Requirements for Chem IA

I wanted to ask if comparitive study is acceptable for chemistry, where there is no dependent-independent relation and where a property or phenomenon is compared in different brands for example

This is taken from the May 2015 subject report about the new IA: 

 

'A good research question will probably try to determine a trend or relationship. Students should avoid simple comparative analysis of supermarket brands or other systems with a non-chemistry relevant independent variable.'
