blenderer
Well, "to what extent" -questions are usually really easy to deal with as you first discuss the importance of the thing that is mentioned in the question and then discuss all the other main things that had an effect. For example, if the question was "To what extent did the weaknesses of Stalin's opponents cause his rise to power?" you first explain and analyze the weaknesses of the opponents and state that yes, it did have an impact but then argue that there were also other factors like Stalin's ideology, Stalin's personal skills, etc. that also had an effect and go through these one by one. 1 Reply
funny10sport
how does one challenge the question when it is a "to what extent" question? ThanksJust to add to what Blenderer said, "To What Extent" Questions want you to consider the efficency of an argument or a concept. And just up to what point is it considered viable. For some questions, you should examine the importance of short and long term factors which lead to that conclusion. Here's an example of a "To What Extent" Question: "To what extent was the Spanish Civil War caused by divisions in Spain and in Spanish society?" (Nov. 2005)You could answer this question by explaning 3 main divisions: Political (Left Wing VS Right Wing)Social (Poor peasants VS Rich aristocracy)Religious (Anticlerical socialists VS. Rich Catholic Church)Regional divisions ( Basques VS. Catalans) You could also add how in 1931 - 1936, biterness was emphasized by the changing government. And how finally in 1936, war broke out when the Nationalist military revolted against the Popuar Front.Just remmember, when you write your answer, the opinions and conclusion have to be presented clearly taking in adequate proof and solid arguments. What could help you is to plug in a historiography which would support your argument. Either way, you should provide a fully analytical and relevant answer with lots of detail to get full marks. Hope this helped a bit! Edited August 28, 2012 by funny10sport 1 Reply
