Bee =3
a typical discussion that might arise, but i'd like to know your views on it: WHAT IS THINKING? DO ANIMALS THINK? DO BABIES THINK? and most importantly, how do you justify your thought? haha Reply
~Lc~
this is too mainstream philosophy, not very tokish. What's the point of it? lol if you were going to link it to how we gain knowledge from thinking and reasoning then fair enough... but what's your point? balloon
If you are really interested in thinking you could explore a more narrow topic like: - What is it that makes this group of people think this way about that current affair and that group of people take an opposite view? Is their thinking influenced by A, B and C? The issue could be 'how do we know that our thinking is influenced by A, B and C?' Where A could be culture, B could be religion and C could be experience (I personally prefer prejudice as affecting our thoughts because it is so controversial!) - If you are interested in the way animals think, you could look at a current affair of animal mistreatment, ask why humans believe they are superior to animals, expatiate that it could be because they believe they have a higher order of consciousness and thinking. You can then ask 'how do we know that human thought is 'superior' to animal thought' and you could explore from there about animal thought (of course you would then focus on animal thought, because you can assume that most people have a fair idea of how humans think). FUN! - For the babies topic, why not explore topics that involve controversy about the mental development of babies? This includes abortion, where come people believe zygote = baby and others believe that when the baby is born it is a 'baby'. You could, perhaps, argue that it is the ability to think that should distinguish between mere tissues and complex life. There are massive implications to this line of reasoning, so explore them too! You can then ask 'How do we know that babies think?' You will probably come to an impasse, about the fact that babies do think, but not at an adult's level of sophistication, or you may say that babies think more, because in the first 3 years of life they learn more that they will for the rest of their life. Does thinking require conscious choice of knowledge rather than mere absorption? Oh! The possibilities! Reply
