Hello,

I am going to study IB next year,so I wanna be nuclear engineer and I am definitely taking HL Physics, but I don’t know should I take HL math or it is ok to take SL.I am not sure for taking HL math, because I think I will not be able to do it and also for nuclear engineering should I take chemistry as HL or it is ok as SL?

I think it's a good idea to check the universities you're interested in to see if they require HL math/chemistry for nuclear engineering. You can always sign up for math HL to gauge its difficulty, and take 4 HLs. If math HL isn't your liking, you can just drop it, and if you do end up keeping it, then you can drop one of your other HLs? Good luck with your course selection! I'm also starting the IB next year. :D

Hey! I want to study engineering too so I do HL physics, chem and maths. In my knowledge, most unis ask for physics and maths HL, some may ask for chem HL as well. But it totally depends on where you want to apply - check their website. I know a few seniors studying engineering at college and they say that they use maths all the time. If you find it hard, get practicing, because you will be using it a whole lot studying engineering. doing HL maths is the best way to show unis that you are capable of doing maths and will be able to do it well in engineering.

Another thing is many places offer only 'engineering' and where you do general in the first 2 years and specialise in nuclear, or chemical or mechanical in year 3. So don't get bogged down by the type, you can do chemical engineering even if you did not study chemistry at ib.

Only take those three if you're sure that you want to do engineering. I currently enrolled in those 3 subjects. I can say for a fact that Maths HL is a huge challenge and depending on your understanding, Physics and Chemistry are too. Chemistry in the first year is however doable with a couple of hours of practice every week. Physics would require a bit more and Maths the most. I am taking Maths HL online and it has been a nightmare for me but I've passed it (thankfully). The second year is where the challenge begins and if you find yourself not being able to keep up (with the workload) then its best to drop one.

On the bright side, Chemistry and Physics have quite a bit in common and their topics do intersect at points in the chapters so its handy to be able to understand both from different points of views. Maths definitely has more impact on Physics than Chemistry. But don't take my advice and if you are really ambitious and believe in yourself then do it.
