I am not very experienced,but what I can tell you about studying for geography through what I learnt is that it is very important to get the basics right, and for this paying attention in class, writing notes and being attentive is very useful. Giving you a geographical example (about river processes) - without knowing that deposition occurs on the inner bends of meanders, and erosion on the outer bends of meanders, it will be difficult for one to justify the formation of ox-bow lakes.
