Canadian Study Medicine in Italy

I do not know a lot about the Italian system, but I am interested in studying medicine straight out of high school. I do not speak Italian, but I know that the International Medical Schools (Milan, P...) offer their courses in English. I want the option to attend school in Italy.

Can an international student attend medical school in Italy straight out of high school? Could attend the International Medical School? And how do I coordinate that with my regular Canadian applications which are due between October and January annually, and school starts in September?

(I am currently in Pre-IB, grade 10).

I am also interested in applying to schools in Australia for medical school. Also, within Canada, but an undergraduate in something before medical school.

Go to Cuba! Its closer and cheaper... problem is just getting out.
But in all seriousness, maybe take a look at Austria, compared to schooling in Canada its much less costly and well its just as good. The difference is that the government subsidizes higher education there. You will pay more than an EU citizen, but none the less its a good price. and Vienna is beautiful :D Welcome to their university campus ! University_of_Vienna_by_mech7.jpg

In terms of universities in Australia, just so you know that medicine is extremely competitive and difficult to get into first year. However, I'm not sure if it is as challenging for an international student. I recommend looking at the university you want to go to and see the international requirements :)

This is the NSW atar equivalent - click here! if you can't find the actual IB mark and if you want to study in a different state, you are able to find the conversions online :)

You should just bear in mind that you will obviously at some point have to see patients on a medical course and in a non-english speaking country, your patients probably will expect to speak to you in Italian/Austrian/their own language regardless of what language your course is conducted in.

I'm not exactly sure of the system there, whether or not you can go right to med school. However I know its a lot different in europe with people picking their careers basically in grade 9 by going to specialized schools for be it engineering, medicine, etc. So yes they might be able to jump right into med school, but you might have some catching up to do as they never sat in a geography or phys. ed class because they took all their no none sense classes that let them get ahead in the required materials

I know I risk sounding slightly stupid, but make sure you don't confuse Austria (a country within Europe; English not an official language) with Australia (in the Asia-Pacific; English is spoken widely). Otherwise, I don't know much about medical school, sorry!

Edit: Actually, I do know some stuff about medical degrees in Australia, by some weird process of osmosis. Obviously, English is spoken and that is the language of training.

In Australia, you can choose between doing an undergraduate medical degree (you start right after school and typically study 7 years of medicine in a dual degree) versus a postgraduate medical degree (do a normal 3-year degree and do a 4-year postgraduate medical degree). This depends on the university you want to enter as to which option happens.

There are arguments on either sides for whether you should do UG (e.g. UNSW) or PG (e.g. USyd) medicine. In Australia however, the wonderful thing is that you don't need to take any pre-requisite subjects. There is assumed knowledge, but that can be covered by bridging courses. So, if you're doing IB Biology and Chemistry, you are already ahead of some applicants in terms of their medical knowledge prior to entering a course.

In terms of application requirements, it is quite complex, as you would expect. Most will demand an interview and what is known as an Undergraduate Medical Admissions Test (UMAT), and these three elements are used in conjunction with your ATAR (derived from an IB mark out of 45) in candidate selection. However, there are several universities which will offer medical places if you reach a high-enough ATAR (usually 99.95, which is an IB 45!), and with few other conditions.

Can't compete with Vienna in terms of architecture or history, but the weather is nice in Australia. :)

I don't know quite how it works in other countries, but in the UK PE lessons and taking a broad range of subjects (usually around 10 different subjects) up to the age of 16 is the norm, there's no specialised engineering/medicine school or anything like that. There are schools which specialise in arts and languages but generally it's just that they have very good facilities and more opportunities to do those subjects, it's not that you focus in just on them. It's still required to do a broad range. So I wouldn't worry too much about people being ahead re: medical school, it's not like you're taught anything different here or any extra. IB level Biology and Chemistry is as much as anybody else will know so there shouldn't be any need to catch up.

The system in the US (and I think Canada, I'm not 100%) is to do an related or unrelated degree for 3 or 4 years prior to being able to apply to Medical School, then you go through medical school for a further however many years. In the UK and many other European countries you go 'straight' into medical school but they teach you from IB level-up. So it's a 5 or 6 year course to go from nothing to doctors, is the general idea :P You don't have to spend time doing an extra degree beforehand unless you want to.
