prochoroffv
Hello, I am studying for my unit 4 exam on chemical bonding however when I am doing practice questions, for example: ii) Identify the number of sigma and pi bonds present in trans-but-2-ene-1,4-dioic acid. How do I find the formula for this compound, it is not in my data booklet. Where would I find the formula to this compound if it is not given in the problem or in the data booklet? This is from the Pearson HL Chemistry Textbook Review Questions. Thank You! Reply
Msj Chem
The condensed structural formula is HOOCCH=CHCOOH.It has two carboxyl groups (at either end) and a carbon to carbon double bond (in the middle). It has one C=C bond and 2 C=O bonds (a total of 3 pi bonds). Therefore it has 3 pi bonds and 11 sigma bonds.
