. In this part you should address the subject presented in the rationale, organize the information from the sources in a manner appropriate to the task, use appropriate language basing on your text type. And the most important thing to remember is that you have to actually link your work to the 3-4 texts you read and solely use information from them.
  • Please note that for Mandarin word limit might be different, so you will have to check it with your teacher.

HL:

You write task basing on one or two of the literary books you have studied in class.

  • It involves a creative piece of writing (500-600) on the book or two books you have read and a rationale (150-250).
  • In the rationale you have to make a brief introduction to a literary text, explanation how your task is linked to a text, your intended aims, explanation of how you will be achieving these aims (audience, text type, style, register and etc).
  • A creative piece of writing could be an alternative ending to a book, a diary entry of one of the characters, interview with one of the characters, a newspaper article talking about a particular event happened in the book (for example, murder) and many more.
  • As an example, take the novel "Of Mice and Men". For WA you might write Curley's wife's diary entry which could have been discovered after she had been killed.
