KIN
what physical characteristics make tundra landscapes extreme? Reply
Nicanniko
Presence of permafrost through the year and limited vegetation - 'Roots can’t penetrate the frozen soil, so only moss, lichen, and low shrubs can grow there' (http://icestories.exploratorium.edu/dispatches/big-ideas/tundra-and-permafrost/), short growing season, presence of marshes in the summer (due to thawing ground). These conditions hinder human settlements in such areas. Edited March 23, 2014 by Nicanniko Reply
