Do major and minor have to be related?

I'm a 12th grader in high school. I've done some research on universities. As I know, I have to take one major and minor.

I want to learn economics or languages as my major. For minor, I want to learn something I'm interested in and unrelated to my major Eg. Arts, music.

I'm not sure if it's alright for universities. Do my major and minor have to be related? Thanks!

While a major is (obviously) required, you actually aren't required to have a minor in most cases, at least in the US. They don't have to be related, but oftentimes complementary minors can make you more valuable to employers and graduate/professional schools. I myself am doing a chemical engineering major with a math minor, but I used to be doing a Spanish language minor.

Here are some examples of people I know doing a major and minor, both related and unrelated:

Chemical engineering with business

Chemical engineering with German

Chemical engineering with dance

Biology with chemistry and criminology

History/Political Science with Spanish

Mathematics with computer science

Accounting with human resource management

Finance with mathematics

English with business

English with music

International studies with Chinese

etc
