Best way to arrange IOC

Hi,

What is the best way to arrange comments during IOC (English Literature HL)?

I am comfortable with going line by line and talk about it.  But, my friends say it is better to pick few important items (major symbols, sound effects, theme etc) from the poem and talk about it as it will allow to include really good and important things into 8 minutes.

What is your experience?  Which method allows to make better marks?

I did my IOC last year, and we had a practice one before we did our final. The practice one was carried out as if it was the real thing, however, we got a mark and feedback based on it (and obviously wasn't sent off). The teacher that was assessing my practice IOC was that type of teacher who really wanted you to do things in their way. So although the poem was much better suited to be analysed line by line (I discussed this in class with my English teacher, who is a different person to the IOC marker), she didn't like that structure, and I ended up getting 2/5 for the organisation criteria.

I ended up getting her again for my final, so that time I structured it by picking out the main points. My advice for you would be to ask your teachers, because in the end, they'll be marking it and then they'll be sent off for moderation. If they seem to be fine with any structure, go with what you feel is best. Like I said before, the poem I received for the practice IOC was quite suited to the line by line structure. It'll differ for all poems so just go with what you think.

Can't agree more with jason_lee121 up there.  Make sure you ask your teacher that is marking your IOC because ultimately they're the ones giving you the mark.

Take their advice in what they say and also look at main things such major symbols and obvious literary features that are easy to pick up on to support all your points :)

Best of luck x
